50.1 - Diane's Task: On the Mend

There is a secret to my reading success this season. I looked forward to an adventure-filled summer. I planned to hike the Georgia portion of the Appalachian Trail, go on a 50-mile bike ride, go scuba diving, do lots of swimming (including a 5K), clean my house from top to bottom, and go on a trip to Europe. But… things don’t always go according to plan. The day before my glorious 2-month vacation began, I had an accident and shattered a bone in my leg. My plans quickly changed to surgery and extended couch time.

For this task, you need to read one book for each of 3 options AND your books must total at least 801 pages.
REQUIRED: State the options you chose in your post. Cover tasks require that you include the cover in your post.

No books with a main page genre children or kids are allowed for this task.

Option 1. Must Move.
I miss being able to do the activities that I previously took for granted. I hope to one day be able to fully perform the activities of an active lifestyle again.

Read a book with a present-tense action verb in the title or subtitle. The verb must be something that requires the active use of the limbs in a physical activity with motion. Sedentary activities, such as sleeping, sitting, reading, etc. will NOT work.

Present verb forms such as "walks" ( She Walks in Shadows ) or "walk" (At Night We Walk in Circles) and present continuous forms such as "walking" (Walking After Midnight) work. Past tense verb forms such as "walked" DO NOT work.

Other examples of action verbs you can use include but are not limited to, the following words and their allowed verb forms: Run, jump, swim, hop, play, dance, hike, etc.

Option 2. Armchair Travel
I did not get to go on the trips I had planned this summer, but I visited a lot of places through books. I have been traveling the world through books for several years and have circled the globe a few times without leaving my chair.

Read a book I have read in my past travels that fits SRC guidelines. My list can be found here. Choose a book found in posts 2-13. You may instead choose to read a book by an author found in posts 14-16. REQUIRED: Identify the post number in which your title or author is found.

Option 3. Variations in Theme.
Before all this mess started I chose Weezer’s “Feels Like Summer” as my summer theme song. My theme song was quickly replaced with “Believer” by Imagine Dragons with the lyrics “Pain! You made me a, you made me a believer, believer.” I honestly thought the title to this song was “Pain” for the longest time.

Read a book with a title that describes your summer or current state of affairs. The title can range anywhere from a one-word title to a complete sentence. REQUIRED: Briefly explain how this title applies to you.

Option 4: Healing and Recovery
One “good” thing about my injury is that I am able to see things from the patient’s perspective instead of just that of the health-care provider. I have also learned many new things about the medical field that I didn’t know before.

Read a book found in the first 5 pages of the Medicine and Literature list. REQUIRED: State the list page and number of the book.

Option 5: KHP, or Kitty Healing Powers
Much research has gone into the benefits of animals in the healing process. My cat has faithfully stayed by my side this summer. I believe his presence has made a lot of difference in my healing process.

Read a book either with a picture of a cat on the cover or with the stand-alone word “cat” found in the title or subtitle. Plurals and possessives work but no other variations. REQUIRED: If using a picture, include the book cover in your post.

Option 6: Physical Therapy
After surgery, I thought the pain would soon become a thing of the past, as with other surgeries I had in the past. Wrong! A “perk” of orthopedic surgery is aggressive physical therapy. It is extremely helpful and often extremely painful.

Read a book by an author whose first and last initials can be found in PHYSICAL THERAPY. Middle name initials may be ignored. Letters may only be used as often as they appear. Spaces determine names. One qualifying author in a work by multiple contributors works.

Bryony (bryony46) | 350 comments Not a task question, but I just wanted to wish you a speedy recovery.

Also, your around the world list is amazing. I started my own read around the world challenge this year and you've given me so much inspiration for some of the countries I'd found it difficult to choose a book for. Thank you!

Jayme(theghostreader) (jaymetheghostreader) | 3040 comments I am sorry to hear you couldn't travel. I hope you recover quickly.

Diana Keener | 798 comments Diane - what a shame that your plans were shattered like this. Hang in there, physical therapy is no fun but I hope you get healed and back in shape as quickly as possible. And I agree your around the world list is amazing.

A quick task question - would using your arms be enough for Option 1. I am thinking of Stir: My Broken Brain and the Meals That Brought Me Home

Terri FL (territhemuse) | 615 comments I am very impressed by your global list! I have been somewhat keeping track of mine as well, but, it's not anywhere near as comprehensive. I keep getting stuck on what to pick for Andorra. And, I've even been there!

Thank you for your kind words. I am sorry, but the activity needs to use both arms and legs, so stir will not work.

Unfortunately, singing does not require the use of the limbs.

I'll accept that. You can touch things with all of your limbs.

Diane | 741 comments Just a further clarification for Option 1. The action verb must either involve your arms and legs (together) or your entire body. If it is something you can do while sitting or laying down, it won't work.

Also I am so impressed by your list of countries visited. Even Easter Island!

My question is about option 1, action verb. Will this book count for that?

Also, I hope you continue to feel better! That's a really sucky thing to happen just before the summer!

Thanks for the well wishes!

Unfortunately seeking does not require movement of the arms and legs, so it will not work.

message 27: by Siobhan (new)

Siobhan J | 409 comments I was obviously just thinking of my method of seeking, which involves flailing my whole body around wildly until I find the thing. XD Thank you anyway, I shall keep looking!

message 28: by Diane (new)

Diane | 741 comments Wayne wrote: "I can't even find your Easter Island author, and I tried Amazon! "

The book used to be available on Kindle. It is available in PB and HB on Amazon (US).

Wayne wrote: "BTW, you can add Rohinton Mistry and M.G. Vassanji to your Canada list. Just sayin'"

So true. I think there are several others, as well.

Andy Plonka (plonkaac) | 4207 comments Would She Rides Shotgun work? If you are riding a horse or a bike, you are certainly using both arms and legs, though riding in a car or plane does take much movement. Baring that how about Swimming in the Sink: An Episode of the Heart? Swimming requires movement and this one involves physical therapy as well.

The Art of Racing in the Rain

Thanks!

Jessica (bookwrm526) | 2106 comments Sorry to hear about your injury, and I hope you heal completely and as quickly as possible!

I have a question about option #2. For Haiti, you have the author Edwidge Danticat listed. Could I use Haiti Noir, which she edited and wrote a short story for? Most of the 18 authors in the volume were born in Haiti as well.

Thanks!

Book Concierge (tessabookconcierge) | 4447 comments Wondering if this would work for Option 3: Variations in a Theme
The Whole Town's Talking
I am on the board of my local library and we have started town meetings about renovation vs building a new facility. Definitely has all the board members talking, as well as the citizen focus groups, newspaper articles, letters to the editor, etc. (And I just got off the phone with one of the village trustees .... in preparation for our board meeting tomorrow morning ...) Sometimes I feel ALL we do is talk about this .....but I digress.
