Hey all. I got This Savage Song by V. E. Schwab, What Alice Knew by T. A. Cotterell and Dark Rosaleen by Michael Nicholson from family. My GRI SS got me The Bees by Laline Paull which I read a while ago and fell in love with and All you Need is Kill by Hiroshi Sakurazaka. Delighted altogether.

Trelawn, I will be very interested to hear how you find The Hare With Amber Eyes. I thought that the premise of the book was excellent and a lot of it was very interesting, but...I found it heavy going and I just wanted to slap quite a few people in it!

Might have to treat myself to darker shade of magic seeing as I got one of that authors other books for Christmas...sure seems only fair as it would be lonely otherwise!

I've had the hare with the amber eyes for a couple of years at least now if I remember correctly, not sure why I've never gotten around to it. Will bump it up for early 2017 reading.

During Christmas I got five books. Hidden Bodies My older sister got me
My Mom (colleen) got me
The House Between Tides
Lyrebird
The Couple Next Door
Prince Lestat and the Realms of Atlantis
So excited to read all these in the coming year! :D
We had a quick visit to Chapters today and I picked up a few books:My Grandmother Sends Her Regards and Apologises by Fredrik Backman.
The Dog Who Came in from the Cold by Alexander McCall Smith
The Two and a half Pillars of Wisdom by McCall Smith as well.

I'm looking forward to Prince Lestat. Anne Rice is one of me favourite author although she can be a bit hit and miss.
I enjoyed the last Vampire Chronicle so I'll pick the new one up at some point. Shes had a few stinkers over her career but I've enjoyed nearly all of the books that centre on Lestat

I really love Backman and found this one endearing. And, you know, I love McCall Smith. You have some happy reading ahead of you.

Trelawn, I can't find The two and a Half Pillars. What series is it?
It is the complete set of the Portuguese Irregular verb series, books 1-3. I haven't read any of them but when I saw the entire set for €3.99 I couldn't resist.

I loved Lestat he's my favorite :)
Margo wrote: "Kara I don't think it's the kind of series you to read in order - it's one you dip and out of ;-)"Thank God! I really want to read this one :D
Margo wrote: "Be sure to let us know how you get on, there's a few Anne Rice fans here ;-)"I will! I remember when I picked up Interview with the Vampire It was so well written I couldn't take my nose out of it!

I got one book for Christmas, The Phantom Atlas: The Greatest Myths, Lies and Blunders on Maps which is beautiful to look at.

OK, even though I have an enormous TBR pile, I went a bit mad in the Kindle 12 days of Christmas sale. I am posting from my phone so I can only write the names, I can't add links. I got: The Fire Child by S.K. Tremayne, Red Ribbons by Louise Phillips, The Essex Serpent by Sarah Somebody, Everyone Brave is Forgiven by Chris Cleave, Beatlebone by Kevin Barry and American Gods by Neil Gaiman. No more buying until I reduce my TBR!

I went to Chapters after work and have just bought Fahrenheit 451 and Hex . So I am ready for the monthly read. I may use Hex as my horror book for the genre challenge as well (if I haven't read it already that is).

I learned so much about salt mining. I love all his books but this and Sarum: The Novel of England are my favorites. Have you read him before?

Like you I'm not sure I'll hold out til the challenge!

Very interested in what everyone thinks of Hex - I read it towards the end of last year and gave it 3 stars.

There are many little local used bookshops in Queretaro's Centro Historico that have a shelf or two of books in English, and I regularly scout them. On Monday I picked up four paperbacks:The Essential James Joyce, ed. Harry Levin (Penguin)
Len Deighton, The Ipcress File
F. Scott Fitzgerald, The Pat Hobby Stories
Mark Kurlansky, 1968: The Year that Rocked the World
Grand total spent: 120 pesos ($6.00).
I also noted a number of other titles for future purchase. I try not to buy everything I see the same day (partly because I can't afford to).

Some of the scenes were just a bit intense for me, they crossed the line into distasteful. I didn't blink during King's Gerald's Game but this book..I don't know. The story is wonderful though, those 3 stars were purely for the imagination behind it.
One interesting fact - the author changed the ending completely in the English language version - he said the original ending wouldn't work for countries like the USA. I've been searching for someone who's read the original who can tell me that ending - perhaps I wouldn't have been so unsatisfied with the novel if it kept its intended ending...

My 1938 (though I think it is actually a 1928) copy of The Irish RM and other experiences just arrived. The stories are reprints from:Some Experiences of an Irish RM, Further Experiences of an Irish RM and In Mr Knox's Country. I am not sure that it includes all of the stories of the three books as its 603 pages?
I used the Amazon look inside feature and it does seem to include all the stories from the books . :)

I'm not getting much reading done at the moment though I'm working my way through 2 great books, The Book of Lost Things and A Closed and Common Orbit.
I'm spending a lot of time brushing up on my french in preparation for a trip to Nantes to see my son on his 21st birthday!
