Dude | 11 comments The book I am trying to remember the title of is a science fiction book that I think was written in the 2000s. The plot took place in the near future and was about how in Western democracies freedom had become all but in name only due to security concerns. Whereas, while Eastern Europe was less democratic, people had more freedoms.

Unfortunately, I only remember that overall theme of the book. I can't remember plot specifics.

Andy | 2124 comments That's something that comes up in a number of books; I recall that as part of the background to Signal to Noise Signal to Noise by Eric Nylund, and The Genesis Machine The Genesis Machine by James Hogan (and in an older example, Poul Anderson's Corridors of Time The Corridors of Time)

Dude | 11 comments I would add that the scifi book I'm trying to remember the name of doesn't involve aliens.

Can you tell us anything about the main character(s) - gender, politician/military/computer hacker/businessperson/social activist/etc.?

Locations - mostly Eastern Europe, Western Europe, USA, etc.?

How much science fiction or computer hacking is in this story?

beichst | 171 comments Another James Hogan possibility is Multiplex Man. It is a bit earlier (1994) but the basic premise matches what you have listed

https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1...

"Richard Jarrow was a mild and unassuming teacher who was sure that the government knew best, with its strong environmental controls on industry and its equally stringent control of education and the media. He knew that the countries of the former Eastern Block, who now claimed to have more freedom than the United States, as well as booming economies fueled by their exploitation of the resources of space, "

A real longshot might be "Russian Spring" by Norman Spinrad.

"Rich..."

Definitely not Russian Spring, but The Multiplex Man is a definite possibility. I'll have to look into that one. Thank you!
