Dark Tower Series Group Read
I have been wanting to re-read the entire series. Are you going to have a sort of reading schedule for each book or threads set up in advance for each book?Just set a date to start and I will be there!
I've actually already started my own re-read and have gotten into the second book, but would be more than happy to slow it down to wait for the rest of them when the group read gets to the others.
Maybe one book per month. That gives slow readers or lack of time readers enough time to read the book and participate in discussions. That also gives people who read many books per month time to still read other books and do groups reads etc.
I agree Nancy. I think one book per month will be perfect. That makes the schedule simple and easy to remember. People can fall behind and catch up or go a bit ahead and know when the next book can be discussed. Since this month is already half over and people might not catch onto this for a bit, I say we shoot for completing The Gunslinger by the end of September.
Ok everyone, so as it stands, schedule is:COMPLETE BY:
The Gunslinger ---- October 1st
The Drawing of the Three ---- November 1st
The Waste Lands ---- December 1st
Wizard and Glass ---- January 1st
Here we have a decision. There is a side book King wrote that is considered DT 4.5, but isn't absolutely necessary to the series. When we get closer, we can decide if we want to and continue the schedule from there. Thanks for the interest guys!
I'd love to join in too. It'll be a re-read for me. I'm hoping to read tie-ins as well this time around, so one DT book per month would be ideal.
1st time reader to the series but I do have Gunslinger already at home. I'll start reading it - from what I remember its a short book.Right now I'm reading the extended version of the The Stand. ;)
Are you going to use this thread for the buddy read? If so, I suggest editing your first post and insert the reading schedule there so it is easy to find.Otherwise I suggest each book have its own thread with the reading dates as part of the thread title.

I bought The Wind Through the Keyhole several yrs ago and haven't read it it. I plan on reading it after book 4. I've been waiting for a re-read if the series to get this book read.
Kole, you are gathering steam with this group read the schedule sounds good to me. I think adding Wind through the Keyhole in between wizards and glass and wolves of Calla is the right decision.
How different is the revised? I heard it just had one small addition, in which case, I'll prob do the revised. Seems to be the easiest to get ahold of

Looks good, I'll give it a go.
Awesome Kole! I'm in! I'm technically doing a re-read--however--it's been more than 8 yrs & I have changed so much since then, it's going to feel like a first run for a while I imagine. I'm doing half book half audio. But even audio marks chapters. I love the idea of this group read being something I can enjoy, rather than a race. Of course I make time for reading between the 40hr work week & the other things I do in life so I can't get through half of a book everyday. Sadly, there are times where a day escapes me & I get zero fun time/leisure time. (And I don't even have kids! Crazy!) So I'm loving this idea & I feel that it's very do-able!I'm ready!!
Thanks Kole :D
Hello from Malaysia 😊. Am currently reading Gunslinger. A little slow off the mark for me coz i am not used to reading fantasy genre. But i will soldier on!

That's so cool - I'm currently reading through the series for the first time. I'm just nearing the end of The Waste Lands, so will put Wizard and Glass on ice for a few months.

Goodreads also offers links to good deals on Amazon, I think. Might be worth checking out to find a used copy!
For the "Complete By" date, will the discussion happen in the month before with the idea that everyone will be finished and able to participate by the complete by date or will the discussion happen immediately after the complete by date? For example, will the discussion for The Gunslinger happen in September and conclude by October 1 or will it begin on October 1?
Kerry wrote: "For the "Complete By" date, will the discussion happen in the month before with the idea that everyone will be finished and able to participate by the complete by date or will the discussion happen..."Usually everyone discusses as they go, hiding spoilers as possible. Discussions can be revisited years later, so they really never end.

A theme that certainly fits this particular buddy read ;)

I agree trying to keep us from talking is near impossible as we are all so passionate about the subject. We want to share and grieve as necessary when it happens not weeks later.
If we all label at the top of our posts what we're about to comment about, people can ignore comments when necessary. But everyone should at least try and talk only about the book assigned for that month

Yes, I went to the used book store last weekend actually. I walked away with a bunch of King books, but they didn't have The Gunslinger. :( I'll try to find though.
I've set y'all up a folder and placed this thread there. I also started a thread for The Gunslinger: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...
Mayhap this will help

Well said Chris (lol)!
Hi everyone. .Im reading the series for the first time. I'm already halfway into Wizard and Glass..Im trying to get out of a reading slump at the moment. .and have been putting off reading the book for over two weeks now :( I'll continue reading it again this week though
In post #40, Chris posted the link for the discussion thread for the first book here:https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...
Don't forget to head over there to talk about The Gunslinger.
I was really disappointed after reading the first book. I really felt like there was a lot of unnecessary stuff, but I am hoping that the unimportant instances come up later in the series. I also really didn't click with the main character (I won't say for spoiler sake). I am willing to give the second book a try, but can someone tell me if I am wasting my time and it just continues like this?

@Chrys You are not alone. The Gunslinger is one of the worst books I have read from a big name author. This is not hyperbole, I don't just assign worst book tag to anything I don't like. It is absolutely that bad.I went up to book four, the series improves, but it never got good enough to justify the hype it gets. Try the second book, it was the best of the bunch, if you don't like that give up.
P.S. I could not quote your comment & reply directly to it as is the courtesy on GR cause I am on the app and the app is very restrictive in its features.

The rest of the schedule is tentative, based on whether or not we read the side book, DT 4.5: The Wind through the Keyhole.
(First Post)
Hey guys! I've talked to a couple people and seen interest in a long term Dark Tower Series group read. One where we go through the whole series book by book. The group will be designed around a slower pace allowing anyone to take part, including people whose schedules make it hard to finish a book every week. The schedule is tentative, so whenever people want to start on The Gunslinger, we can start setting projective dates for the completion of each book.
First time readers(like myself) and re-readers are both welcome, but make sure to label each post with where you are in the current book if you plan to write spoilers. Also try not to discuss books too far ahead of schedule so that everyone can enjoy the series at their own pace.
I hope this group thread gets some interest. Let me know if you guys have any ideas or suggestions!
