Well. Young adult is a bit of a broad term these days. My ten year old brothers have started to tackle the genre much to my chagrin.
But I don't know. There are kids out there reading adult fiction because they find young adult stuff to be too "kiddy" and then there are people who will probably still be reading YA when they're eighty.
There are those kids who are eighty year olds stuck in an eight year old's body - like my brothers. And there will be people, like me, who will probably always be a bit childish on the inside. Hahahaha.
I live in a beautiful country where you have the free will to do what you wish. Why should that not translate to our reading preferences???

I am an adult and yet I love the YA genre and so I am quite happy to brandish my copies of 'teen' books around...without a second thought!
It is good however, to read a healthy mix of younger audience targeted novels & adult books too. You find that the descriptiveness and detail and general themes throughout adult fiction is a lot more complex and in-depth & so it is good to have a balance as an older reader I do think!
There is nothing wrong with reading what might be deemed as a child's story - as for instance, look at Harry Potter.

Life is so short, and the list of truly great books for adults is so long.

I dislike people who make judgments on other people for any reason. She states read what you like but will still slam you in a non direct way.
"Fellow grown-ups, at the risk of sounding snobbish and joyless and old, we are better than this. I know, I know: Live and let read. Far be it from me to disrupt the “everyone should just read/watch/listen to whatever they like” ethos of our era. There’s room for pleasure, escapism, juicy plots, and satisfying endings on the shelves of the serious reader. And if people are reading Eleanor & Park instead of watching Nashville or reading detective novels, so be it, I suppose."
So unless you like to read the same books she likes or watch the same shows there must be something wrong with you.
It called Fiction, adult or YA, it is all an escape for what ever reason.
We all can and will continue to read what interests us regardless. The only one item that has backing is there are some YA books that are better than others, but that applies to all books not just YA.
I read different genres but YA at the moment is my favorite. And I will read YA proudly till I'm ready not to. Which I hope is never. :)

Like any other genre, YA fiction has its ups and downs. There are bad YA books that should be enjoyed by nobody, even the audience they're intended for. There are YA books that are across-the-board hits with people of all age groups (i.e. Harry Potter). Why enjoying something intended for kids or a younger generation is considered shameful is beyond me. Finding good books is already hard enough without putting stupid regulations on what you should and should not read in correlation with your age. There is an element of complete escapism that is found in YA books that is a rarity in adult books. Also, there tends to be more straightforward answers in YA books where you can solve a problem and enjoy a little satisfaction for once. If adults are reading YA books, maybe adult authors should find out why.
