A Court of Wings and Ruin (A Court of Thorns and Roses, #3) by Sarah J. Maas

Read: 8/22/17
Rating: 5 stars

Review

I have never seen sweeter words than when at the end of the book, there was a page saying that this series will continue in 2018. As I got closer and closer to the end, I kept thinking, 'I don't want to leave this world' because there is just so much left to explore. That's not to say this one didn't deliver a satisfying ending to Feyre's story because it definitely did. In fact, I can't think of one slow moment in the entire book, and that's saying something for a book of this size. There were plenty of moments of edge of your seat action, and I stayed up well into the night to find out how it all was going to end. I'm so happy that I won't have to say goodbye to this world and these characters just yet.

does anyone know if this one has to be on the linked shelf or if it can be any debut novel?

Melissa Davis | 790 comments thank you! I just checked out Wicked Like a Wildfire from the library & wanted to make sure before I started it. I will check the list & if it's not there, I will pick something else.

Diane ~Firefly~ | 913 comments I'm going to read this for the debut author shelf.

Darkness Becomes Her (Gods & Monsters, #1) by Kelly Keaton

Melissa Davis | 790 comments Wicked Like a Wildfire is on the the "2017-debut-author" list but not a "debut-author" only. I'm thinking maybe I'll pick The Girls - it's been on my TBR for a while.

message 109: by Melissa (new)

Melissa Davis | 790 comments ooooooooo.... just noticed that Caraval is also on the list ... if The Girls doesn't do it for me I might switch ...

Melissa Davis | 790 comments Hey Diane, have you seen this Book Riot article???

12 MYTHOLOGY-INSPIRED YOUNG ADULT NOVELS

The only one on the list that I've read is The Chaos of Stars. I really liked it (Egyptian mythology is kinda hard to come by)!

message 113: by Diane ~Firefly~ (new)

Diane ~Firefly~ | 913 comments Thanks Melissa. I haven't read any of those. I was surprised some of my favorites didn't make it. :(

message 114: by Melissa (new)

Melissa Davis | 790 comments Yeah? Which ones are your favorites?

I added Bull to my TBR. I think a re-imagining of the minotaur story written in verse sounds like something I have to see!

message 115: by Nici (new)

Nici (queennici102) | 697 comments i finished Grimm (The Temple Chronicles, #3) by Shayne Silvers on 8/24 for the week two shelf. I give it three and a half stars. I really like the story, it even made me cry at one point. I just have a hard time with the writing style. Occasionally the book references events that we weren't told about and it makes it really confusing. Usually it will be clarified within a chapter but it often leaves me going did I skip a page?

message 116: by Nici (new)

Nici (queennici102) | 697 comments for the debut shelf I will be reading Gates of Thread and Stone because it is free for kindle unlimited. If I had time to run to the library, I probably would have gone for something else.

I put these on my wishlist:
The Lost Sun (The United States of Asgard, #1) by Tessa Gratton , The Chaos of Stars by Kiersten White , Summer of the Mariposas by Guadalupe Garcia McCall

These are my favorite YA mythological books/series:
Touch of Frost (Mythos Academy, #1) by Jennifer Estep From Gods (Descendant Prophecies, #1) by Mary Ting Valkyrie Rising (Valkyrie, #1) by Ingrid Paulson Temping Fate by Esther M. Friesner My Ex From Hell (The Blooming Goddess Trilogy, #1) by Tellulah Darling
and of course the Percy Jackson series

For non-YA mythological, I really like these:
Dark Descendant (Nikki Glass, #1) by Jenna Black Huntress (Grace Murphy, #1) by Nicole Hamlett Gods Behaving Badly by Marie Phillips Divine By Mistake (Partholon, #1) by P.C. Cast Red Hot Fury (Shades of Fury, #1) by Kasey MacKenzie Hounded (The Iron Druid Chronicles, #1) by Kevin Hearne WebMage (Webmage, #1) by Kelly McCullough

What are your favorites?

message 118: by Melissa (new)

Melissa Davis | 790 comments Diane ~Firefly~ wrote: "What are your favorites?"

Anything by Neil Gaiman, especially:

The whole Sandman run: Fables and Reflections (The Sandman #6) by Neil Gaiman & The Sandman The Dream Hunters by Neil Gaiman in particular. The Sandman series is definietly my #1. Gaiman's mythology surrounding The Endless - I just love it - it seems so obvious that it's easy to forget that it's not a true mythos. Add to that bits and pieces from around the world and it's just amazing.

American Gods by Neil Gaiman which blew my twenty-something mind way back in 2001.

And The Ocean at the End of the Lane by Neil Gaiman - he does The Kindly Ones/Fates/Furies so beautifully.

Kevin Hearne's Hounded (The Iron Druid Chronicles, #1) by Kevin Hearne is in my top 5 all time series. I love all the variety of gods. I love The Morrigan & Perun. I love Owen. I love all the action. I especially - more than anything- love Oberon.

I will always have a special place in my heart for Sherrilyn Kenyon's Darkhunters - this was the series that really launched my love for PNR and it was largely b/c of Artemis & the other gods meddling in the lives of humans & supernatural creatures alike.

ALL of the Rick Riordan stuff: The Lightning Thief (Percy Jackson and the Olympians, #1) by Rick Riordan The Lost Hero (The Heroes of Olympus, #1) by Rick Riordan The Red Pyramid (Kane Chronicles, #1) by Rick Riordan The Sword of Summer (Magnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard, #1) by Rick Riordan The Hidden Oracle (The Trials of Apollo, #1) by Rick Riordan Percy Jackson's Greek Gods (A Percy Jackson and the Olympians Guide) by Rick Riordan Percy Jackson's Greek Heroes by Rick Riordan

Zeus King of the Gods (Olympians, #1) by George O'Connor (The Olympians series) by George O'Connor is good and the artwork is beautiful.

Last month I read Bone Gap by Laura Ruby - it was a twist on the Persephone myth and I loved, loved, loved it.

The Possessions by Sara Flannery Murphy is also on my Best Books Read in 2017 list (Eurydice & Orpheus/Lotus Eaters). I really can't rave about this one enough. I understand people's arguments for why they didn't like the book - because the MC is bland and they don't care about her but I just want to shake them and say "Gah! That's the freaking point!!"

Darkness Becomes Her (Gods & Monsters, #1) by Kelly Keaton
finished: 8/26/17
rating: 3 stars

review: I wasn't sure what to expect with this book, but it was interesting. Ari is searching for her birth mother and it leads her to N2 (New Orleans was leveled then bought by 9 families and is a haven for the "different"). Once there she hooks up with a group of kids and they help her on her quest which leads her to find out there is a lot more in the worlds than she thought possible. There is insta-love with Sebastian, but it wasn't too annoying. I will read the next one.

Melissa Davis | 790 comments Week 3: Debut Author
The Girls by Emma Cline Finished: 8/28/17 (★★★★★)

I reeeallly liked this book. The first time I picked it up was immediately after I read Girls on Fire. I stopped reading The Girls before finishing the first chapter because I was still too invested in Wasserman's book and wasn't prepared to switch gears. I'm extremely glad that I waited to read this one because The Girls is freaking fantastic and my opinion of this book would definitely have been colored by comparisons.

The Girls is loosely based on the Manson Family insanity but is really about a fourteen-year-old girl on the periphery. Evie wants to belong so bad that it's uncomfortable to watch. She's so desperate for love/attention/connection that it's easy to see how she is sucked in by Russell's ideology and Suzanne in particular. No one in this book is particularly likable but it's super intense and maybe that's what kept me reading.

I want to reiterate that this one is about a fourteen-year-old girl on the outside looking in. It is not about the murders. It is not about the charismatic leader. (I think maybe this accounts for some of the reviews by disappointed readers.) Evie is invited to The Farm but even as she lives among them, she's still an outsider. She is never actually accepted as part of the group. This gives her a truly unique perspective. To add even more depth, we not only hear the story from her first account experience but we also get snippets from her grown up point of view looking back.

Emma Cline did a fantastic job weaving this story. I really couldn't believe that I was reading a debut novel. The writing was just beautiful.

Rating: 4.5 stars

Review

This one surprised me. I wasn't really in the mood for it, but once I started it, I had a very hard time putting it down. It's really easy to slip into this world and get carried away. There were some things that really surprised me, although I did guess one thing that happened towards the end. That being said, it didn't affect my enjoyment of the book at all. I'm definitely going to be reading the next one, probably sooner rather than later.

Melissa Davis | 790 comments Thanks, Steph! I read the 1st one earlier this year and I liked it well enough but I wasn't super excited to continue. I ran into a friend who told me to keep going - apparently, book 3 is where it gets really good. ??? idk. Anyway, I started this one last night - I was soooo tired but I couldn't put it down! (Werewolves are a weakness of mine!) I'm only about a third of the way through but I am enjoying this one so much more than the last one. And bonus! - my library has the audio available so I can listen @ work today!

I'm glad you like Red Queen! that one has been on my TBR for a while. I might have to move it up!

I'm totally a sucker for shape shifters ... but werewolves especially. I loved that there were all different types of werewolves in this story. I think I'll have to go back & re-read the part where Bob describes them. I enjoyed this installment of The Dresden Files more than the first. I am looking forward to book 3!

It was great to finally get Jordan and Katie's story, although it was full of more challenges than expected since they were both infected by the virus at the start of this book (10 years later than the last one). And while they got their happy ending, things weren't so great for a couple other favorites. Good to see all the characters and the story keep going and looking forward to the next one.

Review

This one certainly deserved to be on the action packed list. I had a very hard time putting the book down because there was never a time when I thought "Here's a good place to stop for the night." I would usually only stop when my Kindle actually fell on me after accidentally falling asleep because it was so late lol. I don't want to give anything away, so suffice to say that I think people who enjoyed the first one will be pleased by this one as well. With the way things were left, I'm definitely wanting to read book 3 sooner rather than later!
