Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19204 comments Time to play with the Goodreads functions, I say!

Go up to your Browse menu, and click on the link Lists as below:

This brings up "Listopia" which is a silly name and we shalln't mention it again. Head down to the Lists With Recent Activity. There should be four lists displayed there. This is where we are playing this month.

Your job this month is to read a book on one of these four lists. Depending on the size of your lists, this should give you about 396 books to choose from this month. So from my example, I decide I will read a book from "Best Books about Nineteenth Century History". I click on that list, and I choose to read the first book on that list, The Devil in the White City: Murder, Magic, and Madness at the Fair That Changed America

In order to complete this challenge, you need to do the following:

- Read a book that meets the criteria above in Sept.

- Tell us which list it was on and link it (so we can sticky beak if we are interested in the subject). I recommend bookmarking your list once you choose your book, as you may not be able to find it again.

- Tell us what you thought of the book, whether you thought it should have been on the list or not, and WHY to both of these questions.

Simple!

General Rules:
1. The book may be in any format - paperback, ebook, audiobook.
2. The book may be in any genre.
3. The book may NOT be combined with the Year Long Survey Says Challenge.
4. The book must be read between September 1 - 30, 2017 (based on your local time zone).
5. The challenge is for one book. You may read more books if you chose.
6. The book must be 175 pages or more determined by the issue you read. If reading an audiobook or ebook where page numbers aren't listed, page numbers will be determined by the issue that comes up first on a Goodreads search.

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments A whole new function I didn't know existed! I know Listopia but not recent activity.

message 3: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments LOL I had a quick look on my phone to see if I could find it, and the first list sounds so weird but has 589 books! It's called 'Alien & Earth woman romance/erotica'

message 4: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11260 comments Oh my, I have to check that list! I am so curious! :)

message 5: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19204 comments I never promised it would be pretty! lol

message 6: by Lanelle (new)

Lanelle | 4020 comments One of the four lists is perfect for me. It is Middle School Book List. I've read 7 of the first 100 books and 2 are on my TBR list.

Off to see which books look interesting.

message 7: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18549 comments So I'm guessing depending on when we look, we might all have 4 different lists come up.

This should be fun.

message 8: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59884 comments My lists are:

Our Favourite Indy Reads
Books That Make You Laugh
Books by POC Authors: List 1 (whatever POC stands for)
Romance where hero/heroine are athletes.

I suspect Books That Make You Laugh is where I'll find my book.

message 9: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19204 comments Sarah wrote: "So I'm guessing depending on when we look, we might all have 4 different lists come up."

Indeed. Hence the bookmarking suggestion.

But I am not convinced that the waiting for something better to come along strat will work on this one.

message 10: by Jayme, Moderator (last edited Aug 26, 2017 09:42AM) (new)

Jayme | 4519 comments It's going to be a very steamy September. My list choices are: Hilarious Love Stories, sports romance, Romance Books 2017, and Sports Romances. There are very few clothed men on the covers...
I'm going for the 1st book on Sports Romances because well why not.

I just refreshed my browser a few times and new ones came up but you're right. Doesn't necessarily work in our favour.

Janice - POC is people of color.
Great challenge Rusalka- one of my lists is Historical Fiction - great options, I'll have to figure out which one I'll and on.

message 13: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19204 comments Sorry, crossposted your comment, Janice. I see Lilisa has you sorted though with POC.

message 14: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19204 comments Lol glad you guys like it. It will either be boundary pushing, familiar, or anything in between. All are good!

message 15: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I got these 4:

- Goodreads picks for tournament of books 2017
- The "Can't wait" books of 2016 that are not part of a series
- The "Can't wait" books of 2017
- 10 Mayalayam must read before you die book

I'll go with the first or second. The third is too new, I don't think I own any books published this year. The fourth I have no idea what it is.. books from Malaysia? I can't even read the titles, let alone a whole book ;-)

message 16: by Sarah (last edited Aug 26, 2017 11:26AM) (new)

Sarah | 18549 comments I've taken a screenshot of my 4 about half an hour ago. Can't upload it now as I have poor internet signal but I'll stick it in later. I got:
- Brainy/Genius Romantic Heroines (i can do brainy and genius but not romance so this one is out)
- Dragon Books NOT ROMANCE (Could be good)
- 2017 Highly Anticipated Epic Fantasy (So excited by this one but then I looked at the list and most books are either still awaiting release or are later in a series I'm reading and I still have books to go before starting these)
- Best Fantasy Series, Trilogies, and Duologies (Now that's more like it although it doesn't have my favourite series on there for some reason)

Only problem with fantasy is the book might be 800 pages long. I only have 2 weeks of September in which to read it as I have friends staying the first 2 weeks so I won't get much if anything read.
I like at the lists better when I've got some more time.

Lol Peggy, I'm guessing it is Malayalam -- a language spoken in the state of Kerala in India. I'm going yo have to check out that list! :)

message 18: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments You're right Lilisa, misspelled it. Can you read that language?

message 19: by Annerlee (new)

Annerlee | 2871 comments This is such a good idea! Love it!
My lists are great too...

Best Books Ever
Best Middle Ages Books
Clean Short Stories
Fiction by Korean Authors and/or Containing Korean Characters

I dont often read short stories, but I'll have a browse. You never know. Korean is uncharted territory, so defi itely interesti g!

message 21: by Kristie, Moderator (last edited Aug 26, 2017 01:51PM) (new)

Kristie | 19137 comments My four were:

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

I will most likely go with the Best Detective/Mystery Series. Fortunately, it is a very long list and there are many on my TBR already, even some that I already own.

message 22: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59884 comments I should have figured that POC was persons of colour. My brain isn't working, obviously.

Just for sh**tz and giggles, I clicked on lists again, and this time I got:
Hair (12 books)
Top Fast-Paced Mysteries (which might be good)
2017 Highly Anticipated Epic Fantasy
Gay Romance Featuring Native American MC's

I'll keep my original 4.

message 23: by Peggy (last edited Aug 26, 2017 02:37PM) (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I own 4 books from the tournament 2017 list:
The Underground Railroad
His Bloody Project
The One-in-a-Million Boy
The Luminaries

The last one's too chunky so I'll read one of the others. Such a coincidence that I ordered the first two books last week!

message 24: by Lilisa (new)

Lilisa | 2770 comments Peggy wrote: "You're right Lilisa, misspelled it. Can you read that language?"

Haha, no Peggy. I was curious to see if any of them were translated into English - it would be fun to check one out but they don't appear to be.

message 25: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19204 comments ... I just realised I left out something from the challenge.
Lucky you guys, it's easier than I intended!

message 26: by Lori Z (new)

Lori Z | 2086 comments Very interesting challenge, should be fun!

Okay, so I gave this a shot and my four lists were:
Hottest Hockey Romances
Recommended Romances August 2017
Can't Wait Sci-Fi/Fantasy of 2018 (no help there)
Favorite Gay Couples

Hmmm, found one book that looked promising, but none on my tbr pile or any that I own. May give it another go at a later time and see what else pops up.

message 27: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments What did you leave out?

message 28: by Rusalka, Moderator (last edited Aug 26, 2017 11:57PM) (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19204 comments I was going to make it only the first page of the list, hence the reference to 396 books.

But as I forgot to mention it, whole lists are in play. I tend to only look at the first 100 books in the list anyway, assuming you are all similar.

message 29: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I've noticed with lists that the first one or two pages usually have books I read, own, or are on my wishlist. The further you go down the list, the more unknown they are.

message 30: by Ariane (last edited Aug 27, 2017 01:15AM) (new)

Ariane | 947 comments That's nice! I'va never paid attention to those kind of lists...
I got those 4:

- Teenagers... in space!
- Goodreads Choice Awards 2017
- Most Interesting Magic System
- Best Turkish Literature Books of 2012

I think I'll go with the magic systems...

message 31: by Almeta (last edited Sep 05, 2017 04:48PM) (new)

Almeta (menfrommarrs) | 11457 comments Here are the four that displayed for me and possible choices:

10 Malayalam Must read before you die book ~ Peggy, I got this category also. Choosing the first one,I DID read that it was translated into English, however I could not find it available to me here in the States. I'm skipping that!

2017 Crime Books You're Excited For! ~ NOW THIS list couldn't have been better chosen for me if I had asked! I have many of these marked to be read by me. I recently added #4 Final Girls and #8 The Breakdown. I am in the hold queue with the library for them, however I don't think that they will be released to my custody in time. I could, of course, choose among the multitude others but "Why be predictable?"

Awesome Historical Fiction ~ Again, another well loved category, Doomsday Book and Boy's Life immediately popped out as marked on that list.

heroine disguised as a man ~ Have a few choices already marked on this list also...BUT guess what was an obvious choice? (Thank you Janice!) Bloody Jack

That's a good selection there.

Trudy (trudyan) | 1779 comments My lists and possible books from my TBR:

Best Books on Rock and Roll

Medicine and Literature - A Short History of Nearly Everything, Musicophilia: Tales of Music and the Brain, Mistress of the Art of Death

YA Novels of 2017

London Calling -Slammerkin, Sense and Sensibility, The Night Watch

I've had Musicophilia: Tales of Music and the Brain on my list since 2014, I think that would be an interesting read. So, although it does not fit this challenge for me, I have moved it near the top of my list to be read soon!

Phew! So glad you left that out. Only one list had a book on my TBR on the first page. I allowed four pages... and found Ready Player One.

It has been on my shelf awhile too. I'm leaning towards it for the challenge, but my choices are so varied, I think I will wait until September and see what I am in the mood to read.

Margo | 11628 comments This should be fun! These are my lists:

edit: can't get this screen shot to work. The lists are
- Best Gothic Books Of All Time
- Best Funny Paranormal Romances
- Realm Makers Books
- 2017 Highly Anticipated Epic Fantasy

message 42: by Debra (last edited Aug 27, 2017 09:33AM) (new)

Debra (debra_t) | 6542 comments Great fun!

My lists are:
Biker or MC romance & erotica - First Books in Series or Serial
Best Feminist Books
Chautauqua Literary and Scientific Circle
Books about the rich, jet-set, leisure class

Interesting mix!

I've decided on The Bell Jar from Best Feminist Books. Here's the Listopia link:

message 43: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18549 comments Wow there are some intetesting lists out there.
I agree, i'm having fun just reading what people have come up with.

message 44: by Casceil (new)

Casceil | 2728 comments I've checked back several times, and the lists I keep hitting are 75% romance. Other people are getting lists that sound interesting. I'm getting things like "Biker or MC romance & erotica" or "Brainy/Genius Romantic Heroines". I didn't write down all the categories that came up the first time, because I wasn't interested in reading a romance or "Chick Lit," but I did bookmark "Brainy/Genius" because it was the first thing that came up, and if I'm going to read a romance I prefer that the heroine be smart. And I definitely prefer that it be about a male/female relationship rather than a M/M one. So I guess I will be reading One Good Earl Deserves a Lover.

message 45: by Casceil (new)

Casceil | 2728 comments So, just for grins, I checked back one more time. This time I got:

1001 Books You Must Read Before You Die
Witty, Cute & Sexy M/F Adult Contemporary Romance
Chicklit 2017
Brainy/Genius Romantic Heroines

Now that is a list I could work with. Only fifty percent Romance, plus Chicklit, plus some real novels. I know I'm supposed to use the first list, and not go shopping, and "Brainy/Genius Romantic Heroines" came up on both lists, so I will go with it, but curse my luck.

message 46: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I've also checked several times, just to learn about the strange lists in there. I also got lots of romance and usually also a list of books in a indecipherable language. I'm glad I wrote down my lists here when I got them, at least some of those I can work with!

message 47: by Lori Z (last edited Aug 27, 2017 11:41AM) (new)

Lori Z | 2086 comments My second try turned out a little better. Although again I only got 3 viable lists, cause the fourth one was another list for 2018 books.
The 4 lists were:
Books with heroes/heroines who are assassins
Most anticipated Christian fiction 2018
YA realistic fiction
Political thrillers

I think I'll probably go with Between Shades of Gray which was on the YA Realistic Fiction list and is on my tbr pile. Although I might go with something from the heroes who are assassins list, there were some interesting choices on there.

Oh, I guess I should ask, can we go with a different set of lists or can we only choose from the original 4 that we get?

message 48: by Casceil (new)

Casceil | 2728 comments In my various attempts I have also gotten books in foreign languages--probably Russian, but that is a guess and I have either gotten two of those or gotten the same one twice. Also some lists of young adult books.

message 49: by Margo (last edited Aug 27, 2017 12:15PM) (new)

Margo | 11628 comments These titles are on my shelves:

From Best Gothic Books Of All Time:
The Forgotten Garden, The Thirteenth Tale, My Cousin Rachel, Frankenstein

2017 Highly Anticipated Epic Fantasy
the age of Myth, The Warded Man, Oathbringer

The other 2lists don't do much for me.

message 50: by Casceil (new)

Casceil | 2728 comments I have The Forgotten Garden on my Kindle, and I've been looking for a good time to read it. But the Best Gothic Books list has not come up for me. Some of us read My Cousin Rachel awhile back. I think it was a buddy read, and there should be a thread out there. It was a good book.
