Completion Post - Spin Off
finished: 9/20/17
rating: 3 stars
review: The romance was just ok. But great characters and interaction with a bit of a mystery. Plus it is cool to see female programmer.
Not sure yet what I'm going to read for the Demons shelf. Possibly one of the ones below. I should finish before next shelf call.
Looks like we have a chance at a winning shelf next week. So we need to make sure we are all caught up by next shelf call.

I'm amazed by Bardugo's ability to write from so many different points of view and still make the story engaging. Usually, I don't really like more than 2 points of view in a story, and here, we have six, but they're really all needed, and each offers a unique view into what's going on. I was hooked from the beginning and was constantly wondering what was going to happen next, or how our group of six was going to get out of the mess they found themselves in. All in all, everything wrapped up nicely. I would have liked a bit more information on how everyone is doing in the future, specifically (view spoiler), but really, I'm very satisfied with how it ended.["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>
I'm going to try Pleasure Unbound by Larissa Ione for my Demons pick. I was able to get the audio, so I can tag-team between reading & listening.

review: Kane finds his demon destroyer, but she was raised with no knowledge of the supernatural world. After he saves her, she is willing to help (especially since they have to save her grandmother as well). She is sweet and stubborn. Kane likes her but refuses to believe in love and she is what they need to save his brother from the demons.
Nici, did you pick a demons book? IDK if you saw Diane's post but we want to try to be caught up before Wednesday because we will be 1 away from BINGO if we can request our demon's stamp before then.
i finished reading Snowballs in Hell for my demon book. This book kept me amused. One of the things I like about this book is that there are some great sex scences, but they add to the plot. They don't distract from the story line (looking at you, anita blake! LOL). I am also liking the cliffhanger endings that just make me want to read more. five stars. finished 9/25.

Review: This was my first Larissa Ione book. I didn't really know what to expect. If I had read this five years ago, when I first heard about it, I probably would have loved it. I have been a huge BTVS fan for a reeeally long time so I was pretty excited when the slayers were refered to as Buffys and who doesn't love Hellboy?!? So big bonus points there. I loved that Tayla was a fighter and super tough and I loved that Eidolon recognized that about her and acknowledged it everytime he felt like protecting her.
This book had a good amount of action/fight scenes and that made for a quick read.
The sex scenes were steamy BUT this is where the book kinda lost me. Sex scenes are a yes. The steamier the better. However, I don't like questionable consent. Weird stuff with Wraith and the times when E. is in the throes of transition definitely blurs the line. Especially when one of the partners has a history of sexual trauma. That part felt pretty skeevy and unrealistic - demon or not.

review:
Verity can see ghosts and accidently grounded Frankie (a mobster) to her rosebush. When she and her sister find a body, she asks Frankie to help her question the local ghosts to get a lead. As the town is celebrating its annual Cannonball in the Wall (Civil War thing), she learns this murder has roots in the past.
I am going to change my reader's choice book to This Savage Song (#1) by Victoria Schwab. I forgot that I had a hold on it at the library but it came in on Friday & I can't put it down!
Title/Author: This Savage Song by Victoria Schwab
Read: 10/2/2017
Rating: ★★★★
This book was a perfect way to start my October! Super creepy!
“Corsai, Corsai, tooth and claw,
Shadow and bone will eat you raw.
Malchai, Malchai, sharp and sly,
Smile and bite and drink you dry.”
“Sunai, Sunai, eyes like coal,
Sing you a song and steal your soul.”
*shivers!* And when Kate & August are trapped in the subway with the Corsai!?!? Holy moly! Probably going to be dreaming about that this week!
When I checked this out from the library, I had no idea what to expect. People seem to love Victoria Schwab and I can see why! I will definitely be looking out for Our Dark Duet, book 2 in this duology!
I'm going to do my best to get my book finished by tomorrow. I got hit by the virus that my two older boys had last week, so I'm having a hard time getting my reading time in cuz all I want to do is sleep lol.
I just wasn't prepared for cold/flu season to hit so early! My 3-year-old got croup. Then my almost 2-year-old got a real bad cold, and now, I can't talk because I've been coughing so much lol. My 6-month-old has started coughing, so I'm just hoping his doesn't get too bad.
That sounds horrendous Steph Ann. I know cause I'm still coughing weeks after I caught the cold/flu that's going around here. And I even had the vaccine.
Hope you and the boys get better real soon!!!!!

Coughing weeks later sounds like either RSV or Pertussis. There is no vaccine for RSV (which causes a bad cold) but there is one for pertussis (also known as whooping cough).
Thank you, Sandra! It definitely wasn't a fun week! It was especially weird to see my middle child, who is normally incapable of sitting still, want to do nothing but lay on the couch or sit in my lap. It just didn't seem natural lol.I hope your cough gets better soon, Sandra!

Nope, its how I've always been with a cold. It's like something tickles your throat and you cough.
It was the flu vaccine I have every yr, but they are saying that this yr it wasn't as effective as they'd like, as it had mutated.
Thanks Steph :)

I was a little worried starting this one because I absolutely loved the original Powder Mage trilogy, and I was scared that this spin off couldn't live up to the original. Thankfully, my worries were unfounded, and I got sucked into this first book just as easily as I did the original trilogy. It does get off to a bit of a slow start, but once the pace picks up, it just keeps building steam and never lets up. The last page leaves you wanting more, and I can't wait for the next one to come out.
A full review will be posted over at Dark Faerie Tales. I'll edit this post with a link once it's up.
Completion Post - Magical Realism

review: Kind of Chick-lit paranormal as Liv is ready for major changes in her life and then finds out she has magical powers from a stranger. She has a great group of friends and a man she is crazy about who just wants to be friends. Then she finds out more about her family and that someone is trying to kill her. I really enjoyed the characters and plan to read the next one.
Soooo ... The Diviners ... is not working for me. I think I would probably love it if I didn't feel the pressure to finish it so quickly. It's super detailed and beautiful but I feel like it's one of those books that I would want to take my time with. So, I'm going to continue reading it but I'm not going to use it for this week's shelf. I'm going to try out Carry On and The Boy Who Drew Monsters. Carry On has been on my TBR for forever and I wish there was a HP book that I hadn't read before for this category but since there's not - maybe this fanfic will suffice??
The Boy Who Drew Monsters is on my radar because it's spooky story month! This one is supposed to be like a Japanese horror story and that sounds super scary and totally up my alley.
I changed my mind about the reader's choice book and read White Cat instead. And the rest of the series lol I couldn't put them down. I adore holly black. I loved the setting and the plot twists in these books and give it five stars. Finished it on 9/29
for magical realism I decided to go for Storm Front this is a series that I have always to start and I was happy to find on this list, as many of the other books held no interest for me. I am almost done.

This one is hard to review. While it moved quickly, and I was interested in what was going on, something just felt off. For one, the first part of the book is written in the 2nd person, which just felt weird. Then, we switch to 1st person and then back to 2nd for a chapter. It just made the flow of the book feel very choppy. When it was in 1st person, it flowed well, and I really wish that's how the whole book went.
Other than that, I don't have much to complain about. As I said, I enjoyed the book, but the flow just didn't always work for me. I'll probably try the 2nd one at some point just to see if it gets any better.
