SOLVED. Children's chapter book, mystery, solution involves Alice Through the Looking Glass/chess moves (read in the 90s) [s]

Hello, I read a childrens chapter book back in the 90s or so and I remember it being a mystery (almost like a treasure hunt iirc) and in one part the chess moves from Alice Through the Looking Glass provided a major clue to the puzzle. That's how I first heard about ATtLG, actually. If anyone knows what it is I would appreciate it! I don't remember any more, other than I would have been in grade school.

not it. the book I'm talking about is much older. I read it in the 90s and it was probably written earlier than that.

I think I just found it. 95% sure it is Who Stole the Wizard of Oz? by Avi - I was on a huge Avi kick in grade school.
