I'm ready to go! got this from the library and I've never listened or read this one before.

Greg | 383 comments I cheated and started last week. I have about 6 1/2 hours left. The first 2-3 hours were a little slow going but it has since picked up. There are some dream sequences and occasions where you are alone with the Narrator's (Mike's) thoughts that get a little too bogged down in my opinion but those aren't overly common thankfully.

I was a little hesitant on this due the fact that it is narrated by King himself and while King is not the best Narrator I've experienced he is not nearly the worst and is doing a pretty good job at it. Much better than Jon Padgett did narrating The Secret of Ventriloquism back in May.

I'm enjoying it thus far. I will check out the mini-series after I'm done but I'm having a hell of a time trying to picture the lead as Pierce Brosnan it's just not happening.

Laurie (barksbooks) (barklesswagmore) | 1471 comments King's voice is a bit nasally but he does that Maine accent as only he can. I've listened to this a few times now and it never loses its punch. I always feel ripped apart when I finish.

Yeah, the tv adaptation was seriously miscast. I would say skip it. It was not good. None of the emotion evoked in the book was evident in the adaptation. It felt soul-less.

Greg | 383 comments Thanks for the update Bark. I try to take in all of his shows/films so I'll still want to check it out. I really do recommend the Hulu rendition of 11/22/63 though I never read/finished the novel. I did however give up on Under the Dome during the 3rd season. I'm trying to watch the Mist as it airs but have been falling behind.

And Dark Tower on Thursday night WOOT WOOT!!!

Laurie (barksbooks) (barklesswagmore) | 1471 comments Ha, I am a sucker for these adaptations even when they're not good. I saw Under the Dome through to the very bitter and very terrible end! I don't have Hulu but will catch 11/22/63 at some point. I LOVED that book. I have The Mist DVR'd and plan to binge on some rainy weekend. Dark Tower is here already?!

Greg | 383 comments It is indeed my fine fellow. (Sorry if Lady, Name and cat picture is ambiguous 🤗)

I am excited and terrified the trailer makes the plot look so rushed. But Elba and McConnaghy look fantastic. But am also sad to not see Susannah and Eddie in a trailer.

Char | 17469 comments Dark Tower-whoohoo! I just saw Idris Elba on Facebook Live answering questions. I'm very excited about this movie.

Two years of my life journeying to the Tower, some took thirty years. Now it's a two hour movie. No no no no no...

I've downloaded a copy from the library of Bones and will start later this week or next.

Char | 17469 comments Heehee! I read the DT books as they came out, now I'm reading them again via audiobooks and the graphic novels.

It looks like they're hoping to do more movies if this one does well.

A lot of people are complaining about the length of both this movie and the new IT: The Gunslinger is too short and IT is too long. I won't let that bother me though, and I do plan on seeing both. I hope they don't suck.

message 11: by Greg (new) - rated it 4 stars

Greg | 383 comments Just finished. I was not let down. I was also pleasantly surprised by King's narrating. I feel I can now go back and do Wind Through a Keyhole, which I was kind of putting off since the other 7 books had such phenomenal narrators.

Bummer I see we were relegated off the Group's front page. We need more participants in these :)

message 12: by Char (new) - rated it 4 stars

Char | 17469 comments You noticed that? I didn't think anyone would.

I thought that since not many people were participating in this one, that it would be more beneficial to put Willie Meikle's book up there, since more people were participating there.

I'm glad you ended up enjoying this listen! I did a piece on this book last year, for a project called King For A Year. Here's a link if anyone is interested:

Greg | 383 comments I noticed but it's definitely understandable.

I'll have to check it out.

Latasha (latasha513) | 11983 comments Mod
I'll start soon. I've been training at work so can't listen. Idk how long I'll be training.

message 15: by Greg (new) - rated it 4 stars

Greg | 383 comments Training yourself or others? Either way good luck those sorts of things can be infuriating.

Latasha (latasha513) | 11983 comments Mod
Lol. Oops! I'm training someone else. Yeah, it's going really good. She's doing great.

message 17: by Greg (new) - rated it 4 stars

Greg | 383 comments Ohh Discordia!! The Dark Tower movie was so terrible. I feel as if someone broke all my for special plates.

Lena | 2680 comments I knew it. These eyes will never be so offended. I have not forgotten the name of my father.

Latasha (latasha513) | 11983 comments Mod
I began this today. i don't mind Stephen King narrating. I gotta find me a man with a Maine accent! lol i love hearing it. anyways, I'm up to the part where Mike has arrived at Sara laugh. i keep thinking, wasn't Sarah's Rest the name of the settlement in Swan Song? haha! (view spoiler)
as for the mini series (view spoiler)

Latasha (latasha513) | 11983 comments Mod
oh! and if you think John Padgett was bad, you need to steer far away from the audio version of Garden of Fiends: Tales of Addiction Horror while listening, i was trying to remember who said authors shouldn't narrate their own books. guess that was you, Greg. But your words of wisdom ring loud & true for that audiobook. the stories are good, just ...pick someone else to read.

Greg | 383 comments Latasha wrote: " it sure takes a while for this one to get going huh?."

Yeah those first few hours were pretty slow going.

Bark wrote: "None of the emotion evoked in the book was evident in the adaptation. It felt soul-less.."

Yeah you were right I just finished it. And while it was better than The Dark Tower film it was not very good. They managed to make Mattie come off as a star fucker in the TV adaptation.

Laurie (barksbooks) (barklesswagmore) | 1471 comments I tried to warn you :). I just read a review for the Mr. Mercedes adaptation and it sounds like they may have done a decent job. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

message 23: by Greg (new) - rated it 4 stars

Greg | 383 comments Is that in theaters or on TV?

Laurie (barksbooks) (barklesswagmore) | 1471 comments Tv Aug 8th or 9th

message 25: by Greg (new) - rated it 4 stars

Greg | 383 comments Thanks for the heads up I'll look it up and set my DVR. I enjoyed Mr. Mercedes but I still need to read the next 2 in the trilogy.

Jen from Quebec :0) (muppetbaby99) | 397 comments I am torn on the Dark Tower film- I have NOT seen it yet nor am I sure I WANT to-- those books were HUGE in my life, and so so good...I don't know if it can translate to film- especially if you have frigging MATTHEW MCCONAUGHY (sp) as The Man in Black??? WHAT? Um....no. Just no. Not good. Argh. I am not sure what to even do about this whole thing...none of the trailer looks like The Dark Tower to me at all- I mean, the filmmakers HAD ILLUSTRATIONS to go by for their cinematography! Why didn't they...*sigh* I will just get too 'riled up' if I go on. --Jen from Quebec :0)

message 27: by Greg (new) - rated it 4 stars

Greg | 383 comments The film is a garbage pail mash up of books 1-3 and 5. Just in case you would want to know what you're getting yourself into. Minus of course Susannah and Eddie Dean.

message 28: by Lena (new) - rated it 4 stars

Lena | 2680 comments I will NEVER see that movie.

Latasha (latasha513) | 11983 comments Mod
I haven't read the dark tower so I wonder if I'd like the movie? well, idk but Annabelle comes out this weekend and I do plan to go see that.

anyways, the book is finally starting to get spooky! I borrowed it from overdrive so I'm not sure what chapter i'm on. I'm on part 11 out of 20, if that helps. (view spoiler) I like hearing about Sara, I hope we learn more about her.

Latasha (latasha513) | 11983 comments Mod
OMG!!! I did NOT EVER see that coming! I don't know where I'm at but I should be close to the end. I think. Mike has just found the owls. wow, just wow.

I finished the book today. all I knew about this before I began it was a writer's wife dies & he thinks his cabin is haunted. this one began so slow. I had even thought about swapping to something else but I'm glad I didn't!! that ending is rough. I really don't know how to rate this book. it was a hellva ride but man! that ending was brutal.
