Cathleen | 2409 comments I think with everyone's recent and upcoming trips--we should have another discussion thread for posting photos from all these places. I would love to see the Northern Lights.

Paul I put a guide up in technical notes a while back but I can repeat again. You need to host them on a site like Tinypics.com , then put the link here with a bit of code.

Really! Sounds great. Where are you headed? How many books are you bringing? When I spent 2 months on sabbatical in Barcelona in 2006 - pre e-books - I visited an English language used bookstore almost weekly. Not only to buy books, but to spend time speaking English. Sadly it is now closed. The owner was trying to go online but I think the task was too onerous, at least with the capability of software and a single person, to handle. Sadly the store is now gone. I also brought a load of books for my 5 months in Brazil. There were some English-language books available there but they were, of course, quite expensive.

Cathleen - I haven't really 'announced' it yet but I am on my way to Scotland by way of Dublin at the end of the month. I'll be in Scotland for 12 days, 8 on Shetland and 6 in Ireland - Dublin and Belfast, at the beginning and end of my trip. I plan to post at least one pic a day on Instagram. Those who want to follow me should add bdegarjune16 and the can see my photos. As far as I know Instagram is a smart phone only app - so those w/o smart phones sadly will have to wait til I can upload.
Seraphina - if you have an online photo "home" such as Flickr, it's easy to put everything there and post a link. Also, I tend to tag photos on flickr as public or private. That way photos of friends who don't want to be all over the internet are kept separate.

Barbara (bdegar) | 4626 comments I was in Shetland in October 2012 for a week. But in summer, the 'summer dim' will mean it never gets dark. I'm with a group of knitters staying here:

Culturally Shetland is more Nordic than what many think of as Scotland - no kilts or bagpipes but many people can live without too much of that.

message 1909: by Trelawn (new)

Trelawn As well as Changing Places by David Lodge which arrived this week, I also ordered 84 Charing Cross Road which is a record of correspondance between an American lady and a bookseller in Charing Cross over a number of years. Finally I ordered The Longest Journey which is the final E.M. Forster novel I have to read.

message 1910: by [deleted user] (new)

84, Charing Cross Road was serialised on the radio more than a few years ago which is where I came across it first. The American actor Elaine Stritch (who was a character in her own right) starred. I never saw the film (1987) but it has an all star cast: Anthony Hopkins, Anne Bancroft, Judi Dench. Goodness knows whether the book would stand the test of time but I enjoyed it and it dramatised very well indeed. It also influenced my reading. Hope that you enjoy it.

message 1911: by Trelawn (new)

Trelawn I'm planning to read it soon after it arrives so I'll let you know what I think of it Theresa.

Barbara, thanks for sharing that website and those pictures. I am envious of you--that location looks stunning. I love the look of that landscape and the house looks like it will be welcoming and restful.

Trelawn - I read it a couple of years ago and really liked it!

Cathleen- it's remote and no internet! what could be better? Though we will be going out and about in addition to having workshops in the house.

message 1914: by Barbara (new)

Barbara (bdegar) | 4626 comments I stopped by Politics and Prose today for just a single item and walked away with 3 books for myself:
The Secret Lives of Puffins (remainder $12.98 down from $35) - as I am a big fan of puffins. I'll be seeing more on Shetland. I saw loads of them on the Great Skellig during nesting season in 1998. Also Lost in Translation: An Illustrated Compendium of Untranslatable Words from Around the World - the perfect book for a multilingual linguist, and Clever Girl by Tessa Hadley ($6.98 remainder).

message 1915: by Allan (new)

Allan Barbara, Politics and Prose really would be dangerous for an addict like me-particularly their remainders!

I saw a couple of books that might interest you but don't worry, I didn't buy them:) And only one of my purchases (not a book) was the gift I went to buy, sigh.

Heather - I'll be in Scotland July 27-Aug 8. The main part of my trip will be on Shetland with a group of knitters. I am also stopping in Edinburgh for 3 days and then to Aberdeen to catch the ferry. So I am currently looking at Audible to add a couple of Scottish titles. Probably one of Alexander McCall Smith's Bertie books. I have pre-ordered his newest Sunday Philosopher's Club book The Novel Habits of Happiness: An Isabel Dalhousie Novel which is coming out next Tuesday. Hopefully Amazon will get it to me by Weds. so I can read it before I leave Friday night.

So I think it's about time to put myself on a BBB (to also include acquiring free books). I went out for a walk a few days ago and stopped by The Little Free Library closest to my house. While there I got two books.

Lords of Misrule and Human Croquet.

My copy of Go Set a Watchman has also arrived, and I've orderedGlamour in Glass. I should point out in my defense on Glamour in the Glass, it's a second in a series that I adored the first of, AND it's not available at the library (which seems to only have books 3+4 out of a 5 book series).

I think I will put the book buying ban into effect until my TBR here on Goodreads is down to 295. Perhaps a good way to approach things would be to start with the shortest books and work my way up.

We are aiming for the end of July also for Scotland, we are torn between Fife and Dumfries but will be spending a day in Glasgow.

Ended up booking a weekend in Inverness for the end of July - its almost a 9 hour drive so a little iffy about that! If I put myself on a book buying ban, with the terms of it being lifted once my TBR decreases, I would never buy another! My TBR stands tall at 3864 books at the moment.
Sadly it turns out I left my copy of TKAMB in Eire, so will have to try and obtain a copy from the library before I can delve into GSAW. Just purchased The Iliad on Audbile narrated by Anton Lesser. Had a free credit and was stuck what to use it for as I'm not a fan of audio books at all but I really like Lesser's voice and think I could happily wile away the 17 hours listening to him read me The Iliad.

Barbara (bdegar) | 4626 comments Paul wrote: "Are you in Ireland before or after Scotland"

I'm flying in and out of Dublin. I am trying to resist book buying til I'm on my way home. But whatever I buy in Dublin I'll have to schlep to Northern Ireland unless I can talk the hotel into holding a bag for 2 days (I'm at what was Bewley's at the airport on arrival from Aberdeen and the night before I leave. There is also left luggage at Dublin airport, but it's pricey.

message 1926: by Trelawn (new)

Trelawn @ Heather I'd imagine listening to the Iliad is enjoyable, after all it was originally an oral poem and was only written down later. I have read it a few times but mostly in sections for teaching it, let me know how you get on with the audio.

Have a wonderful trip! Two weeks vacation time seems more American than what I've heard is given in Europe. It's so great you are getting this chance to travel widely.

message 1936: by Allan (new)

Barbara, two weeks is the standard European holiday time, think maybe Seraphina meant she has longer than a fortnight off and it's a truly once off especially in healthcare - even your two weeks they want booked WELL in advance.

message 1938: by Seraphina (new)

Seraphina Yep Heather is right, have 4 weeks off, will never get time off like that again.

message 1939: by Barbara (new)

Barbara (bdegar) | 4626 comments I must be thinking of France. Two weeks is standard here, but as I have always been a teacher (now university prof) I have part or all of the summer off. This summer I worked 2 extra months and have about 4 1/2 weeks off. But university professors spend part of their summer working on curriculum and writing, sigh. Nevertheless, it's better than going into work every day.

Barbara (bdegar) | 4626 comments Back on topic - in preparation for my trip I got the audiobooks H is for Hawk and Bertie Plays the Blues. I am out of credits and may buy 3 more, but am not sure I will be doing much listening on my travels.

message 1941: by Trelawn (new)

Trelawn Bertie Plays the Blues is on my shelf, it's the next one in the series for me.

message 1942: by Sara (new)

Sara | 2357 comments Mod
I felt that Bertie Plays The Blues was a particularly strong offering in the series. When I read it earlier this year I said, "This was another great offering in the 44 Scotland Street Series. I liked the focus on the trials and tribulations of the long suffering Bertie and also on Matthew and Elspeth and their newborn triplets. I also love how distinctly Scottish these books (in particular this one) are...Rather than being a distraction for an American reader such as myself, they add atmosphere and depth." Barbara and Trelawn you are in for a treat!

message 1943: by Allan (new)

Allan Audible UK is trying to bankrupt me at present. Today they launched a 48 hour, 75% off sale of 100 titles, two of which I bought for just over £4 each - The Brethren by Robert Merle, a book that I have on my shelf but will listen to instead, and I Never Knew That About New York by Christopher Winn, a book I'd never heard of before, but one that seems right up my street.

I did have buyer's remorse though, and returned the Bryson Short History that I bought yesterday-my dad telling me that he has the audiobook of it may well have played a part in my decision, saying that...

Allan Based on its reviews on Audible, Amazon and Goodreads, I bought Audible US' Daily Deal today, The Prince of Tides by Pat Conroy for $4.95. There seem to be a lot of people who view it as their favourite book ever, so I reckoned it was worth taking a punt on, despite its 22 hour length.

message 1947: by Colleen (new)

Everyone traveling have a wonderful time.
Hopefully next year I will be too;)
I stopped at the second hand book store and I bought
On Beauty
The Language of Paradise
Hausfrau I don't know about this ,but the cover is pretty and it was 2 dollars...
The Last Bookaneer
Wingshooters
The Cat's Table
Lovers at the Chameleon Club, Paris 1932 for a grand total of 11 dollars.
