This part was pretty cheesy. I mean come on, he's one of the aliens that took your family and your home. And all you could think about was his chocolaty warm eyes? Finished (view spoiler)[ It was good. I liked it but I didn't find it anything special. The writing was exceptional though. Very easy to read and short chapters. Definitely a page turner. It started out strong with the 4 waves and how everyone was slowly dealing with survival. But I found the plot more and more typical. With your typical tropes of girl meets alien but does not know he's an alien. Later he tells her that he changed his views of humans because of her and blah blah blah. I was more intrigued at this point by Ben's POV because we actually learn about the the aliens and the big 5th wave. Overall, I liked it but I didn't love it. (hide spoiler)]

This might begin with a case of telling not showing, as she relays all that has befallen the earth, but the lyrical voice used to do so makes me immediately believe in this alien invasion and post-apocalyptic version of the world. I still like Cassie's perspectives but I think already being aware that Evan is one of the others takes away something from his scenes. I found that the horrors of what the 'others' are inflicting on these children is really driven home and the multitude of perspectives allows us to feel for every individual involved. Ringer and Evan were the two characters who I had least connection with but that has altered now and I love this cast, entirely and evenly. (hide spoiler)]

Finished- (view spoiler)[ I really hope Evan Walker survives. I really like his role in the plot and I liked how hard Cassie fought herself about liking him and trusting him. Ben's character is still kind of an oblivious jock. I don't want to say "dumb" because he isn't that, but he seriously had no idea Cassie sat behind him in class for a year? And here he is still aligning himself romantically with the beautiful but cold, Ringer. Even the apocalypse hasn't shaken him out of his habits. I hope he grows in book 2. (hide spoiler)]

Finished - Another Wow! This series is so messed up and so good! (view spoiler)[ I don't know what to think about the idea that there are no aliens inside these humans. Ringer is right, if there isn't a reason for Vosh to be the way he is, it means humans have done this to themselves. It's freaky!!! It also doesn't explain the sensation that Cassie got from Evan "opening up" to her. So maybe Vosh was just messing with Ringer.

Speaking of, is Ringer really going to start trusting Razor? IDK about that. And will someone get Ben some damn antibiotics? Surely there are some left in some hospital somewhere. He's going to need to get back to fighting form for when Grace goes nuclear on their group - you know she isn't dead. (hide spoiler)]

Ch 76 - (view spoiler)[ I'm wondering why they didn't wait to blow themselves out of the cave. Surely, they had enough air and supplies to wait until they think the soldiers have moved on? I guess the author wants to force the confrontation. (hide spoiler)]
Finished - (view spoiler)[ Well that was a bit of a depressing end. I mean, I guess the near destruction of our species isn't supposed to be cheerful, but still. Poor Evan lived, but Cassie didn't....and she managed to download all of humanity to her brain, but subsequently blew herself up and lost all that knowledge. Then there is Ringer and Ben and this new little baby. Does the baby have the 12th system? Is anyone going to try to start over or are they all just going to continue focusing on surviving only? I feel like the author made all these points about human nature and breaking it down and then these kids fighting for something better, only to leave them alone and still mistrusting, with no plan to make it better. Even Evan is going off to kill any survivors. It's just depressing and lonesome. (hide spoiler)]

I still liked the book/series and thought it was a very interesting take on an alien apocalypse. What did you think about it?

I'm up to chapter 16 and I'm loving it so far. I feel like this is a high pace read.
What is written about (view spoiler)[the different waves, the virusses,...feels actual and real. It gives me the creeps. I wonder what crucifix - soldiers are, like the one Cassie shot in the shop. Are they a sort of special soldiers? I've seen the movie a couple of times, but the book feels better. I don't have a problem with the flashbacks switching with the present. (hide spoiler)]

Chapter 16 - 18:
(view spoiler)[I almost cried at little Sammy because he's so brave and giving his teddybear to Cassie for protection...Cassie's dad Sullivan, let his daughter promise to never let Sammy go and to keep always an eye on him, but he broke it and send Sammy away with the busses. I don't know what's safer: letting him stay with his sister or sending him off...I couldn't do it. I don't trust Hutchfield. The Black Hawk saw the survivers and sent soldiers, but why only the kids, only the younger ones? (hide spoiler)]

Chapter 20 - 24:
(view spoiler)[The soldiers killed all the adults, but why and why do they need the kids? Cassie has a really good fighting spirit. Okay, she thinks much of the time that this is the end of the world and that she is the last of human kind, we know already, but still...I think I wouldn't be that strong. I liked the last sentences of this chapter. I'm reading the Dutch translation, but it goes a bit like this: 'If I'm the last, then I'm mankind. If this is the last war of mankind, then I'm the battlefield.' (hide spoiler)]

Chapter 25 - 28:
(view spoiler)[The second part is told by a nameless boy, age 17, who has what is called the Red Disease. He's so far gone that he's about to die, but then get 'saved' in the Tent Camp. I guess that the soldiers killed most of the people that were in that camp, but by some medicines the boy gets cured. Only thing is, he has now a chip implanted in his neck. That can't be good...There is also the discovery that the aliens have infiltrated in the humans, like the prologue about the invasion in 1995. Now the infiltrants have infiltrated the army. (view spoiler)[ Yah, I’m liking this so far too! I think crucifix soldier is just what she calls that guy because he was holding a crucifix, not because he was anything special. I don’t know though. This feels better than the movie for me too, we’re getting so much more detail. Gotta say that I prefer the flashbacks more than the present right now, but I can see that changing (hide spoiler)]

(view spoiler)[I'm really getting annoyed with Cassie and Evan! The relation between them is so weird and I think it needed so much attention. Several chapters ago, we've read that Evan is an Other, but it took until now to know the full story and still, it was too extended. In one of the chapters, there was the explenation of the extermination camps and I didn't like that I made the link to Auschwitz. It was a bit weird to think if that in this book. I knew that Reznic wasn't up to no good, but some things in the book are so difficult explained. I needed to read some parts again. (hide spoiler)]

Finished: (view spoiler)[ I saw the movie a couple of times, but didn't remember much of it. I've never read the book before, but it was a bit dissapointing to me.
There were bits in the story that really dragged along and that could've been shorter, like the revelation about Evan, the relationship between Evan and Cassie. that sort of things.
The idea of aliens coming and hitting in 5 waves is really interesting and has a lot of point of views where you can do much with it, but the romance and Cassie being a bit to much of a bad ass ruined it a bit for me.
But, it was good enough to want to read the next book. (hide spoiler)]
