Another article on the topic, talking about what editors add to the project.
The way I see it, authors are storytellers. They don't have to be hotshots at spelling, grammar and punctuation to tell a good story, but those qualities definitely make a good story into a better read. And that's not counting contributions an editor can make to the way the story itself is told.
