Shelf #7: Demons
Date finished/Rating: 9/22 ★★★
Review: Just meh. I didn't feel any chemistry between these two...it almost felt as if they didn't have much choice, specially on the hero's side. The narrator for this book does a TERRIBLE irish accent so none of the Irish characters were very appealing - and this included the hero, his brother and father. At least it got exciting at the end. I'll continue reading because I want to see where the series is going. Oh and by the way, no demons so I don't know why this person shelved it that way. :)

BarbaraAnn | 248 comments Shelf #7 - Demons

Hell Cop by Astrid Amara
Date finished/rating: 9/25 ****
Review: The book is actually 3 short unconnected stories detailing different characters/aspects of a world with a lot of magic. Given the limitation of the length of each story, I really enjoyed the book. The characters were all interesting, the sex was hot (sometimes literally) and I'll be interested to read the sequel, which I think takes the same characters a bit later.

The Golden Lily (Bloodlines, #2) by Richelle Mead
Book: The Golden Lily by Richelle Mead
How it fits: shelved 30 times as spin-off
Pages: 418/GR
Date: 9/26/17
Rating: 5 stars

Review:
I started this book many times, but must have never been in the mood for it because now that I've finally finished it I have to say that I loved it! Sydney is a great character and I loved watching her do new things in this novel. (view spoiler) I'm hoping to read the next book in the series soon.

Book: The Unfailing Light by Robin Bridges
How it fits: shelved 1 time as demons
Pages: 320/GR
Date: 9/23/17
Rating: 3 stars

Review:
I loved the setting, again, but I still found the plot to be confusing. Katiya was okay, but I thought there were several times she did silly things. Maybe reading the final book will help my feelings about this book, but The Unfailing Light was typical of most second books in trilogies.

Taken (Alex Verus, #3) by Benedict Jacka A Dragon of a Different Color (Heartstrikers, #4) by Rachel Aaron Wild Cat (Shifters Unbound, #3) by Jennifer Ashley

I'll read one of those...not sure of which one now...

D.G. | 2752 comments Ok, I settled on Wild Cat (Shifters Unbound, #3) by Jennifer Ashley for Reader's Choice, mostly because the next book in that series is "Half and Half" so I want to be ready if that shelf is called next. :)

D.G. | 2752 comments Wild Cat (Shifters Unbound, #3) by Jennifer Ashley
Shelf #8: Reader's Choice
Date finished/Rating: 9/30 ★★★½
Review: I really like this one. I really liked having the hero being the human with the heroine being the shifter for once. I loved how close he was with his brother - this relationship was my favorite of the book - and I loved how he stood up to the shifters. I have a problem in this series that everybody seems able to look eye to eye to dominant shifters but here I believe it. I mean, Diego was a cop and used to deal with all sorts of dangers. I'm sure he couldn't be intimidated easily.

If there was a weakness in the book, it was the premise. I found it unbelievable that Cassidy was hot for Diego's bod just a year (the description is wrong) later after her mate died - it just seemed too soon and shifters live such long lives that for them a year is like a few months. I also found it unbelievable that they would forgive the fae at the end for what he did. Oh and the Spanish used in the book was horrendous too. M'hija means "mi hija" as in "my daughter" so you can imagine my HORROR at having Diego calling Cassidy that in moments of passion. EWWW!!! The author was definitely misinformed as to what that phrase meant.

I'll keep reading the next few books but I'm still not completely sold out in the series.

Stacie (thesebooksaremyfriends) Shelf 8: Reader's Choice
The Amazing Maurice and His Educated Rodents (Discworld, #28) by Terry Pratchett
How it fits: #28 in a series/my choice
Pages: 256
Date: 10/1
Rating: 2 stars
Review: Usually with Pratchett, I am able to plop down in Discworld anywhere and understand what is going on (give or take). In this one, I was completely confused. I feel like I was right in the middle of a story, even when the book ended. I couldn't get engaged with the story even with a talking cat! It just didn't do it for me. I honestly could not tell you much about what went on other than talking cats and rats. I didn't laugh and I spent most of the story annoyed. This is rare for a Pratchett and I'm bummed.

Fire Touched (Mercy Thompson, #9) by Patricia Briggs
How it fits: #9 in Mercy Thompson series
Page - 352 pg GR
Finished 10/3/17
Rating ****
Review - this is definitely not a series where the books can be read as stand-a-lone. It's even harder now that the Alpha & Omega series is running in the same date-zone as the Mercy Thompson series. The author does a good job of bringing the story up to date without over-explaining, so it's not a huge deal. I love Mercy and Adam's relationship - it's grown over time and they're a solid couple. I also liked the fact that the pack's issue came to a head and were resolved. New characters I hope are expanded in future books (More Sherwood!). Good addition to the series.

D.G. | 2752 comments Good morning! Are you ready for a new shelf?

I just realized that "Reader's Choice" gave us 2 different 3-in a row so if we'll be 2 away from Bingo 4 times. :) This means that now a lot of shelves will give us 4-in a row:

PNR, Half & Half, End of the World (twice), Published 2015, Angels, Guilty Pleasures and Shifters.

Of course with our luck, it's very likely that we'll get one of the other shelves!

D.G. | 2752 comments Taken (Alex Verus, #3) by Benedict Jacka
Shelf #9: magical realism
Date finished/Rating: 10/7 ★★★★
Review: Alex is the kind of character I love: he wins not because he's the strongest mage (he isn't) but because he's become really good with the gifts he has (his divination), he's super smart, he's worked hard to compensate for the things he lacks (he's become really good fighter in a world where mages only trust their magic), without any crazy ego (he's not afraid to run away if that's the safest choice) and he's ruthless when he needs to.

I've loved every single of the books in this series. The investigation is always interesting and this one was so CREEPY!! At the beginning of the series I thought Luna would be a love interest but now it seems she'll be more of a sidekick. Now my sights are set for Anne for that role. We'll see!

Review:
Sigh. I had such high hopes for this book. It had books on the cover, the main character gets to do my dream and run a bookshop and it just flopped. I hated her friends and thought she deserved better. The relationship with her landlord seemed a little forced. I did like how she really seemed to become part of the town and the way she (Nina) helped the Clarks but overall the book just missed the mark for me and that makes me very sad.

Sorry - I ended up changing my choice for this week:
Brownies and Broomsticks (A Magical Bakery Mystery, #1) by Bailey Cates
12 people have tagged it as magical realism
335 pages
Date: 10/8
Rating: ****
Review - I was surprised by how much I enjoyed this book as cozy mystery isn't usually a "go-to" genre. I started this just because it had a long, thin item on the cover I needed for a challenge. Yes, there were a few "what are you thinking, call the police you idiot?" moments, but I liked the main character and the supporting characters seem interesting. The author also provided a few surprises (I was sure I knew the villain but was wrong for instance). I'll probably read the next one at some point.

D.G. | 2752 comments No problem, BarbaraAnn!

LOLed @ Yes, there were a few "what are you thinking, call the police you idiot?" moments

message 244: by D.G. (new)

D.G. | 2752 comments So with 'magical realism' we have 5 3-in-a-rows. (LOL!) The following will give us 4 in a row while still allowing us to keep the game for another week: PNR, Half & Half, Published 2015, Angels, Guilty Pleasures, Aliens & UF

But given our luck, I'm thinking we won't get any of those shelves...most likely something that's both obscure and will give us a couple of more 3 in a row but not 4...hmmm... maybe series complete or even worse PN suspense, who doesn't help us at all.
