Cathleen | 2409 comments For those of you who've been to London recently, do you have any recommendations for bookstores? I think I may be going soon (someone cancelled last-minute on a college-sponsored trip). Any favorite ones I should visit?

In 2007, the Smithsonian Folk Life Festival featured Northern Ireland and the NI Culture Bureau sponsored a 4 month series of events. One of those was a performance of A Night in November by Marie Jones. She was there as was Glenn Patterson and Lucy Caldwell. A lot of the audience was African American due to the locale where it played and the response was tremendous. It was really an unforgettable evening.

Allan - I paid $9.50 for the book and $4 for shipping. I was very nicely wrapped which I appreciated.

Today two more book arrived-The Big Snow by David Park (used) and Clockers by David Price (Paperback Swap).

Paul Cathleen , London is fantastic for bookstores. I'd highly recommend Hatchards, Warerstones at Charing Cross and any of the collectors shops on Cecil Court

message 1405: by Seraphina (new)

Seraphina Just picked up great expectations, north and south and the mill on the floss all free on kindle.

message 1406: by Seraphina (new)

Seraphina Really is considering they mightn't be everyone's cup of tea. If I read one I loved I'd prob buy a nice physical copy

Thanks, Paul :) I've just put them down on my list.

I loved The Help, but it made me so angry.

I went to the library this morning to return books and get a couple things I had put on hold advance of the incoming winter storm. I managed to only get the things I had put on hold!

Adam: This is by an author whose graphic novels I love, and it's for the "Lez Reads" book group I'm in.

All That Is Solid Melts into Air: This one is for the Irish book group Barbara and I both belong to.

message 1413: by pauline_nlp (new)

pauline_nlp (noircirlespages) Hi Trelawn, I don't know her sorry. Why ? :)

message 1414: by Trelawn (new)

Trelawn @ Pauline, i just heard of her recently but I don't think much of her work has been translated so I was wondering if you had read anything by her.

message 1415: by Kevin (new)

Kevin Well I was in Dublin for a short while today as my sister was running the 5k in Phoenix Park so I had to do a quick run to Chapters. You may see a theme...
Mistborn: The Final Empire
The Well of Ascension
The Hero of Ages
Steelheart
The Graveyard Book
The Once and Future King
plus I just order Sula from Kennys.

message 1416: by Paul (new)

Paul You've given Brandon Sanderson your weeks food money. Did you not pick up the Legion/ Emperors Soul book for 5.99 as well.

I really love the Mistborn trilogy (and there's [book:The Alloy of Law|10803121]) set in the same universe which I haven't read yet). It has perhaps the best system of magic I've ever seen in a fantasy novel. I also approve of your purchase of Sula. Have you read any other Morrison Kevin?

message 1418: by Kevin (new)

Kevin Bah Paul, I didn't see it, I think I might have had tunnel vision as I knew what I was buying when I went in. I have Elantris on my "shelf" waiting to be read too. I should be up again soon anyway as I plan on going to see The Pillowman in the Gaiety in two weeks. I will save up for part two.

I haven't read any other Morrison Sara but Sula was strongly recommended to me so I said I'd bump it up the list. It's quite short so it is an attractive read for that alone.

message 1419: by Paul (new)

Paul Its a great short read so worth keeping an eye out for. ☺ Especially as a HB for that price.
Chapters is always worth a look in.
Might have to organise another trip with Trelawn soon ( last two visits were myself and the little fella)

message 1420: by Trelawn (new)

Trelawn I may have to give Morrison another try at some point. I tried Beloved in college and really didn't like it. I have not been tempted to try another thus farm

message 1421: by Trelawn (new)

I will search some informations and maybe read her book if you want an opinion :)

message 1423: by Trelawn (new)

Trelawn That's ok Pauline, i was just wondering.

message 1425: by Paul (new)

Paul Saw that come up. Its very cheap for a Neil Gaiman limited edition . It will definitely treble in value the second its sold out and only increase from there.

message 1426: by Paul (new)

Paul Today I bought two books in a quick Chapters visit. There was still some left after Kevins visit.
I boughta debut fantasy calledThe Relic Guild by Edward Cox . Good premise and I meant to pick it up last year.
I also bought a classic scifiA Princess of Mars by Edgar Rice Burroughs as it is possibly going to be a group read next month in my other book group and I'm ine of the people who actually enjoyed the Disney adaption John Carter

message 1427: by Kevin (new)

Kevin You enjoyed John Carter? You weirdo. I just really hate Taylor Kitsch, the man just can't act and annoys me.

message 1428: by Donna (last edited Feb 23, 2015 10:06AM) (new)

Donna McCaul Thibodeau (celtic_donna) | 1150 comments Erm. I also enjoyed John Carter. I'm starting to get really scared as I find more and more things that Paul and I have in common. :)

message 1429: by Paul (new)

Paul Scary stuff Donna.
We won't listen to the man who sold his soul to Amazon yesterday.☺

message 1430: by Kevin (new)

message 1431: by Paul (new)

message 1433: by Barbara (new)

Barbara (bdegar) | 4626 comments I got to John Boyne. It was the first reading of his North American tour. He was great but the book store employee introducing him and running things was just awful. She rushed everything, gave an inadequate introduction and cut off questions. The whole reading and signing was over in 40 minutes. I bought the book and Boyne was great. I am undecided to send feedback to the bookstore.

message 1434: by Susan (new)

Susan | 4707 comments I would. A 40 minute signing is just ridiculous.

message 1435: by Paul (new)

Paul That's terrible Barbara. I've seen John freely mingle with his fans for a whole evening so he wouldnt enjoy it getting rushed.

message 1436: by Allan (new)

Allan That's a shame that the Boyne event didn't go well, Barbara. Was the event at Politics and Prose? You normally only have good things to say about them.

message 1437: by Gavin (new)

Gavin (bookmad93) | 871 comments so i used my voucher i got for my Birthday today and a little bit extra, sadly Easons did not have American Gods so will need to get it next week perhaps off Abebooks or book depository ( i love there bookmarks).
The Complete Novels of James Joyce i thought it was about time i read these.
Dracula Not the cover I wanted but then again had a tight budget and couldn't go over it.

Still Alice Finally, this was the final book i picked up as if i went to any other's it would've ended up getting into more series and i still have the last set of books i purchased to get at.

message 1438: by Paul (new)

Paul I have two copies of American Gods ☺ Well one is Trelawns. We have about a hundred or so of those wonderful book depository book marks ☺

message 1440: by Paul (new)

Paul I think we finished the last set . ☺We missed out on one two years ago and it broke my heart

message 1441: by Gavin (new)

Gavin (bookmad93) | 871 comments speaking of sets i do still need to collect the rest Michael Scott older work and under his pseudonym

message 1442: by Paul (new)

Paul Think the last of his books I read was October Moon and I was possibly in primary school at the time so thats a long time ago .

I arrived home to find the Spring 2015 Stinging Fly in the mail along with a notice that it was time to renew my subscription. I definitely will be renewing. It's a bit pricey but well worth it.

message 1444: by Kevin (new)

Kevin I got mine Monday evening as well Sara, and this issue has a nice cover too. I even tweeted the magazine when I got it because there was a storm here and it was perfect timing.

Great minds think a like Kevin. I meant to include in my post that I found the cover of this one particularly striking. Barbara have you gotten yours yet?

It was at Politics and Prose but the employee who ran it was someone I had never seen before. After that experience, I'd say this is one employee who should not have much contact with the public. Boyne was wonderful and very gracious.

Just got it yesterday (it probably arrived in Weds. mail).

Barbara (bdegar) | 4626 comments I was in the neighborhood and had time to kill so I went to the used book store at one of our local libraries. The selection of trade paperbacks (I think they're called 'large format' in Ireland and the UK) was terrific and everything was priced $1.50 (97p or E1.34). I bought a whole shopping bag of books- 15 total for less than $20:
Lush Life Richard Price
Eureka Street: A Novel of Ireland Like No Other
At Swim, Two Boys
The Forgotten Garden Kate Morton
The Riders Tim Winton
July, July Tim O'Brien
Italian Shoes Henning Mankell
Geographies of Home Loida Maritza Pérez
Two Lives William Trevor
The Vanishing Act of Esme Lennox Maggie O'Farrell
Sunshine on Scotland Street Alexander McCall Smith
and 4 books for younger readers:
Rowdy Irish Tales for ChildrenShamrocks, Harps, and Shillelaghs: The Story of the St. Patrick's Day Symbols
When Marian Sang: The True Recital of Marian Anderson
The Forbidden Schoolhouse: The True and Dramatic Story of Prudence Crandall and Her Students

message 1449: by Barbara (new)

Barbara (bdegar) | 4626 comments I just bought 3 more books on Amazon - jeezzzzz
The Irish Novel: 1960-2010 for only $2.07 plus shipping.
Little Brother - a children's book
Now and in the Hour of Our Death by Patrick Taylor.

message 1450: by Kevin (new)

Kevin Where do you put them all, Barbara? You must have a warehouse hidden somewhere.
