Carol She's So Novel꧁꧂ & have I spelt cast right? :D

A warning - likely to be open spoilers here, so read at your own risk!

Any era of actor is fine, especially the size of some of the male characters will make it quite challenging

MaryC has already given the inspired suggestions of Vanessa Redgrave for Prue & David Hemmings for Robin.

I liked the idea of Orlando Bloom for Robin (maybe not the greatest actor, but so good at swordplay) but he is just too tall!

I thought Johnny Depp for The Old Gentleman. I don't believe the height IMDb has (5ft 10) I think he is probably 5ft 8 tops, which would be about right. & he can do accents!

I like the idea of Carey Mulligan around the time of Pride & Prejudice for Letty. She is 5ft 7 though & that might make her too tall.

Any other ideas?

Abigail Bok (regency_reader) I’d put in a vote for Rupert Everett for Sir Anthony, though he’d have to pad himself out a bit to be sufficiently muscular. He has the sleepy eyes and the languid style down pat.

He certainly has the height & acting talent.

Just to be clear, it wasn't may idea. Someone in a group I was in suggested it, and I agreed.

Remember Alan Ladd? He was quite short, but you wouldn't have realized it from his films. I once heard that the sets were actually built down for him. Then there was Rock Hudson, whose co-stars were said to have to stand on a box so that he wouldn't tower over them. (On this last subject, has anyone else seen The Mirror Cracked--the film in which longtime supporting actress Angela Lansbury co-starred with Rock Hudson, Elizabeth Taylor, Kim Novak, and Tony Curtis, and had top billing? If you have, you may remember the scene in which Hudson and Curtis are arguing on the stairs and Hudson is towering over Curtis--and then the camera backs off and we see that Curtis is actually standing a step higher!)

Carol She's So Novel꧁꧂ Off topic, but we have a soap over here called Shortland St & the cast is (or was I haven't watched for a few years) & the cast is tiny. Anyone 5ft 9 looks over 6 feet!

message 7: by Abigail (new)

Abigail Bok (regency_reader) Robert Redford is a munchkin, too.

Belinda | 220 comments I vote for Alan Rick man for sir anthony

message 9: by Kim (new)

Kim Kaso | 511 comments I read somewhere that the standard Hollywood male type tends to be in the range of 5'7", + or - a couple of inches. Jeff Goldblum, for example, is 6'4"+ & towers over many co-stars. There is something about the confirmation of features that tends to come in the shorter height range. I married a 6'4+ guy, and all my kids are close to 6'. At 5'2", I am the flowering bush among the Sequoias. Also, they were all big babies, the biggest was 10 1/2 lbs...& were all long. I felt like my stomach preceded me into every room in the later months. It is getting crazy in Hollywood as so many of the women are towering over their co-stars, Charlize Theron looks like she could snap James McAvoy in half in Atomic Blonde.

Not Sir Anthony - but he'd make a wonderful Old Gentleman!

message 11: by Kim (new)

Kim Kaso | 511 comments I miss Alan Rickman. ;-(

message 12: by Hana (new)

Hana | 652 comments What fun! I could definitely see Johnny Depp as the Old Gentleman. I have to look all the others up on IMDb :D

I'm not much of a film-goer but I'm good at finding old portraits so I did some 18th century casting for Kate and Peter Merriot here:

Elliot Jackson | 275 comments Ooh, this should be fun. I'd call for 80s-era Kelly McGillis as Prudence, Master and Commander-era Russell Crowe for Sir Anthony (think I've already mentioned this choice on another thread). How about Alan Rickman for Markham? SInce he was such a combination of suavity and menace as a villain! - a young Emma Watson or Natalie Portman as Letty Grayson, and for Robin...h'mm...I think I'd second Orlando Bloom. And Johhny Depp as The Old Gentleman would be hilarious, although I could see Simon Callow in that role, too. Whee!

message 14: by Elliot (new)

Elliot Jackson | 275 comments ooh, it just occurred to me that Jennifer Lawrence might make a smokin' hot Prudence, as well. I could totally see her kicking ass with swordstick in hand!

message 15: by MaryC (new)

MaryC Clawsey | 485 comments Can we do fantasy casting? Actors now too old for the roles, or even deceased? What about Dudley Moore as Robin?

message 16: by Belinda (new)

Belinda | 220 comments Oh yes Dudley would be hilarious

message 17: by Belinda (new)

Belinda | 220 comments Geoffrey rush for the old gentleman.

message 18: by Belinda (new)

Belinda | 220 comments Yes! Jennifer Lawrence for prudence! She is very tall. Although I'm not a fan of Americans doing English accents after Renee zellwenger butchered it along with Gwyneth Paltrow and Natalie Portman.

message 19: by Jacquie (new)

Jacquie Scuitto | 261 comments Somehow I keep seeing Stephen Fry as Tony.

message 20: by Belinda (new)

Belinda | 220 comments Oh yes. He certainly has the half shut eyes!

message 21: by Elliot (new)

Elliot Jackson | 275 comments Belinda wrote: "Geoffrey rush for the old gentleman." I was thinking Geoffrey Rush for Barham, actually - he and alan Rickman would be such a great pair of villains!

Oh, Stephen Fry would be *perfect* for Sir Anthony! Funny, but he could also be quite imposing in a temper.

And for Robin, I found myself thinking again...it would be a stretch, but in a blond wig I think Zachary Levi could do it. He's a terrifically talented comic actor, he's got great physical chops, and he's cute enough to make a quite pretty girl!

message 22: by Louise Sparrow (new)

Louise Sparrow (louisex) | 460 comments I was thinking Ray Quinn would make a good Robin, he's an actor and a dancer so he has the grace and the strength for both aspects of the character.

Gosh - isn't it amazing we can have such widely divergent opinions here? - I thought Gwyneth Paltrow and Renee Zellweger really did an excellent job on their accents. I was pleasantly surprised by both of them.

message 24: by Elza (new)

Elza (emr1) | 296 comments My first thought for Sir Anthony was Brad Garrett. He's a big guy with that sleepy look, and I love his voice.

I like Johnny Depp for the old gentleman! The confidence and elan of Jack Sparrow but with a better wardrobe.

For Prudence, I think Lucy Lawless would be an interesting choice. Like Prudence, she is perhaps not classically beautiful but certainly striking and handsome.

I like Orlando Bloom for Robin, and Emma Watson for Letty.

Carol She's So Novel꧁꧂ Susan in Perthshire wrote: "I thought Gwyneth Paltrow and Renee Zellweger really did an excellent job on their accents. I was pleasantly surprised ...

I thought Zellweger's accent was wonderful. I can't remember Paltrow's - so that's a good sign.

He certainly has the height!

I think Emma Watson looks too intelligent for Letty! ;)

message 27: by Belinda (new)

Belinda | 220 comments Did you really think Gwyneth in 'Shakespeare in love' did a good accent? I found it jarring. I have to admit she got better in 'emma'.

Carol, that's why I *liked* her for Letty - I think she might make her seem a little less witless!

message 30: by Carolm (new)

Carolm | 63 comments I had thought Johnny Depp for Robin, but then the actress for Prue would have to be a bit taller. Orlando Bloom is good as well.

As for short actors, apparently John Wayne was only about 5'6", so all the sets were very short.

Susan in Perthshire (susanageofaquarius) | 1448 comments Orlando Bloom is 5'10

Carol She's So Novel꧁꧂ Abigail wrote: "Robert Redford is a munchkin, too."

Yes I forced my kids to watch the Redford version of The Great Gatsby with me (they will forgive me one day!) There is one shot where they get the proportions wrong & Sam Shepherd (Nick) is clearly towering over Redford.

Elliot Jackson | 275 comments Since we're going all free-wheeling with our time/space actor continuum, I wonder why no one has thought of Johhny Depp as *Robin*! He has that fey elfin quality that would make him appear a very creditable girl - and of course, the swagger and physical chops to be suitably dashing as l'Inconnu.

ETA Well, of course, I said "no one had mentioned Johnny Depp for Robin", only to look again and see that Carolm had, of course! I blame my allergies making my eyes all puffy, so I can't read! Yeah, that's it...
