I sympathize with being worried about being caught on a flight or in an airport without something to read:)

I purchased several books the other night, none of which I believe (hope) were on my SS wish list.

I got
NOS4R2 by Joe Hill
The Swan Thieves by Elizabeth Kostova
The Pinhoe Egg by Dianna Wynne Jones
A Breath of Snow and Ashes by Diana Gabaldon
Leaving Time by Jodi Picoult
The Letter by Kathryn Hughes
Christmas Stories by Paulo Coelho

& for Christmas cheese I got Driving Home for Christmas by Emma Hannigan.

message 1006: by [deleted user] (new)

Blimey! We are a hopeless lot! This is so funny! To think that I left a copy of Easter Widows on the shelf in case it turned up in my Christmas stocking!

message 1007: by Paul (new)

Paul Whos to say your SS stuck to your list. The lists were only guides. Oh oh

message 1012: by Allan (last edited Dec 23, 2014 10:43AM) (new)

Allan Hmmm, I'm wondering, with all the chat above, whether or not I should recount the tale of my trip into Belfast this afternoon, where, after having picked up the item I was sent in for, I happened to be passing Easons, where my attention was drawn to a table of trade paperbacks close to the entrance which, instead of being priced at £12.99, were on sale for the bargain price of £2.99.

How could I potentially miss such bargains? For fear that I might, I felt it sensible that I purchase Red Sky in Morning and Mount Merrion with the change I had in my pocket.

Please be gentle with your admonishment!

message 1013: by Paul (new)

Paul And somewhere a SS has fully cracked and is currently emptying the drinks cabinet

message 1017: by Cathleen (new)

Cathleen | 2409 comments I've just acquired a book--but it was given to me by my friend while visiting. She finished a Janet Evanovich book, and asked if I had ever read it; I hadn't, so now I've acquired another book, but I don't think that really counts :)
I did, though, buy the Charles Dickens I had borrowed from the library. It was an audio download and as much as I enjoyed listening to whoever narrated the bio, I got near the end of the book, and it was bugging me that there's no easy way to go back (or at least I don't know how to do it with audio books) and "re read" passages or check the name of this person or that. So I bought the e-book. So much for being pleased with myself that I borrowed a book from the library, rather than purchasing it!

Sara, if you went to the book mill and that's all you bought---that shouldn't even really count as any purchase at all. That's the self-discipline of a saint. I have the Book Mill on my list of things "to do" when I get back home and before the new semester starts.

message 1020: by Kevin (new)

Kevin Forgot, We are Complete Beside Ourselves and a book I've never heard of, The Bully Pulpit by Doris Kearns Goodwin

message 1021: by Allan (new)

Allan Jeez, Kevin, you're fairly taking the pressure off me with that haul! I see you fancied Stoner so much you bought it twice! :)

Some great titles there-the Hans Fallada one is one I've had my eye on since I read the review earlier in the year.

The joys of working in a book shop!

H (hiisdaarkmaaterials) | 430 comments Mod
Oh Kevin please do let me know what you thought of Moriarty when you get around to it. I've been in two minds over whether to buy it or not!!

Is it awful that these lists of new purchases are only giving me new ideas...!

message 1023: by Kevin (new)

Kevin Some of them were damaged copies of books I already owned, like Stoner. I thought they might be useful to pass on to folks :) that's me done acquiring books until next year anyway... ;)

message 1024: by Kevin (new)

Kevin We got in 50 of the Bloodied Field yesterday after it was out for 3 days. 30/50 were reserved for customers already and the other 20 sold by the end of the day. I hid one for myself, as you do :)

message 1025: by Allan (new)

Allan That's a book that I must've missed coming out-looks interesting-have the reviews been good?

message 1026: by Kevin (new)

Kevin Really excellent reviews Allan. I have never known a history book to be so popular at Christmas. I will read it soon and let you all know!

message 1027: by Allan (new)

Allan I'll have to keep an eye out for the reprint-thanks for the info!

Kevin-re the books you get from work that are 'damaged'-what actually constitutes 'damaged'? Is it an issue with much stock? Just interested!

message 1028: by Barbara (new)

Barbara (bdegar) | 4626 comments Kevin - what a haul!
Allan- you are a bargain magnet. I have a friend who is tops at finding bargains, but she moved to Florida so I miss having those bargain adventures. £2.99 is an excellent price!

Because I have been causing GRI members such distress with my book buying - I should say was as Sara, Kevin and Allan have all outdone me - I went to two yarn stores today and spent over $175. I was heading to one when I got an email with a 25% off coupon for the second.

message 1029: by Paul (new)

Paul Wow Kevin. Big haul. Another SS has broke down in tears somewhere .

message 1030: by Paul (new)

Paul Heather, Trelawn read Moriarty very recently. She loved House of Silk and didnt think it was up to that level.

message 1031: by Kevin (new)

Kevin Damaged is often that a customer has dropped the book and maybe slightly buckled the spine or maybe creased or torn the cover. 9/10 it is tiny damage but just enough to stop it being pristine. So if you ever find yourself in my work, let loose and break things :)

message 1032: by H (new)

H (hiisdaarkmaaterials) | 430 comments Mod
Paul I heard that die hard Sherlock fans largely approved of House of Silk but not Moriarty. Good to know!

message 1033: by Paul (new)

Paul Well I loved House of Silk but I'm very wary of Moriarty now

message 1034: by Trelawn (new)

Trelawn That was largely my feeling Heather. Moriarty is not a bad book, it's just not a patch on House of Silk.

message 1035: by Seraphina (new)

Seraphina Besides my three ss gifts, I had 3 books on my kindle that I got today.
The lion, the witch and the wardrobe
Dissident gardens
Ten thousand saints
I am in reading heaven :)

message 1036: by [deleted user] (new)

Emma, I also got Stardust :)

Seraphina, enjoy your Kindle!

message 1037: by Seraphina (new)

So in addition to the book gifts from the SS Exchange, I got a couple books/bookish gifts from my relatives

Maggie the Mechanic which is the first collection of the graphic novel series Love and Rockets I've been reading. The ones I've been reading are the "New Stories" that started back in 2008. This collection goes back to the first days of the comic back in 1982 (incidentally the year I was born). I also got a yearly subscription to Lapham's Quarterly, a literary magazine. Finally, I got a small journal with a gorgeous cover that I might use to record my reactions to books as I read them.

Both gifts were on my Amazon Wishlist, but I'm quite happy these particular items were picked. I also got a few smaller items and gifts cards. My big gift was a 32" flat screen t.v., but I got that as an early gift prior to Thanksgiving. Allan was quite shocked when I told him that I got such a non-bookish gift.

In the giving department: My father seemed quite happy with receiving and my mother Rogues. My cousin thinks she'll like Maisie Dobbs, but I'll report back once I know for sure. She also likes the board book I got her 4 month old, Monica. Incidentally (and slightly off topic) the four month old is the cutest baby on the face of the planet, although I might be biased. I'll post a picture when I'm back in Maryland.

message 1039: by Trelawn (new)

Trelawn I did quite well in the book dept too. My mam bought me Emma by Alexander McCall Smith and two more from the Scotland Street series by the same author. Paul got me The Storied Life of AJ Fikry by Gabrielle Zevin, The Glass of Time by Michael Cox, a beautiful edition of Wilde's short stories. He also got me a really gorgeous 1867 edition of Great Expectations. It's got marble design covers and is such a beautiful book and in fabulous condition for being 147 years old.

message 1040: by Trelawn (new)

Trelawn I am looking forward to seeing what Emma is like after enjoying Northanger Abbey.

message 1041: by Paul (new)

Paul Well aside from my SS books I also got 4 wonderful books from Trelawn . She got me a first edition of Roald Dahls Going Solo. I have a pb edition already but I now have a matching first edition to Boy ☺. She also got me a first edition of The Bram Stoker Bedside Companion: 10 Stories by the Author of Dracula.
As well as the collectables she also bought me Kate Mosse The Taxidermist's Daughter and Ken Follett's Edge of Eternity.
My mother got me two history encyclopedias Events That Changed The World
and On This Day: The History of the World in 366 Days

Oh I would give my left pinkie finger for that first edition of Going Solo. That and Boy are childhood favourites.

I received a 50th anniversary edition of Lord of the Rings, it's quite beautiful and I'm chuffed my other half listens when I witter on about books! I also got a first edition of The Fall of Arthur also by Tolkien. Overwhelmed and very pleased.

message 1043: by Paul (new)

Paul Emma I've read all of Mosse's books so I look forward to this one. Shes a good writer and does atmospheric very well.
Heather. I'm well chuffed having the matching set . Like you they are two of my favourite childhood books and I would still consider Going Solo one of my favourites ☺

message 1044: by Allan (new)

Allan Aside from my annual 'Bedside Guardian' gift, my other half is sensible and doesn't even attempt to purchase books for me, but it's great to see so many people getting so many titles that they're chuffed with today. I have got a few Amazon vouchers though, so may sit down and purchase a few titles in the morning.

Seraphina, I loved both the Lethem and the Henderson novels-if you enjoy both, and want any other NYC based fiction recommendations, I might know someone who can give you them! :)

Both are great NYC books! Allan turned me onto Jonathan Leitham (sic).

Well now that Christmas is over and my birthday is many months away I thought why not get a few new books :) Ye have all been a bad influence on me!

Elephant Moon by John Sweeney
The Anne of Green Gables Collection
The Misremembered Man by Christina McKenna
Last Train to Istanbul by Ayse Kulin
The Street Philosopher by Matthew Plampin
Hideous Creatures by S. E. Lister
The Son by Philip Meyer
Talon by Julie Kagawa
Good Omens by Terry Pratchet and Neil Gaiman
Us by David Nicholls

Think I'm more than set for 2015!

message 1047: by Allan (new)

Allan Seeing as we've had a book buying moratorium for the month of December, I was well overdue a bit of a splurge on Amazon, so this morning I used £30 worth of vouchers to buy the following titles:

On the Brinks by Sam Millar

Young Skins by Colin Barrett

Here Are The Young Men by Rob Doyle

Iron Gustav: A Berlin Family Chronicle by Hans Fallada

Brits: The War Against The Ira by Peter Taylor

Given my SS gift, I also decided to return my audio copy of Constellation of Vital Phenomena that I hadn't listened to, and as that left me with two credits, I used them to buy two books from my wishlist:

Augustus by John Williams

Fourth of July Creek by Smith Henderson

I may well also go into town over the next couple of days to pick up copies of these books, which I saw the other day on sale in Bargain Books and now know I can't get cheaper online.

The Bloodiest Year 1972: British Soldiers in Northern Ireland in Their Own Words by Ken Wharton

The Falls: The People, the Community, the Memories by Vincent Dargan

The Belfast Blitz by Stephen Douds

I think, all in all, that these titles, along with the ones that I received at Christmas, may keep me going until my birthday at the end of February anyway! :)

I was really annoyed over the miniaturist Emma, I'd only gone and paid €14 for it in hardback last week and he is is for 99p!

Didn't take you long Allan!!

message 1050: by Kevin (new)

Kevin Happy to see you with Young Skins and Iron Gustav, Allan. Young Skins has some excellent short stories in it. I especially liked the one about "Arm".
