SOLVED. Short book russian orphan boy cant remember. [s]

this book is short only 200ish pages. its about a Russian orphan boy who meets up with other orphans and they try to survive together. Its got a red cover. i remember one scene of the main character being startled because another boy slept standing up with his eyes open. he did this because his old master would beat him if he was caught sleeping. i read this book in grade 8 its been over 10 years since then. any ideas? thanks
