So I went to Barnes & Noble for one book ...I came out with Gretel and the Dark,The Name of the Wind,The Sweetness and Herring Girl. I need to stay out of there no willpower...

Hi ! Last weeks, I had twice the opportunity to go in a biggest town than mine, and I went twice in the same bookshop, and bought twice two books. So, it makes four books, in two weeks... So:-To kill a mockingbird, by Harper Lee
-Northanger Abbey, by Val McDermid
-The road, by Jack London
and - On the road, by Jack Kerouac
Hello, Pauline. You have an interesting selection of books there. They are very different from each other. I am sure someone has read Northanger Abbey by Val McDermid recently and no doubt they'll pop in and tell you about it.
And if we thought or book acquisition problems were bad...just look at this post from Savidge Reads!
So true ☺I will definitely be purchasing this week though.
Neil Gaimans new collection is out tomorrow and Joe Abercrombies new YA novel is out both of which I'm really looking forward to.

It looks as if there are a couple of duplicates there as well.....

I saw that with the Kate Atkinson I think. Thanfulky that rarely happens to me ☺ I've duplicates of one or two books but they're on purpose .
Me too, virtual and codex. Cannot bear to be devoid of the sight of books if if they aren't handled.
A house needs bookshelves. My dad was well chuffed at the weekend as he'd gotten two new bookshelves but hes all ready filled one
...which makes it tempting to go on a splurge to fill the other....
This does not violate my book buying ban. I swear.Ulysses Annotated
The International
Travels with Charley: In Search of America
The Mist
In fairness, 2/4 of those are technically because of ye. Reading Ulysses is just something every English Lit student has to do in their lives, not my fault. To be honest I had no other choice but to buy a King novel to counterbalance the hours I will waste researching the obscure references that Joyce makes and the clusters of grey hair that will inevitably nest in the mop of hair on my head will not really help me much in my nocturnal adventures. Wizened is definitely not an attractive look in a young fella. T'was simply out of my hands.
You've convinced me. Almost. LOL.
I've been pretty good this month--I've only bought a few actual books: The Last Days of Dogtown, The Storied Life of A.J. Fikry, Old Filth. I liked the first Elena Ferrante book so much that I bought the second one: The Story of a New Name and then when I was in the bookshop, I saw On an Irish Island: The Lost World of the Great Blasket. Maybe not so good...
That book about the Blasket Islands looks interesting so I've added it to my amazon blasket ;). Thanks Cathleen
Kevin wrote: "That book about the Blasket Islands looks interesting so I've added it to my amazon blasket ;). Thanks Cathleen"I thought so, too, Kevin. I've become acquainted with the young woman who works at the bookshop and she took one look at the cover and said--I wish I could go there now! :) Me, too.
We're quite lucky that there is so much literature connected with the islands so that their way of lives were somewhat recorded. For such a small community it is amazing the amount of writers and works linked to it.
Kevin I built in an exception to my book buying for any books I needed for my current book clubs and couldn't get from the library.
I checked Amazon again and was able to get a used copy of The International. With shipping it came to six bucks and change. Yes!

Kevin - Sara and I are part of a Joyce group here in DC that reads Joyce aloud. I've been through Ulysses twice with them and we are now reading Ulysses. Reading it aloud or listening to good recordings of it are essential. I first bought the book in my teens because my birthday is Blooms Day. It took me several decades to actually read it.

Barbara means that we're now reading Finnegan's Wake...95% incomprehensible.. Ulysses is only about 40% incomprehensible
Kevin wrote: "You've read it twice Barbara? You really punished yourself."I read Ulysses twice with the group - aloud:) Listened to most of a recorded version with a group as well.
I love reading about you all buying books makes me smile since i can't buy any myself (not that i need to i've a tower and a bag full of books to read)
Cphe wrote: "Kristin LavransdatterI've been circling around these for a while - has anyone read them?"
I read them years ago and then a couple of years ago bought a large book that contained all 3 (4?) books meaning to reread them. When I originally read them I loved them.
I got the Taxidermists Daughter for Christmas but havent gotten around to it yet. I really like Kate Mosses style
My copy of The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie arrived today so I am hoping to get to it in the next few days. It's quite a short book, I don't know why I always thought it was longer.
Went into two bookstores didnt buy a book :( good self control, granted i didn't brouse as i normally would.

It is astonishingly short isn't it? Have you seen the film with Maggie Smith?

Yes, Gavin, it's an old film and DMS ;) is perfect casting.
Theresa I haven't seen the film yet but I can't imagine it being anything other than brilliant with DMS in it. I'll read the book first. Film versions of A Passage to India and Howards End have also been recommended to me but I want to read the books first.
Yeah I read your review but as you said the book was almost an afterthought. I am looking forward to reading TPoMJB as I have a few 19th and 20th century classics on my list that I hope to finally get round to this year.
