Great intro, Adele!Dit is met 'n seer hart dat ek moet verskoning vra. Na ALWTF, ek moet vir die volgende twee maande my volle fokus op my skryfwerk sit. Ek is besig met die eerste draft of 'Who Killed Mandela?', en ek moet dit klaarkry voordat ek oorsee gaan vir 'n maand in September.
Ek is rerig jammer. Geniet dit!

PS For our beloved 'foreign' group members, see how close you can get to understanding a bit of Afrikaans - good practice for Adele's book choice. 'Kringe in 'n Bos' should be read in the vernacular, and it's a shame that you cannot enjoy it as such. Nevertheless it is a classic, and a wonderful story.

I'm trying to read in both languages. I enjoy Afrikaans poetry, but prose scares me.

I have been a bit absent the past couple of months, settling into a new job as consultant anaesthetist at Tygerberg Hospital and fostering a little girl from my family for two months. Emotional times, but getting back on track.
Lisa will lead discussions for the first couple of weeks or so of June, when we will be reading one of Dalene Matthee's masterpieces, Circles in a Forest, or Kringe in 'n bos, as it is known in Afrikaans. I will try to join in discussion whenever I have internet access, since I am going on a bit of holiday, touring the Karoo and Northern Cape area of South Africa. I last read this novel in 1996, so looong ago, but I am looking forward to reading in again during my camping trip.
So for a bit of background:
Circles in a forest is translated from the original Afrikaans text. It will be interesting how our English speaking readers will interpret some of the themes and i am looking forward in comparing our different views and what we each individually will take from this book.
The main character in this book, for me, and this will be up for debate, is an elephant called Oupoot. I am very curious about what he is called in the English text and I pray that it isn't Bigfoot!!!!!!!! Because that will take away so much of the grace and nobility that is associated with this animal. Directly translated, Oupoot will be "Old Foot", or "Old Paw", but that just doesn't have te same ring to what the name Oupoot has.
