Recently bought (acquired) books!
I just love that Cathleen and now Sara are reading/have Claire Tomalin's biography of Dickens.
It was on the remainder shelf for just $7.98 and the sale got me another 20% off on top of that. It was like they were practically giving the book away Theresa!
Sara, I love the Maisie Dobbs series. It's a smart mystery and I love the post WWI setting. I think it's a great choice.
Sara wrote: "Well I too frequented the local bookstore sale, but I'm fairly confident that none of the books I bought are ones that people would have purchased for me.Like Barbara I got [book:Wayfaring Strang..."
Glad you made it to the sale, It must have been a madhouse.
Allan, I just found the perfect book for you-Novel Interiors: Living in Enchanted Rooms Inspired by Literature. It combines your love of books and painting. How can you go wrong?
Lol Susan-painting is a necessity rather than a joy for me, but thank you for the recommendation! :)
Theresa wrote: "I just love that Cathleen and now Sara are reading/have Claire Tomalin's biography of Dickens."Theresa, I've gotten to the section when Dickens formally separates from his wife. Tomalin paints him to be thin-skinned, self-righteous, and vindictive. I wonder if he gets over himself as time goes on.

It's a compelling read isn't it? Such double standards! Tomalin's story of Dickens and his mistress Nelly Terman was published in 1990 hence she doesn't feature much in CD's biography (2011). As Emma says you may well care add The Invisible Woman to your 2015 TBR shelf and it is about time I revisited it too.

I picked up Twelve Days of Winter: Crime at Christmas and Detroit: An American Autopsy at the Audible audiobooks sale. Paul feel free to freak out.
I received Dante's The Divine Comedy in today's post - it's the Barnes and Noble leather bound classics edition and it is unbelievably beautiful, from cover to illustrations. Just wonderful. It's distracting me from my study in all its beauty.

I cant help but feel Barbara is taunting me ☺I did make a purchase of my own but its a preorder of a january release , Firefight by Brabdon Sanderson. Its part of the Reckoners series. Probably be right up Gavins street as he lijes the Pittacus Lore Series
Barbara, you got a great deal on that 12 Days of Christmas. I looked it up on Amazon and the copies start at $40! Even the Kindle was high. I'm disappointed. It sounds like a fun book.
Barbara wrote: "I picked up Twelve Days of Winter: Crime at Christmas and Detroit: An American Autopsy at the Audible audiobooks sale. I also have the Autopsy of Detroit (as an e-book in my case) picked up this past summer before my trip there. Today I had some time to kill and went to my local comic shop and picked upMs. Marvel, Vol. 1: No Normal. I've read the first few pages, and it's quite good so far. I also plan to do some more graphic novel buying/pre-ordering on Amazon. I'm desperately trying to avoid buying anything from the Audible sale. If I fail you can all blame Allan.
I thought that was the club motto- blame Allan for overspending on books. He's really a book pusher dealing to book addicts.
Heather wrote: "Barbara the 12 days of winter sounds fun! Something a little different!"Well actually though it is Christmasy, it is the darkest side of the Scottish underworld. I'd say it is not one to put me in a Christmas mood. I think I will look for another cozy mystery or something without the violence:) Luckily it's short one.

Paul - just steeling myself for tongue lashings from my GRI friends. I will add that none of the books I've gotten are on my "Christmas" list.
Celebrating the finishing of exams...The Bloodied Field Which is suppose to be absolutely superb and is flying off the shelves at work.
The Ocean at the End of the Lane
The Mist
Stair na Gaeilge
Moab Is My Washpot
Batman: Whatever Happened to the Caped Crusader?
I do remember Kevin saying he wanted to try Neil Gaiman and if his SS saw the same they might have gone out and gotten the most recent book . its very possible.
I welcome all challengers, Heather and Paul :). This is as close to living on the edge as I can get these days. Paul, regarding Neil Gaiman I thought you would be happy that I was reading him further rather than putting doubt in my mind! For shame.
On a side note Ocean at the End of the Lane os a great book and I'd highly recommend trying the Graveyard book after .
See, that's much better Paul :) I will indeed. There are some lovely hardback versions of all his books which I intend on purchasing.
I have two copies of Ocean at the End of the Lane both hardbacked , One slipcased and signed . They really do lovely editions of his books. I've a few of the early ones in PB but a lot in HB now
Kevin have you read Gaiman's Neverwhere? I feel in love with him instantly through it.
I used to do Irish dance in school so I can kick fairly high ;)

I Loved Neverwhere. I have an Anthology at home with a spinoff short story called The Marquis ' New Coat. Have you watched the TV series
I haven't read it Heather but I definitely plan on getting around to all of his books eventually. His works are right up my street. You'll need more than set dancing to reach me Heather :)
Paul I'm afraid I'm in Kevin's boat - I've only read two of Gaiman's books although I own them all. I've realised I'm a serial buyer - not even reading the bloody things! Missed the series too and no sign of BBC repeating it.
I bought the series on play.com for 5 euro which was a bargain. I've read all his books so you've a fun time ahead.
Would anyone know how to add books to the Goodreads database, and if so, would they be able to add this one, that I picked up while doing some more grocery shopping?Inside Man: Loyalists of Long Kesh - The Untold Story https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/178073064...
Despite my embargo, I'm confident that my SS won't have bought me this one, given that I'd never heard of it myself.
I'll probably balance this one out with the Sam Millar memoir that I had in my hand yesterday in Waterstones-but will do so after Christmas!
On the Brinks https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/184717640...
Brilliant, Paul-thanks!Re the app issue, bizarrely, when I clicked on the book link from there, it came up as Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix! :-s
bought The Poisonwood Bible recently after it was recommended by a Khaleid Hosseini fan. anyone read?
Honestly, this thread should have been in hibernation since the SS round robins! LOL! New members excused, of course :)
I also bought some new books. I had to. I was at the Book Mill>
There I got:
Dinosaur Tales
The Prince of Mist
The Hungered One
Tales of Two Cities: The Best and Worst of Times In Today's New York
Cathleen can testify that for a trip to the Book Mill, this is actually quite restrained purchasing.
I was also entrapped by the airport bookstore into getting Hild. I swear I was only there to get a few magazines for my flight from New England back to Maryland. It's ok. I've been interested in Hild for awhile and didn't realize it was finally available in paperback
I promise that with Christmas in 2 days, this will be the last of them...or not if an audiobook or e-book strikes my fancy...but probably not.

Sara! You're a Mod! You should be leading us by example. LMAO :)
I'm fairly certain that my Secret Santas are safe though! It's ok right? As long as I didn't get any books that they got me.

Like Barbara I got Wayfaring Strangers: The Musical Voyage from Scotland and Ulster to Appalachia. I also picked up The Complete Cosmicomics having been a fan of Calvino's for years. Finally, I picked up Charles Dickens to complement my reading of a Christmas Carol. My reading of a Christmas Carol has also inspired me to read my copy of either David Copperfield, Great Expectations or both in 2015.
I also got a board book for my cousin Laura's baby, and Maisie Dobbs for Laura herself. I haven't read any Jacqueline Winspear, but I know several members of GRI have enjoyed her work. Laura isn't a big reader, but she does enjoy mysteries and like the main character is a nurse.
