Who wants to cast The Masqueraders?

He certainly has the height & acting talent.

Any era of actor is fine, especially the size of some of the male characters will make it quite challenging

Just to be clear, it wasn't may idea. Someone in a group I was in suggested it, and I agreed.

Remember Alan Ladd? He was quite short, but you wouldn't have realized it from his films. I once heard that the sets were actually built down for him. Then there was Rock Hudson, whose co-stars were said to have to stand on a box so that he wouldn't tower over them. (On this last subject, has anyone else seen The Mirror Cracked--the film in which longtime supporting actress Angela Lansbury co-starred with Rock Hudson, Elizabeth Taylor, Kim Novak, and Tony Curtis, and had top billing? If you have, you may remember the scene in which Hudson and Curtis are arguing on the stairs and Hudson is towering over Curtis--and then the camera backs off and we see that Curtis is actually standing a step higher!)

Not Sir Anthony - but he'd make a wonderful Old Gentleman!

I'm not much of a film-goer but I'm good at finding old portraits so I did some 18th century casting for Kate and Peter Merriot here:

Oh, Stephen Fry would be *perfect* for Sir Anthony! Funny, but he could also be quite imposing in a temper.
And for Robin, I found myself thinking again...it would be a stretch, but in a blond wig I think Zachary Levi could do it. He's a terrifically talented comic actor, he's got great physical chops, and he's cute enough to make a quite pretty girl!

Gosh - isn't it amazing we can have such widely divergent opinions here? - I thought Gwyneth Paltrow and Renee Zellweger really did an excellent job on their accents. I was pleasantly surprised by both of them.

I like Johnny Depp for the old gentleman! The confidence and elan of Jack Sparrow but with a better wardrobe.
For Prudence, I think Lucy Lawless would be an interesting choice. Like Prudence, she is perhaps not classically beautiful but certainly striking and handsome.
I like Orlando Bloom for Robin, and Emma Watson for Letty.

I thought Zellweger's accent was wonderful. I can't remember Paltrow's - so that's a good sign.

and Emma Watson for Letty. ..."

I think Emma Watson looks too intelligent for Letty! ;)

Ooh, Lucy Lawless would make an awesome Prudence!

Carol, that's why I *liked* her for Letty - I think she might make her seem a little less witless!

As for short actors, apparently John Wayne was only about 5'6", so all the sets were very short.

Yes I forced my kids to watch the Redford version of The Great Gatsby with me (they will forgive me one day!) There is one shot where they get the proportions wrong & Sam Shepherd (Nick) is clearly towering over Redford.

ETA Well, of course, I said "no one had mentioned Johnny Depp for Robin", only to look again and see that Carolm had, of course! I blame my allergies making my eyes all puffy, so I can't read! Yeah, that's it...
A warning - likely to be open spoilers here, so read at your own risk!

MaryC has already given the inspired suggestions of Vanessa Redgrave for Prue & David Hemmings for Robin.
I liked the idea of Orlando Bloom for Robin (maybe not the greatest actor, but so good at swordplay) but he is just too tall!
I thought Johnny Depp for The Old Gentleman. I don't believe the height IMDb has (5ft 10) I think he is probably 5ft 8 tops, which would be about right. & he can do accents!
I like the idea of Carey Mulligan around the time of Pride & Prejudice for Letty. She is 5ft 7 though & that might make her too tall.
Any other ideas?
