Agnieszka (agnieszka7) | 616 comments Update:

Since my original picks were mostly too heavy for me I changed a little bit:

EN (picked 2/5 in msg. 385) I replaced with Endlich ohne Zucker! Der einfache Weg=Good Sugar Bad Sugar: Eat Yourself Free from Sugar and Carb Addiction by Allen Carr & John Dicey 2* 2/23 - interesting and enlighting content though very repetitive and the narrator was just awful.
SA (picked 2/27 in msg. 390) I replaced with Hot Sauce & A Hot Sauce Halloween by Tabatha Kiss 4* (both) 3/26
WH (picked 1/18 in msg. 370) I replaced with When Darkness Falls by Jennifer Youngblood & Sandra Poole 3* 2/28

PA (picked 2/8 in msg. 388) I'll give now a chance to Pasta Pinot & Murder
MR (picked 1/18 in msg. 370) my original pick looks now even more perfect (Who Murdered Mr. Malone?) - next in line
New pick today: RE - I'll re-read Reel of Fortune because it's so fun

New pairs: ER & FR

Agnieszka (agnieszka7) | 616 comments I finished my MR book (picked 1/18 in msg. 370) Who Murdered Mr. Malone? and the best I can tell about it is 1) it's off my shelf & 2) finally found a book with senior mc for another challenge

Here's my review copy:
This didn't work for me. It's a chick-lit/cozy-mystry blend with a bored senior main character who has more luck than skill and lets the law enforcement look inept (which I really hate, because let's face it they usually do a great job).
I'm going to give this series another chance because I already have the next one on my Kindle and really hope it gets better but don't have any expectation at this point.

Since Jennifer was so kind to pick A Frosty Mug of Murder for the Eye of the Beholder challenge I'll use it for this one as well and grab FR now *grins*

New pairs: ER & WI

I have a folder on my Kindle called "sorry I bought" for seconds in series where the first turned out to be a dud. I wish you better luck with yours!

I'll take WI with Witch Is Why The Moon Disappeared (A Witch P.I. Mystery #17) by Adele Abbott .

I learned that lesson the hard way too. Now, the only time I pick up a book beyond #1 in a series is if it's free. That leaves me with some odd combinations -- book #1, #5, #6 and #8, for example -- but if I liked #1 enough to continue the series, I'll think about buying book #2 :)

It's the same with me. Luckily #2 in the Garden Girls series was a freebie so the worst that can happe I loose some time I could use for a better book.

I almost always find that kind of book disappointing, usually because so much of it turns out to be obvious or stuff I already do. I wind up feeling the same way I do when I read things like "the average person can save him/herself from eating up to 35 lbs (yes, that was the actual figure) of sugar a year by giving up these five food groups: sugared sodas, sugared fruit drinks, ice cream, candy, and pastries/baked goods/sugared breakfast cereals." And I was like, ok, but i already don't eat those so what am *I* supposed to do now to get this weight off???

Agnieszka (agnieszka7) | 616 comments I finished yesterday my RE book Reel of Fortune (re-read) and enjoyed it again. It's not the greateds in series but still very enjoyable and fun which was most important for me right now.

I abandoned my FR book A Frosty Mug of Murder from message #405 and will read Frame 232 instead - when I'm in the mood for some conspiracy again.

I'm almost current on this challenge for the very first time: I'm only left with PA (see msg. 403) Pasta Pinot & Murder but still pick a 2nd PA thought I'm not sure yet which book I'll read for it. My book ideas here are (ordered by probabiltiy I'll read it): That Bear Ate My Pants!, The Secret of Pembrooke Park, The Lost Art of Intercession: Restoring the Power and Passion of the Watch of the Lord (in subtitle), Shadows of the Past, Passport through Darkness: A True Story of Danger and Second Chances, Paralyzed Dreams & Panic

New Pairs: ER & GO

You have plenty to choose from! I picked "AV" recently and 30 minutes later when I still hadn't found a single book it dawned on me to see if "avenue" was in any of my titles. If I hadn't had that random thought, I'd probably still be looking.

message 420: by Barb (new)

Barb | 1868 comments Like most everyone else, the library isn't a resource right now, I have to go with the books I own in print, already have on my Kindle, or can access via Overdrive or Hoopla.

That said, I can take Agnieszka's "GO" combo with Paris Is Always a Good Idea, by Jenn McKinlay. Not sure when I'll actually read it, as I have several other ARCs that I need to read first, but I'll get to it soon-ish :)

NEXT PAIRS : ER and LI

AV is a really different pair and I'm glad I missed it *grins* I checked my more or less planned books for ER first and had only one (from library before they closed, this weekened they announced they'll open again in two weeks if the government's plans won't change *yuppieh*) though I'm not sure I'll be able to finish it (one of those hype-books) and ER search on my Kindle gave way too many titles (most of them not having any words starting with these letters) so I got so overwhelmed and I checked PA instead and got the listed books (and written all of them down so I don't have to re-check the list when I'll tackle this pair) plus two I more I either read or is one of those I got for one of those really, really difficult chalenge options but hope I'll never need it since it's a genre I hate - but it was free :-)

I just checked my Kindle for words with AV and got 7 books (but five as many results as PA). The last time I struggled to find a book for AD I grabbed my dictionary and looked up words starting with AD and went from there, until I came over adventure, addiction was an option with many books but nothing I liked between them.

Ooooh, I'm jealous! There's no indication of when our libraries here might re-open, which makes me think it's going to be at least another month. Yesterday, our governor extended the stay-at-home order until May 8, but said he's trying to work out a plan for a "soft" re-opening of the state.

Our library director is a member of my F2F book group. When the group met last week, we asked if she had any idea when the library might be able to re-open, and she just shook her head and said "No idea at all." That's not a good sign *sigh*

I like that sort of thing -- where the setting and outside influences are restricted somehow and despite that the author has to keep it interesting. Good measure of a writer's skills. One of my favorite episodes of Family Guy is like that -- Brian and Stewie get locked in a bank vault for an entire weekend.

I read my BO book and it was ok. This series is mostly very short (less than 100 pages) and pretty fun though most of them are more of a chick-lit (partially with a sprinkle of mystery) than cozy-mystery. I still enjoyed many of them as a light distraction.
