Happy birthday, Trelawn! You certainly have been spoiled with your gifts, no doubt deservedly so-enjoy the weekend! :)
Thanks Allan and Kevin :-) My guys brought me for a gorgeous brekkie this morning as well. I could get used to this :-)
Happy Birthday Trelawn ! Sounds like you are having a great day .I have Human Traces on my TBR list too so when you get to read it I'd love to know your thoughts on it.
Happy birthday, Trelawn! Sounds like a wonderful day and I want to hear all about your stay in the castle, it sounds lovely!
In addition to the two books I bought that I mentioned in the other thread, I bought The Green Road by Anne Enright, my in person Book Club read for this month, and Tender by Belinda McKeon in Easons on a 'buy one get one half price' deal, which was great because both books were already discounted from their rrp anyway. That's definitely my purchases complete for the forseeable future-I promise! :)
...and if you believe that you'll believe anything ;)
Waiting for the green road to come down in price, interesting to see what you make of it. Got good review in the times
The Enright cost me £4.50 after discount today, rather than the £12.99 list price, since I paid the 'full price' of £10.99 for the McKeon, which I want to read anyway-great value! Easons were selling it at £9.99 as a standalone, still a better deal than Waterstones, which I often find they have for new releases, and certainly Irish books.I flagged that the Enright book was just out when the book club chose it, but they were happy enough to go ahead with it.
So it will be no surprise to anyone, but I managed to find two bookstores (including the big indie, Elliot Bay) in Seattle and buy numerous books. I'm adding them to my to be read shelf and will post a list when I'm home Wednesday.

Southwest is the rare airline that still allows you up to two checked bags for free as long as they don't exceed 50 pounds.
Sara wrote: "Southwest is the rare airline that still allows you up to two checked bags for free as long as they don't exceed 50 pounds."Well going from MASS to Seattle on Southwest takes an intrepid soul. It's a trade off but I am sure you will take advantage of the free bags.
Being in Western, MA, I can fly out of Bradley near Hartford (a Southwest hub) pretty easy. There was one layover on the way there in Denver. On the way back tomorrow, I layover in Baltimore!
I'll probably still have just one checked bag on the way back. My bag on the way out weighed in at 37 pounds, so I have room to spare. I can then stick my purse inside a canvass bag, fill the rest with books, and make that a second carry-on. I have a plan!
Colleen wrote: "I just pre-ordered The Last Days of Rabbit Hayes"That book has gotten a lot of good reviews, Colleen.
I've been buying too many books over the past few weeks. I'll have to go on a BBB. Most of them were used, but not all. I found Irish Fiction: An Introduction and How We Learn: The Surprising Truth About When, Where, and Why It Happens in one local bookshop a couple of weeks ago. The Irish fiction book had a chapter on the "best and best known" writers, and it piqued my curiosity to see what I've read or not. I visited one of my brothers a few weeks ago, and being the lovely brother he is, he brought me to a few second-hand bookstores, and I bought Penelope Lively's The Photograph and A Pint of Plain: Tradition, Change and the Fate of the Irish Pub. I was uncertain about that one; I thought it might be too cheesy, but Colum McCann's praise for the book was on the front cover, so that swayed me. And then a few days ago, I was in Shelburne Falls, MA---and when I was in a bookshop there, I bought What Strange Creatures and In Search of the Rose Notes. I wasn't familiar with the books or the author, but the bookshop owner told me that the author, lives in Shelburne Falls and that they were good mystery/suspense novels. I always think it's fun to buy a book in the town where an author lives. And I picked up Bellfield Hall really only because the cover reminded me of Jane Austen and it was only 3.00. I should have enough paperbacks for vacation....

The Book Mill that I usually refer to is in Montague, so I'm super curious about what bookstore Cathleen is referring to. Shelburne Falls is also close to me, and I could always use more books.
Barbara and Sara, the Book Mill is in Montague. I didn't go there this time; my sister is visiting in a few weeks so I'm saving that visit to go with her. The bookstore in Shelburne Falls is called Boswell's Books, named after a previous owner's cat. It's small but really cute. There's another used bookstore there, too, Sara. Well worth a visit if you're in the mood to buy a few books.
Cathleen - if I get up to MASS while Sara's still there, the 3 of us should meet up at the Book Mill. Sadly (really I'm :) not (:) my trip to Ireland and Scotland at the end of the month means no trip to New England this summer. Sara gave me a Book Mill mug so I think of visiting there often. Also one of the two women leading the group I am joining in the Shetland Islands, is a Shetlander who until recently was living in western MASS and often posted pics on Instagram of the Book Mill. She, hubby and teenaged kids just moved back to Scotland, though the Edinburgh.
This is the second day in a row that Goodreads is crashing my computer (: It freezes or just turns off. My Apple Care expires July 24th so I'll have to keep an eye on things to make sure it's just GR and not my laptop. So I couldn't edit the above post - second to last word should be "to" not "the".
I just got Basil Blackshaw, Painter which is about the Belfast School of Art educated painter. On the way is The Novel Habits of Happiness An Isabel Dalhousie Novel by Alexander McCall Smith". I know this series is nearly as popular as McCall Smith's other series, but I love them. The book will be released around July 21st. I preordered it and am supposed to get it the 21st which will give me only a couple days to read it before my trip.
When I tried to post the above comment, I got a pink box full of red writing – lines and lines and lines saying unexpected error. Is anyone else having problems?
I'm having a few problems with loading goodreads as well Barbara. It often gives me a screen saying the site is over capacity at the moment, so I wouldn't worry too much about your computer.

It's a beautiful ride out there, and it would be great to meet you and Sara. There's even a little cafe/restaurant right there so we could have tea. A GoodReads Ireland Meet Up...in Massachusetts :)
Barbara, I've heard of Basil Blackshaw, and I see he comes from the area in which I currently live-it sounds like a pretty niche book, which interestingly enough, doesn't seem to be available over here.
Allan wrote: "Barbara, I've heard of Basil Blackshaw, and I see he comes from the area in which I currently live-it sounds like a pretty niche book, which interestingly enough, doesn't seem to be available over ..."His name showed up in one of the newspaper articles posted, I think, by you - there was a reference to paintings of the Troubles - an exhibit from the early 2000's. When I see names or books that interest me, I immediately see if I can get a free (Paperback Swap) or used copy.
The Basil Blackshaw book shows used copies for around $10 including one at Better World Books UK. But when I went to the UK site, the price was £24.98!!! It makes no sense.
It really doesn't make much sense! I'll maybe see if I can find a copy in the second hand bookstore in town. My Robin Bryans book came today btw...
Allan wrote: "It really doesn't make much sense! I'll maybe see if I can find a copy in the second hand bookstore in town. My Robin Bryans book came today btw..."You don't have to - I found one cheaply in good condition and ordered it:)
Know you'll enjoy the Robin Bryans.
Barbara and Cathleen a Goodreads Ireland Meetup/trip to The Book Mill sounds delightful. Now that I'm back from Seattle, I need to start searching for a second PT job or a FT one...also an apartment for September 1st when my sublet runs out. Barring unforeseen catastrophe though I should be staying into the fall and even winter, so we have some time yet!

Allan wrote: "Barbara, that's very kind of you to find the book for me-thank you! :)"When I saw the price was more than 15 times as much in the UK, I decided at least one copy that ended up on this side of the pond needed to go back.
So as promised several comments ago, here is a report on the book buying mischief I've been up to.
My trip to Seattle started in the airport in Hartford where I just had to browse the airport bookstore. I came away with Hogfather. Emma commented on my feed that this was an odd time of the year to be reading Hogfather. She's right, but it was the Discworld novel the airport bookstore had that was closest to where I am in the series. It was also a great light engaging choice for the plane. I'm about 80% through and loving all the references along with this being my first introduction to the character of Susan (Death's Granddaughter).
During a 2 hour break from the conference, I went out to buy a doughnut. When I discovered I still had time to kill after the doughnut, my natural impulse was to search on my phone for nearby bookstores...only to discover that I was about half a mile from Elliot Bay, the well regarded local indie. I was particularly impressed with their periodicals section, but all around their selection was top notch. In about 30 minutes, I did impressive damage to my wallet (see below) even without venturing onto the store's second level. Who knows how much trouble I could have gotten up to if I hadn't had to hightail in back to the conference. My only complaint about the store was that their cafe section where the bathrooms were located was under renovation.
While there I bought:
When We Were Outlaws
The Racial Imaginary: Writers on Race in the Life of the Mind
Ms. Marvel, Vol. 3: Crushed
The Princess and the Pony (gift for a friend who is studying to be an elementary school teacher)
The Guild of Saint Cooper (The author was described as a Phillip K. Dick of the Southwest)
Death and the Penguin (International mystery)
The Man with the Compound Eyes: A Novel (International science fiction)
Issue 8 of this zine
A Bag to Hold Everything!
After the conference I visited a couple of friends, and on Monday we did touristy things...including visiting Pike's Place Market...which had a bookstore (the first one mentioned in this article). While there I bought GraceLand. After loving Americanah earlier this year, I'm eager to read more books by Nigerian authors.
Finally I got off BookMooch (a book trading site), The Revenants.
I think it might be time for a BBB.

Susan Sto Helit is a very interesting character. You should try Soul Music to see where she starts out. I really enjoyed Hogfather for tge concepts of belief , and the Boredom Fairy . Plus Death is such a good character .
Sara, that is one astounding haul. Fair play!!! I'm already trying to suss out ideal bookshops for me to visit in Sweden.
An impressive haul, Sara! I liked the look of When We Were Outlaws when I saw that you'd started to read it, and have put it in my Amazon basket to buy at a later stage, when my own bbb is over! ;) Good luck with the job / flat hunting btw!
Sara - that's quite a haul. Kevin - I thought the Northern Lights were seen in winter. Am I wrong? anyway - whereever you're headed, enjoy.
Wow - Seraphina - that's quite a trip!
Seraphina wrote: "I'm off to Sri Lanka and Thailand myself in 3 weeks. Can not wait."A few lads are just back from Thailand this week. According to them it is definitely the most mental place they have been whilst also being the most beautiful.
Barbara, you're dead right but I'll be there for 6 months!
