I've seen people use it to state their opinion on the section where they're at, but I'm super sensitive to spoilers. For me, saying "OMG Can't believe that plot twist at 37%" is, what Redheadedgirl called, an "anticipation spoiler". Beyond the blurb, I want to know virtually nothing going in. I only read reviews after I've finished. Maybe I'm just my own flavour of weird.
Interested in how other people use it though.
Second what Jayne said. Start and finish only and don't read the reviews before. I rarely read the reviews after (never before). I want to experience the book without any outside "noise". If someone is really pushing a book (for example Oprah's Book Club), I probably won't read it. Also "I'm just my own flavour of weird." (Good summation Jayne!)

I'm also with Jayne! I tend to only do it for marking my progress through a book. I rarely leave comments in a status.
