This started out quirky and fun and I was really liking it. Then I'm not sure what happened. It started to peter out and lose me. Greg was kind of a dick and a horrible friend. There were some LOL moments but for the most part it was meh.

I was not feeling this one at all. Most of the characters just annoyed me. I especially hated Mackenzie. If I were to pick one character that I actually liked it would be Cooper. And she shit all over him. I was upset when at first he took her back with very minimal groveling but luckily he pulled his head out of his ass and dropped her for good. I will not be reading the next book in this series.

Kim Shumaker (kim_shumaker) | 707 comments Way to go, Krissy! Where do we stand now as far as getting our stamps?
I'm still looking for a Debut Author book. I'll let you know as soon as I decide.

LaurLa | 1207 comments Welcome Krissy! Thanks for joining with us. I hope all goes well (or gets better) for Sarah.

Krissy (krissystewart) This is a very quiet team. Lol

message 65: by Kim (new)

Kim Shumaker (kim_shumaker) | 707 comments This is the most quiet team I've been on. I am generally much more interactive but I have been overwhelmed with RL and I apologize. I absolutely could not find a debuet author book I wanted to read that my library had the audio available. I listen at work so I do alot of my reading this way. I finally picked Everneath. I should have it done by shelf call or shortly thereafter.

message 66: by Krissy (new)

Krissy (krissystewart) I'm a big audiobook listener as well. I just prefer them.

message 68: by Thenia (new)

Thenia | 977 comments Ugh, I'm so sorry ladies, RL has been keeping me occupied as well. I'm starting a new job soon so things should return to some kind of order, allowing me to be more present in the team thread.

I'm probably the one keeping us from at least a couple of our stamps and I'll try to finally write my reviews one of those days and catch up with everything.

For those of you who haven't seen it yet, our new shelf is Action Packed.

P.S.: Did I welcome you to the team Krissy? If I didn't, welcome and thanks for stepping in!

House Immortal (House Immortal, #1) by Devon Monk House Immortal by Devon Monk (BEST OF UF series) ~ ★★★ (08/10/2017)

Review:

The introduction to Matilda Case's world, where eleven Houses have replaced countries and now rule the planet's resources, each one in charge of a different resource.

Matilda, or Tilly, is not what someone would call normal, having undergone a type of operation that turned her into something similar to the twelve "stitched", a group of nearly immortal people who survived a curious accident many years ago.

Tilly has been hiding all her life, not wanting to become the property of one of the Houses like the rest of the stitched, but that is no longer an option. There are a number of mysteries that she needs to solve, including her brother's disappearance and the reason behind her parents' death, and for that to happen she needs to take an active role in the world of the Houses, the only place where she's likely to find some answers.

Engaging plot that leaves you wanting more, since nothing's really resolved by the end of the book. It is only the first part of Tilly's story that continues in the next book, Infinity Bell.

LaurLa | 1207 comments I'm still working on my book for Debut Author. That one was really hard and I was late picking it because, well, I thought I had. *smh* Anyway, I should have it no later than Friday.

Tiger Eye (Dirk & Steele, #1) by Marjorie M. Liu Tiger Eye - Marjorie M. Liu ~ ★★★ (08/14/2017)

Review:

The story of Dela, an artist and weapon maker with the ability to hear the "call" of weapons, and Hari, a tiger shifter who has been cursed to serve as a slave to whomever holds the box he's been imprisoned in.

Dela is on a trip to China when the curious little box comes into her hands and she's pretty surprised when she opens it and a scarred warrior appears in her hotel room. Hari is hostile, expecting her to be the same as all his previous masters, and has trouble believing that she really wants nothing from him and treats him with kindness.

Dela's life is in danger, however, and Hari uses his significant skills to protect her, while trying to get acclimated to this new and unfamiliar world he's woken up in. The mage who enslaved him is after them as well, intent on getting Hari's box back in his possession, and the two of them fly back to the States, where the second part of their story takes place.

There, Dela's friends who are part of the international detective agency Dirk & Steele are enlisted to help protect her, and they slowly uncover the truth behind the attempts on her life, before Dela and Hari eventually deal with the mage.

Engaging story, if a bit dated, that introduces a number of interesting characters that we'll probably see more of in following books of the series, with Artur's story coming next in Shadow Touch.

Brutal Precious (Lovely Vicious, #3) by Sara Wolf Brutal Precious - Sara Wolf ~ ★★★★ (08/21/2017)

Review:

Isis and Jack finally get their happy ending, but they have to work quite hard for it.

Time has passed since Sophia's death and Jack's disappearance, and Isis is now attending university, ready for a new start but slightly depressed about being away from all of her friends. As luck would have it, Jack is attending the same university, but so does "Nameless", the guy from her past that caused a great deal of her issues.

Sophie has no choice but to finally deal with her past trauma and insecurities and Jack has to decide if he deserves happiness, while both of them have to do some healing and some maturing.

The undeniably deep love between them inevitably leads to their much-anticipated, long-delayed and well-deserved happily ever after.

I am not normally a fan of young or new adult stories, since I often find myself impatient with the characters, but despite the many flaws between those two, I really enjoyed reading their story.

Review:
This was one those romance reads for me that is easy to read. We get to see a romance/relationship build. There's no over the top drama or angst - just two people falling for each other and getting to know each other. It was fairly mild despite the many sex scenes - they weren't all that steamy in my opinion. Overall a relaxing read because after the first minor disagreement you realize that there isn't going to be long drawn out frustrating misunderstandings, so you can just glide through the rest.

Sandra | 25908 comments No you don't really need to read the Magnus series first, Kim. There is some crossover of secondary characters in one of the Pride shorties, I think its called Miss Congeniality or something similiar.

Though I found the Magnus a fun & crazy series and it would be a shame to miss them.

Thanks for the info, Sandra. I've been wanting to read them but I have so many half-finished series going right now. I'll probably give them a go once I read Into the Fire and finish up that series.

Review:
All in all I really enjoyed this story. It was a little hard to get in to at first and the world building is a bit confusing. Definitely a YA novel and it reminded me a lot of the Fallen series by Lauren Kate.
High school girl, football star boyfriend (good guy) and "bad boy" in a rock band (not sure if he's good or not). It's a clean story with a lot of potential. I will definitely continue the series.

Loved it. I didn't like how the whole Aimeric situation ended but I get it. It shed a little more light onto the history of Laurent and his uncle. Damn cliffhanger though. Plus I'm not sure if I like the narrator of the audiobook much. He wasn't bad per se. But I didn't feel like he fit the setting and story very well. Just my opinion.

Since I didn't even know there was crossover with another series, I'd say no, you don't need to read it! I like the Pride series. It's a little wacky an some over the top, but if a fun way :-)

Review:
Wow! It has been a really long time since I've read a book in one sitting. The majority of this book takes place in the "Everneath" as we follow Nikki (with Cole's assistance) in her race against time to save her true love, Jack. The author does such a good job of describing what this hell-ish place is like. It was very exciting with dangers around every corner. The story ends with one hell of a startling revelation and I can't wait to start reading the final book to see how it all ends.
The writing was much better than it was in the first book and there isn't as much teenage drama, but it is still very much a YA book. If you like the YA genre I highly recommend this series.

A very different take on vampires, I think. I enjoyed it. I really liked Greg's snarkiness in his own mind while he was tied up. All the characters were a little Pollyanna-ish, I think, but maybe that will change as the series continues. But as of now it feels like a light, cute vampire PNR read. A good palate cleanser for some of the darker edgier ones :-)

I have had this series in my TBR stack forever and am glad I was able to start it. I love the world that the author has created - demon heroes with deep morals who draw their powers from the elements and are the protectors of the human race. The unique twist with the Druids is very interesting. In my "mind's eye" my idea of a Druid was some helmeted alien-looking thing. I have no idea of where I came up with that but I like these Druids much better.
A very good book and I'm looking forward to continuing the series.

The Emperor's Arrow by Lauren D.M. Smith The Emperor's Arrow - Lauren D.M. Smith ~ ★★★★ (09/01/2017)

Review:

Evony, a kick-ass Amazzi warrior, is selected to represent her people in the emperor's summons to the court as one of the candidates for his bride.

Evony, who initially wants nothing more than to return home immediately, soon finds friendship and a reason to stay. Galen, the emperor, confides in her the real reason for the summons and asks for her help in uncovering the conspirators that are rumored to be mobilizing against him.

The two become friends, each appreciating the other's unique qualities, and that friendship grows into love that makes both of them better.

A very enjoyable story that surprised me and the exact right thing I was in the mood for when I picked it up. I look forward to reading more of the author's work.

Full Throttle (Black Knights Inc., #7) by Julie Ann Walker Full Throttle - Julie Ann Walker ~ ★★★ (09/02/2017)

Review:

The story of Carlos "Steady" Soto and his latest assignment who is someone from his past, Abby, one of the daughters of the President of the United States.

Carlos's team is tasked with providing additional security for Abby on her trip overseas after chatter had been intercepted of plans for a kidnapping of her sister. Their presence is supposed to be only a precaution, but when most of her security team is eliminated and Abby is gone, the Black Knights are the only ones near enough to provide assistance.

Carlos, who believed that Abby had rebuffed his advances when they were younger because they were from two different worlds, is determined to get her back safely. While his team is gathering information and requests assistance, he embarks in a reconnaissance mission that turns into a rescue mission when he takes advantage of the kidnapper's lax security. The two end up fleeing in the forest with armed pursuers at their heels and a long trek between them and the border and safety.

Abby, who always had a thing for Carlos, believes herself responsible for (view spoiler).

The two missed their chance the first time, but despite the danger surrounding them this time around, they give in to their feelings for one another. Unfortunately, Abby is a coward who (view spoiler).

They eventually get their happily ever after, but Abby annoyed me too much for me to enjoy it as much as I normally would. Next in the series comes Too Hard to Handle and Dan and agent Penni's story that started in this book.
