Trelawn I got Elizabeth is Missing and Fatty O'Leary's Dinner Party from my Secret Santa. Paul bought me The Secret Diary of Hendrik Grown and How to Find Love in a Bookshop. My future mother in law got me The Hare with Amber Eyes. So a good haul :-)

Hey all. I got This Savage Song by V. E. Schwab, What Alice Knew by T. A. Cotterell and Dark Rosaleen by Michael Nicholson from family. My GRI SS got me The Bees by Laline Paull which I read a while ago and fell in love with and All you Need is Kill by Hiroshi Sakurazaka. Delighted altogether.

Bookworm with Kids Trelawn, I will be very interested to hear how you find The Hare With Amber Eyes. I thought that the premise of the book was excellent and a lot of it was very interesting, but...I found it heavy going and I just wanted to slap quite a few people in it!

message 2507: by Trelawn (new)

Trelawn I'll let you know when I get round to it.

Might have to treat myself to darker shade of magic seeing as I got one of that authors other books for Christmas...sure seems only fair as it would be lonely otherwise!

I've had the hare with the amber eyes for a couple of years at least now if I remember correctly, not sure why I've never gotten around to it. Will bump it up for early 2017 reading.

I'm looking forward to Prince Lestat. Anne Rice is one of me favourite author although she can be a bit hit and miss.

message 2513: by Paul (new)

Paul I enjoyed the last Vampire Chronicle so I'll pick the new one up at some point. Shes had a few stinkers over her career but I've enjoyed nearly all of the books that centre on Lestat

message 2514: by Margo (new)

Margo I still haven't read the last one. I stopped reading after Merrik I just can't stop buying them lol

message 2515: by Paul (new)

Paul Merrick was absolute crap. Definitely a low point

message 2516: by Margo (new)

Margo Yep - completely put me off. I'm planning to get back to it this year tho.

I really love Backman and found this one endearing. And, you know, I love McCall Smith. You have some happy reading ahead of you.

Trelawn, I can't find The two and a Half Pillars. What series is it?

message 2519: by Trelawn (new)

Trelawn It is the complete set of the Portuguese Irregular verb series, books 1-3. I haven't read any of them but when I saw the entire set for €3.99 I couldn't resist.

message 2520: by Susan (new)

Susan | 4707 comments I don't blame you. It sounds like an amazing deal.

To tell you the truth I haven't read the whole series yet....I loved the first few novels but then never got back into it for some reason. I loved Lestat he's my favorite :)

message 2522: by Margo (new)

Margo Kara I don't think it's the kind of series you to read in order - it's one you dip and out of ;-)

message 2529: by Bookworm with Kids (new)

Bookworm with Kids OK, even though I have an enormous TBR pile, I went a bit mad in the Kindle 12 days of Christmas sale. I am posting from my phone so I can only write the names, I can't add links. I got: The Fire Child by S.K. Tremayne, Red Ribbons by Louise Phillips, The Essex Serpent by Sarah Somebody, Everyone Brave is Forgiven by Chris Cleave, Beatlebone by Kevin Barry and American Gods by Neil Gaiman. No more buying until I reduce my TBR!

message 2530: by Paul (new)

is one of my favorite books. I learned so much about salt mining. I love all his books but this and Sarum: The Novel of England are my favorites. Have you read him before?

I'm looking forward to listening to Hex. I don't usually enjoy translations but that one was recommended to me. Like you I'm not sure I'll hold out til the challenge!

Very interested in what everyone thinks of Hex - I read it towards the end of last year and gave it 3 stars.

message 2538: by Patrick (new)

Patrick There are many little local used bookshops in Queretaro's Centro Historico that have a shelf or two of books in English, and I regularly scout them. On Monday I picked up four paperbacks:

The Essential James Joyce, ed. Harry Levin (Penguin)
Len Deighton, The Ipcress File
F. Scott Fitzgerald, The Pat Hobby Stories
Mark Kurlansky, 1968: The Year that Rocked the World

Grand total spent: 120 pesos ($6.00).

I also noted a number of other titles for future purchase. I try not to buy everything I see the same day (partly because I can't afford to).

Some of the scenes were just a bit intense for me, they crossed the line into distasteful. I didn't blink during King's Gerald's Game but this book..I don't know. The story is wonderful though, those 3 stars were purely for the imagination behind it.

One interesting fact - the author changed the ending completely in the English language version - he said the original ending wouldn't work for countries like the USA. I've been searching for someone who's read the original who can tell me that ending - perhaps I wouldn't have been so unsatisfied with the novel if it kept its intended ending...

I would be interested in the original ending too.

Maria Hill AKA MH Books (mariahilldublin) | 601 comments My 1938 (though I think it is actually a 1928) copy of The Irish RM and other experiences just arrived. The stories are reprints from:
Some Experiences of an Irish RM, Further Experiences of an Irish RM and In Mr Knox's Country. I am not sure that it includes all of the stories of the three books as its 603 pages?

Maria Hill AKA MH Books (mariahilldublin) | 601 comments Can't stop myself buying books! Some bargains picked up today in Bookstation are: Ink (Skin Books, #1) by Alice Broadway (it is has such a pretty cover for a paperback), The Trouble with Goats and Sheep - SAMPLE by Joanna Cannon (because I hear too many good reviews), and as part of two for a fiver White Teeth by Zadie Smith and Long Time, No See by Dermot Healy .

I need help now!

Nice comfort reads Trelawn. I'm not getting much reading done at the moment though I'm working my way through 2 great books, The Book of Lost Things and A Closed and Common Orbit.

I'm spending a lot of time brushing up on my french in preparation for a trip to Nantes to see my son on his 21st birthday!

message 2549: by Trelawn (new)

Trelawn That sounds fab Margo. When is the trip?

message 2550: by Paul (new)
