I love that title !I hate when they change titles between countries because in second hand bookstores I always am attracted to the Irish/UK covers and not always realize I have the American Edition at home.

I need to read it soon too Theresa. When you read it let me know what you think of it.Haven't read anything by Trevor

I didn't realised that titles were changed for the American market. The UK/Irish title that Paul gave tells you so much more about the book and is such fun. Colleen, I'd be really put out to find that I'd acquired two copies of the same book but with different titles.

message 1204: by Paul (new)

Paul Its an Odd one Theresa but sometimes its completely different publishers making a call . Not always the right call either ☺

Yes it is annoying but as long as it only happens with second hand books its not so bad I just donate it to the library's secondhand bookstore and they can sell it to help the library.

Yes a prime example is The Shock of the Fall by Nathan Filer is the Irish/UK cover. The American cover is Where the Moon Isn't by Nathan Filer and I noticed its out in paperback and now it looks like this The Shock of the Fall by Nathan Filer

message 1207: by Paul (new)

Paul I didnt know that was under a different name. Its confusing as hell

message 1208: by [deleted user] (new)

Confusing and annoying. Here on GI we've also mentioned several times the different cover each side of the pond, albeit with the same title, for Barry's The Temporary Gentleman.

message 1209: by Paul (new)

Paul In saying that there are a few books where I've bought the US version as the cover is better. I got Prince Lestat this year in the US hardback , nicer cover , better paper and French cut. The US cover of the Martian was much nicer as well .

Barry's US cover was excellent and the one here, well, off putting at best :(

message 1211: by Paul (new)

Paul I like that Book Depository gives you the option of either cover ☺

message 1212: by [deleted user] (last edited Jan 23, 2015 07:07AM) (new)

Didn't know that! :) their book marks come in handy too.

message 1213: by Paul (new)

Paul I bought The Lion the Witch and The Wardrobe from them and got a book mark with a CS Lewis quote . Love it

message 1214: by Colleen (new)

Colleen | 1205 comments Did a book mark come with Nora Webster Theresa?

message 1215: by Trelawn (new)

Trelawn I just ordered a copy of The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/51.... It's been on my radar for a long while and as I am working my way through some classics this year I thought I'd give this a go.

Yes the UK cover of The Temporary Gentleman is not eye catching at all.

Yes it did! My other Xmas gift, from Allan, was also Book Depository and that came with a different one from the same series all designed by BD customers. They are lovely to have especially as I read mostly ebooks so they make codex feel even more special.

message 1218: by Seraphina (new)

Seraphina Strolling around o mahony's today(always a bad idea for my pocket) and picked up birdsong by faulks and Papillon. Sounded interesting

message 1219: by Kevin (new)

Kevin Would you believe six people got let go from there two days ago, Seraphina. Things aren't going too well.

message 1220: by Seraphina (new)

Seraphina Wow I'm surprised by that Kevin, there always seems to be people in there buying books midday. You still there? Do they have many staff?

message 1221: by Kevin (new)

Kevin I've given it a break while I'm up in Kilmallock teaching but I'll head back in the summer which is handy for me. At one point I would say there was 50-55 staff on the go in the shop but that would be down to around 25-30 now. The owner made some bad investments and the company is really suffering as a result, although I think things aren't as bad as they make it out to be.

message 1222: by Seraphina (new)

Seraphina I really think the shop would benefit by putting in a coffee shop area. There's plenty room to do it. Tell d boss that next time you see him lol ;)

message 1223: by Kevin (new)

Kevin Several of us have said it to him already haha they actually considered putting one in where the Irish fiction section is upstairs but in the end they decided against it. You're right though, they need it :)

Trelawn, I've always wanted to read that, too, and I was hoping/planning to read it this year. I've had it on my kindle for too long.

message 1227: by Trelawn (new)

Trelawn @ Cathleen it'll probably be a week or two before my copy arrives but when I get round to reading it I'll let you know what i think. I'd love to hear your thoughts on it too.

Barbara (bdegar) | 4626 comments I just got a copy of Dublin Noir: The Celtic Tiger vs. The Ugly American from Paperback Swap as well as Selected Stories by Robert Harbinson. My copy of No Surrender: An Ulster Childhood arrived. Goodreads has the author listed as Michael Murphy, Robert Harbinson. Harbinson had another pen name - Robin Bryans and GR also has an author listing for Robert Harbinson Bryans.

Barbara, younhave prompted me to look for a similar scheme over here to your Paperback Swap. It turns out that we have Read It Swap It, which I shall look into and looks promising.

The cost of mailing a book here is around $2.60 sent book rate (Media Mail). You can set up wish lists which is great. You move up the list til you are on top for the next copy of your wish. Right now I have a lot of less common titles listed but I have gotten quite a few this year that way. Also when a title comes up on GRI, I look there. Sometimes I get lucky as in the case with Dublin Noir (I was on a waiting list for only a few weeks) and finding Robert Harbinson.

On RISI there was a copy of Eureka Street and some Adrian McKintys that are new to me so it looks promising and with postage costing less than a cup of coffee it is certainly an attractive proposition. However I need to try and curb my book buying until a few more tomes on my shelves are read and until I can get to the Post Office myself as the engineer is rather overburdened just now. RISI will definitely come in useful :)

Yes, I have swapped over 300 books and I realize that if I keep swapping, that number doesn't go down. That is motivation to donate some to the library sale and to give some away. I am pleased when I read a book and then can get it out the door. As I've said before, there are books I hold on to - most of the Irish books (at least the ones I like).

It will certainly make me less reluctant to buy paperbacks if I know that they can be rehomed in exchange for something else that is good to read.

Papillon is fantastic. I read that 26 years ago :O

Seraphina What was the bookstore Fiona? Love the smell of used books

message 1236: by Seraphina (new)

Seraphina It's really good actually, I've just been very slow reading it. If you like mysteries and like trying to figure out who did it, then you will enjoy it.
Sounds like a great shop, not too many nice second hand bookshops around other than charity shops

Joanna Kelly (azeezee) | 16 comments As I intend to take part in the classic buddy reading challenges, I went out today and bought Charles DickensGreat Expectations.

Lovely to hear from you Fiona and good to hear that you and Declan had a worthwhile visit to a book shop. Diedre Madden is one of those authors that I must get around to reading.

Impressed with your progress, Seraphina :)

Fiona - I really liked Molly Fox's Birthday. Theresa - she is definitely a writer to have on your list.

Barbara (bdegar) | 4626 comments Remembered I didn't have any John Hewitt books when I noticed how long I'd had a couple on my Paperback Swap wish list. So I ordered a used copy of Collected Poems (new copies are over $110) and Selected Poems by Hewitt. Scarfed up a copy of The Ulster Renaissance: Poetry in Belfast 1962-1972 from ABE books for around $40 as new copies are $112-$140 and even the kindle book is $100. It seemed like a book my library has to have.

So I was wavering between several books in the Audible $6.95 sale when I came across The Round House and bought it as a no brainer. Several GRI members have read and liked it. This used up the last of the $20 Audible gave me to try to keep me from canceling my account..which I have now done.

message 1242: by Allan (new)

Allan It's funny how things that we must hage just occur to us, Barbara-the books sound like they'll be useful additions to your collection.

Sara, I listened to the audio version of 'The Round House' and was one of those who enjoyed it. Audible will be lamenting losing such a valuable customer!

message 1243: by Paul (new)

Paul Went on a small book spree today and bought The Wise Mans Fear by Rothfuss and The Three Stigmata of Palmer Eldritch by Philip K Dick. 8 euro all together so happy with that ☺

message 1244: by Seraphina (new)

Seraphina Ok that's it!! Putting myself on a book buying ban. My dog is going to kennels next week for a few days cause we're going to London so had to drop her for introductory morning. While waiting for her I managed to buy Jasper Jones and Hanns and Rudolf: The True Story of the German Jew Who Caught the Kommandant of Auschwitz
Not buying anymore until I get through at least half of what's on my shelves, crazy

message 1245: by [deleted user] (new)

Have a terrific time in London, Seraphina, such a wonderful city with so many places to see. Does your book buying ban extend to the UK book shops? No harm in window shopping of course ;)

message 1246: by Seraphina (new)

Seraphina it's my brothers 40th and he lives on outskirts of city near stanstead so as long as I don't go into central I might be safe?? Maybe.... Lol
