Well moving is a powerful disincentive to acquiring more books. I'm already moving 4 boxes and one medium sized crate of books. The car can only hold so much! I did get an $25 Amazon gift card from my Aunt in the mail, so I may treat myself later to a couple paperbacks off my wishlist...Those I can get shipped to MA though!

Happy birthday Sara! May this year bring you more joy than you've known in previous years! And good luck with the move, always a stressful time!

Paul Glad you liked Dodger. Mort is an interesting twist on Death as a character. Quite a bit of fun :-)

message 1661: by 1901 (new)

1901 Seeing as it is the outgoing quarterly read and i never got round to it before i just got an audio version of Dracula. It's apparently more of a production than a reading with an "all star" cast including Tim Curry and Alan Cumming. Looking forward to it...

message 1662: by Kevin (new)

Kevin I'm actually reading Dracula myself as well. There has been lots of praise for the adaption with Tim Curry, I think a few folks on hear listened to it for the quarterly read.

message 1663: by 1901 (new)

1901 Ok, must check in on the non-spoiler discussion on it to see if anyone commented on this audio version. I thought Curry would be cast as Dracula as he usually makes a good villain but i don't see anyone cast as the count. That seems strange having seen some film versions but i guess i'll find out why.

I listened to the Dracula audiobook with Tim Curry, Alan Cummings and other narrators and I really liked it !

message 1665: by Allan (new)

Allan I listened to the free Librivox audiobook, complete with amateur narrators and terrible Transylvanian accents-I still loved the story though!

Sara | 2357 comments Mod
I listened to the Tim Curry and Alan Cummings version too. It was splendid, although to be fair I'd listen to Alan Cummings read the phone book!

message 1667: by Allan (new)

Allan I was looking through my Amazon basket earlier, and noticed that I was able to get two recently published hardcovers of books, on whose price I had been keeping an eye, for a penny each, so I went ahead and ordered The Road to Reckoning by Robert Lautner and Let the Games Begin by Italian author, Niccolo Ammaniti.

I'm continuing to try to widen the subject matter of my tbr shelf, and both of these books should fit the bill.

message 1668: by 1901 (new)

1901 Glad ye liked it Sara & Barbara and I hope I will too.
But now that amateur narration version sounds like more fun Allan

message 1669: by Allan (new)

Allan The 'I vant to suck youa blud' type accent from a few of the narrators was at the same time cringeworthy and entertaining. :)

message 1670: by Allan (new)

Allan Emma wrote: "It was basically narrated by the Count from Sesame St"

More like someone doing a bad impression of the Count from Sesame Street-and I'm not even joking! You can hear for yourself from about 3 min 40 sec of Chapter 2 of the link below.

That's gas! "So bad it's good" seems to fit.

message 1672: by Seraphina (new)

Seraphina I really enjoyed the librivox version, for some reason it just worked

message 1673: by Allan (new)

Allan Today, I purchased Redemption Falls by Joseph O'Connor, because I found out that a new organised book group, based at the Mac in Belfast is reading it this month, and I may decide to join them. It's the follow up to The Star Of The Sea.

I'm wondering, has anyone read the book, and if so, would it be beneficial to read the first one, or could I get away with not doing so? Both are nearly 500 pages, which is why I need to know pretty soon if I'd be better with the background of the first...

Allan from what I've heard it's not in any way a sequel.

message 1675: by Seraphina (new)

Seraphina Picked up the city and the city by china meville today. Seems to be a bit of a hit or miss book so fingers crossed

message 1676: by Sara (new)

Sara | 2357 comments Mod
I think The City & the City is well worth a read for science fiction and fantasy fans...even if it winds up not being a favorite. I rated it only 3 stars, but several members of my book group felt differently, and it was definitely thought provoking/interesting stylistically.

message 1677: by Paul (new)

Paul I tried a different Mieville book and his style grated on me. Good story but just couldnt enjoy the writing

I did read Redemption Road several years back for a book club. I think the characters are connected to Star of the Sea, but my memory is that Redemption Road isn't a sequel.

message 1679: by Kevin (new)

Kevin I doubt The Bell Jar will blow you away, Emma, but I think you'll appreciate what Plath was doing with the novel.

message 1680: by Barbara (new)

Barbara (bdegar) | 4626 comments Emma wrote: "Today I bought The Bell Jar and Americanah"

Hope you like Americanah as much as I did. Given that there is a large Nigerian community in the Dublin area, I hope more people in Dublin give it a read. I work with a lot of Nigerians and have had a large number of students from the country.

message 1681: by Allan (new)

Allan After looking at the other books on my wishlist, I decided to go for a Joseph O'Neill 'double dunker' and buy Redemption Falls on audio-I'll listen to it, and aim to continue to read The Star Of The Sea as my physical book.

So in advance of moving I had a couple books ordered and sent to my new place...because nothing says home like book mail!

Tenderwire and All Names Have Been Changed from Kennys based upon The Devil I Know being one of my top reads of 2014.

And The Girl from HOPPERS (Love & Rockets). I got a $25 Amazon giftcard from my Aunt Cara for my birthday about a week ago. I was responsible and ordered some badly needed socks, but decided against being too responsible and ordered this graphic novel with the money left over from the card plus a bit of my own funds.

P.S. And a very happy somewhat belated birthday to Paul. The Shadowed Sun is one of the limited # of books I brought to Amazon, but I couldn't find my copy of the first book in the series (so I could reread it in advanced of reading the Shadowed Sun). Next week's projects include a trip to the local library to get a card, so I can read that and other books I didn't bring with me.

I never heard of it before today but it looked interesting and didn't seem to read like non fiction.I'm ashamed to admit I don't usually read non fiction but I'll let you know when I finally get to it:)

message 1697: by Allan (last edited May 02, 2015 12:35PM) (new)

Allan Colleen, that's a good haul for next to nothing-the Ferrante novel is hard to come by for much less than full price over here, so I reckon you've got a bargain. Enjoy!

Colleen | 1205 comments The secondhand bookstore I go to is run by the town in a house donated by a woman. The books are donated by people and the workers are volunteers .The prices for hardcovers are 2 dollars and paperback trade or mass market is 1 dollar. It doesn't matter how popular it is or how new...you just have to hit it right. It's only open 2 days a week Wednesday and Saturday 10 to 4.The money goes to the library to buy new books.I was very lucky today.
