I’ve been doing the combined reading using Boiled Leathers recommended order

Hmm I didn’t bring my copy of aDance with Dragons along with me ... do you really need to follow the recommended order to understand what’s going on?

No but both books have things taking place at the same time so it’s a smoother read combined BUT if this is your first time then maybe stick to reading them individually.

I used the Boiled Leather one for reread. For first read, both seem to be recommended.

Currently on page 207 on Kraken’s Daughter

So far pretty straightforward continuation of the previous book. Missing (view spoiler)[Tyrion, Bran’s POVs but that’s alright. (hide spoiler)] Maybe reading it according to the recommended order would be perfect, but I don’t feel like I’m missing stuff so far.

Brienne
(view spoiler)[I truly hope by some fortunate happenstance, she gets to complete her mission before she dies. We know where Sansa is, but I don’t know how she could figure it out with the minimal amount of clues that she’s had so far. Definitely a pretty smooth scheme from Littlefinger.

(view spoiler)[what a poor pitch by Asha. I wouldn’t wanna follow her too. She just offered so little. It’s little surprise that eventually Euron took the kingship, after offering a dream. I’ve no idea what this would mean for the realm. Euron a brand new character.

Btw, I don’t remember what happened to Theon exactly in the book. I’m afraid I mixed it up with the tv series. Anybody can help me refresh my memory? I remember last he’s helped by the Bolton bastard in burning Winterfell. Was he captured and betrayed ... (hide spoiler)]

The Martells
(view spoiler)[Suddenly, we’ve got a bunch of female characters wanting to rule their respective kingdoms. Again, I don’t think we’ve been provided much with the internal politics of House Martell. But, though Prince Doran seemed weak, he seemed to be in a pretty strong position politically. I’ve no idea why Princess Adrianne seemed to want to basically usurp her father’s powers ... just a case of ambitious daughter or there something more ... (hide spoiler)]

Cersei
(view spoiler)[oh, dear. Cersei seemed so smart but also so insecure that she couldn’t stand not having loyalty amongst her counselors. The best leader should listen to multiple opinions, including those who hold completely different opinions. She’d been lucky with the circumstances (Stannis and Renly hating each other). I wish her luck would run out ... tragically lol. (hide spoiler)]

Theon (view spoiler)[ Some of Stark's men were going to attack Winterfell but Theon has sent Reek to convince Bolton’s men to come help and then Reek revealed he was Ramsay and I think knocked Theon and took him captive and you hear in Storm of Swords that Ramsay is flaring Theon. (hide spoiler)]

Probably the weakest book in the series so far, just because there are far fewer battles and deaths. Especially after what happened in the previous book. Some intriguing future plot lines for several characters to set up for future events.

I’m definitely looking forward to ADWD, as we’ll get to see my fave characters again.

Jaime (view spoiler)[I must’ve read too much between the lines lol. But, I’m surprised that he appeared to refuse to go back to Kings Landing to save Cersei. But, yeah, Cersei had it coming. I dunno if her worse mistake was trying to frame Maergery and risking the wrath of th Tyrells, or allowing a fanatic religious group to arm itself.

Regarding the allegation itself, I’m not sure if it’s really true that she’s not a maiden any longer, or if it’s a counter-scheme from Maergery or Pycelle? Pycelle seems to take over the power quite swiftly (pun intended). Or was it Taena’s work?

My other wild alternative theory : she had done it with Joffrey. (hide spoiler)]

Alayne
(view spoiler)[I was half expecting Littlefinger to somehow kill Robert Arryn while they’re descending the Vale. I’m a bit surprised that Petyr arranged Sansa’s betrothal to Ser Hardyng. I’d expected him to keep Sansa for himself and adding Protector of Winterfell to his title. But, I guess Littlefinger was much smarter than that naked of a power grab. (hide spoiler)]

Princess Arianne

Brienne
(view spoiler)[Who’s the Hound that attacked Brienne at the Inn? Rorge?

And what happened with Brienne at the end? The Catelyn that we knew didn’t seem to be that cruel. Or did the resurrection magic performed by Thoros somehow corrupted her soul? But this Catelyn didn’t seem to retain any of her living memories. Unlike Lord Beric in the previous book. Although, he did say everytime he died and got resurrected, he lost more and more of his soul.

I wonder if this would become a desperate technique to be used against the Others. They both appeared to have some similarities : resurrecting the dead. (hide spoiler)]

Arya
(view spoiler)[I continue to root for her. Out of all the Starks and the good guys, she appeared to have the toughest road. But, her experiences have been so interesting. I’m sure there would be a big reveal on why she had to go through all these weird conversations and lessons with the Kindly Man at the Temple of the Many Faced Gods.

Btw, that was an awesome scene at the end where she revealed she killed Dorean. I had to double back to make sure I didn’t miss it. I didn’t. I’d wondered why she was giving the boots though. That’s just superbly done by GRRM. I loved her response to the Kindly Man. (hide spoiler)]
