Recently bought (acquired) books!
After my last experience with Forester (excerpts of A Passage to India I'm not particularly eager to read anymore of his work. His writing style is probably just not for me. If I do read more of his writing, it will almost definitely be Maurice due to it's significance in the field of LGBT literature.
That's a fair comment Sara, even a "good" writers style is simply not for everyone. I think a lot of people write off books as not being good when what they really mean is that the style just doesn't work for them. I have heard good things about Maurice though so I look forward to reading it.

Mmm, yes, but so long ago I couldn't make a useful comment on it though.
The film has a very young Hugh Grant and a few others that make for amusing watching.

In addition to the books I bought that I posted about on the NI thread, I picked up a 1964 paperback edition of Brendan Behan's New York today for £2. Prices vary on Amazon, but with many over £20, I think I did pretty well!
Emma I meant to tell you they had the Ben Aaranovitch books on the specials table in Chapters. Sounds like you found them yourself.
I like having nice editions of the classics to. My mam bought me a boxed set of Austen's books and I have a cloth bound Jane Eyre and then of course there's my ecclectic Dickens collection.

What a nice shopping trip!
My copies of John Hewitts' Selected Poems (from The Book Depository) and The Feast Of Lupercal by Brian Moore (used) arrived today. Also my DVD of Seasons 1 and 2 of Shetland based on 4 books by Anne Cleeves.
The Moore novel is great, Barbara-you'll have to read it alongside Call My Brother Back and The Anatomy School, because as Bernard MacLaverty points out in the Literary Belfast clips, they all feature the same school, St Malachy's...

I like reading on a "theme" so that is a great suggestion.
So, I ended up buying a copy of The Miniaturist, which will go with me to Amsterdam in the morning, and took advantage of Tesco's 2 paperbacks for £7 by also buying a physical copy of Nora Webster, which I only have in audiobook. I'm pretty happy with the deal...
I bought NOS4R2 by Joe Hill to keep up the Vampire theme and it has been recommended here a few times. It was on special , 10 euro for the Hardback in chapters today ☺
I'm curious about it. I've read a couple of vampire books in the last few months and I'm enjoying them.
I just ordered a copy of December Bride by Sam Hanna Bell for around $3.50 with free shipping. I've found Abebooks has much better deals than Amazon.I DO have a copy of The Anatomy School by MacLaverty:)
I envy those of you in Ireland and the UK that can get great deals on paperback editions of brand new books.
Good to read that you got a cheap copy of the book, Barbara-it's interesting that shipping within the US is cheap-they must make the money shipping abroad, because it's unbelievably expensive!

It may be a special as I periodically get emails from them about free shipping promotions. I now start most of my searches for used books there rather than
Amazon and has been surprised at the lower prices.
I'm a long time fan of Abebooks as well. Taking shipping and price into account they almost always beat Amazon and the condition descriptions tend to be more accurate
I do pay attention to condition too. If the description is vague of generic I choose a different copy even if it costs a bit more.
@ Colleen I have read most of John Boyne's books but I am wary of picking this one up. I'll be interested to hear what yoy think of it.

Boy oh boy - thanks to a holiday Monday, and snow yesterday, I got SEVEN books in the mail today! From Kenny's - my new books - The Undertaking by Audrey Magee and Mother America by Nuala Ni Chonchuir.
One swap - Disgrace by JM Coetzee
And 4 (yes four) Northern Irish titles, all used:
As I Roved Out by Cathal O Byrne - a hefty 450 pages, published it seems in 1946.
Call My Brother Back by Michael McLaverty
Tea At Four O'clock by Janet McNeill
and Stones in His Pockets by Marie Jones.
And a wish was granted on Paperback Swap for Beyond Belfast: A 560 Mile Journey Across Northern Ireland On Sore Feet by Will Ferguson:)
Barbara, that's a pretty impressive haul! I looked for 'As I Roved Out' when you ordered it, and it was over £20 over here, so no doubt you got a good deal. I've never heard of the Ferguson book, so will check it out. Hopefully my copy of 'Maiden Dinosaur' will have arrived by the time I return from Amsterdam, as I'm keen to read more Janet McNeill, after enjoying 'Tea at Four O'Clock' so much.
