Female heroine & Natural character development in an UF/HF setting

It's too often that female urban fantasy heroines go from being mostly average in mindset and physical ability to overpowered ass kickers within the span of a 400 page novel.
A three week training session with some legendary warrior should only be the beginning of the journey.

The Hollows series with Rachel Morgan is a good example of a heroine with natural character development, in my opinion.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.
