Juliebean (juliebean512) | 145 comments Hi - if this isn't allowed, mod, feel free to delete it.

I don't know if I'm the only person who does this but I buy a lot of Kindle books when they're on sale, but then they collect e-dust, especially when I'm in a 're-reading favorites' type of mood.

Is there a way to look at my nearly 600 books and filter them by shelves? Or look at a category and find out which ones I own?

For instance, I never would have thought of Mrs. Pollifax or Tommy and Tuppence in the espionage category, but of course they are. And so I wondered how many other gems of the categories I have left. So how could I find out which of my books are "written by a person of color", etc? (Other than going through them one by one.)

Maybe next year I'll try to do all categories with only books I already own!

I have wondered the same thing lately. Besides being in this group, I recently joined the Around the Year in 52 Books group, and we're currently making our challenge list for next year. As we go through each round and end up with the top few to add to the list, I'm trying to go ahead and get started listing possible books, but it's such a long and difficult process! I have to go book by book and look them up if it's not obvious from the title or cover. It would be great to have different ways to organize our Kindle shelves than just by author, title or when they were purchased. I hope somebody has some tips!

Jackie | 734 comments Well, I can *sort of* help you with the books you own issue. If you go to your review of a book, there is a checkbox at the bottom to mark if you own a copy of it. In the list view of your books, you can go to settings and add a column to show whether or not you own it. Setting this up for all 600+ books in your collection would probably be tedious at best.

message 4: by Malaraa (new)

Malaraa You want to sort the way they appear on your kindle/kindle app, yes?

On my fire, and I think on my old classic kindle, there are collections you can make. Making collections for all the categories in a challenge would be a lot of work, but you could, in theory. Or at least some of the ones that are most important to you or most common in the challenges you do.

Some people also use shelves to track sub categories on Goodreads, so you could have a owned-unread shelf, and look at the books on that to see what is also on author-poc shelf, or spies shelf and so on.

All the ways are going to take a fair amount of set up, I'm afraid. No way around that.

Juliebean (juliebean512) | 145 comments Yeah, that's what I was afraid of. What I was really hoping was that somehow I could sort them here on goodreads - or perhaps search out a shelf (story within story, for instance) and it could tell me what I already own in that category. I figured it was wishful thinking - but it would be a nice feature.

I love Kindle, except for this very annoying feature! I use the Kindle app on my iPad and phone (I have an old Kindle Fire, but it's so old and been idle so long that it won't take a charge any more - so, I effectively do not have a Kindle). I cannot figure out how to organize all my ebooks. There really does not seem to be a way. I can't even sort them into "read" and "not yet read" which seems like it should have been an obvious feature for Amazon to add long ago. I had hoped, when Amazon acquired Goodreads, that they would add a sort of GR bookshelf feature to the Kindle app, but so far no dice.

I've created a Goodreads shelf for my ebooks that I haven't read yet, so I can at least look at them that way. I don't have as many as you do!

Tami (tamidale) You can sort your books--either from the kindle or from your Amazon account page. On Amazon, go to manage my content and devices and pull up your kindle books. On the left of the book title there are 2 boxes. Click the one nearest the title (the right) and a window will come up with options. Click on collections and add the title to whatever collection you like (read, thriller, etc).
Also at the top of the list to the right of author, etc. is Collections and you can do it from there as well. Clear as mud?

From the Kindle on your home page, go to my library. Click on the top right box with the three dots and go down to Create New Collection. After creating your desired collections go back to my Library (make sure it says all items at the top) and click on that. Select Collections (very bottom) and all your books will come up and you check each one you would like to add.

Hope this makes sense.

Kathy | 3 comments I have also wondered if there is any way to delete the books I have read and will not read again, or the books I started and decided I would never read. I love my Kindle but it is not organizational friendly!

message 9: by Tami (new)

Tami (tamidale) Yes! Again go to your amazon kindle account, under content and devices and pull up your book list. In the box nearest the title, click on it and there will be an option to delete.

Thanks, Tami. Yes, I think sorting them on the website will be quicker. I just don't think it will be possible to do what I really want to do - which is discover their categories I don't already know. (Like unreliable narrator, written by a woman, book about travel, etc).

I suppose that's a very niche market for someone like me who has a ton of books on her e-shelves but also does book challenges.

message 12: by Lynn Renee (new)

Lynn Renee | 31 comments I had to call Kindle customer service today and found out that I have 11,600 books on my Kindle. I've been trying to redo my shelves on Goodreads, there is no way to sort all those though. I'm just working with On Deck, Next Up, and Future Reads. That way I'm working with books as I go. If I had understood how to sort my books with Goodreads when I joined it wouldn't be so bad.

I don't know which Kindle you have, but my Paperwhite allows me to do it from the main screen. I just press on the cover thumbnail until a pop-up screen offering me choices (add to collection, etc) comes up and "delete from reader" is one of the options.

Hope that helps.

"Remove from device" is an option when you hold down over the title in the app, also. But "remove from device" does not delete the title from your Kindle library, you can't do that from the app. And ... something I had been ignoring ... there IS an "add to collection" option when you do the hold-down-menu thing. I just didn't understand that a "collection" is the same as a GR "bookshelf"!!!! So does this mean that I can FINALLY start sorting my books into "read" and "tbr"?! yay!

I'm not sure why Amazon makes this stuff so hard to find. I LOVE going back to my highlights on my Amazon/Kindle account (kindle.amazon.com), but for years I didn't know that option was there. It's just not obvious.

Magda Fourie Stegmann | 1 comments Hi. I have an odd question. Does anyone know why my reading status show a negative or zero while I'm in fact reading one?

That sounds like a Goodreads glitch. I just looked at your profile, and sure enough it shows "currently reading (0)" but also "Magda is currently reading Die Erflating" and when I click on your "currently reading" shelf it DOES show Die Erflating, and also says "0."

If you really want an answer to that mystery, you probably need to email Goodreads support. (I've done this a few times, they are always friendly, and usually helpful.)

Tracy (tracyisreading) | 608 comments You can remove books from your device I believe. Also, if you go on Amazon and go into your kindle content you can archive all the books you've read. So much work.

I started to sort mine into collections last year but I have so many that I gave up. Im approaching 1000 books on my Kindle!!!!

There is also a way to pull all of your kindle books onto your GoodReads shelf since Amazon now owns everything. I haven't done it because it will clog up all my friends feeds :/

message 18: by Theresa (new)

Theresa | 2377 comments Wow Tami- I never knew that about being able to sort into collections in Kindle! I have both Nook (the Barnes & Noble) app and Kindle app and one of the things I absolutely love about Nook is that you can easily sort all your ebooks into shelves whether from the app or on the computer. In fact, most of my ebooks are in the Nook app, not Kindle, because I find organizing my library on Nook so much easier, more naturally set up, and accessible. Nook also has an archive feature that allows you to remove the book from your immediate library but still have it readily accessible from app or computer.

I also find that unless I'm sitting at my desktop computer working on the Kindle content and device manager, it's incredibly slow, unbelievably and frustratingly slow, and tends to jump around a bit as all the advertising slowly downloads.

Raquel (Silver Valkyrie Reads) | 896 comments I just started using the collections feature on Kindle about a month ago! I'm not using it consistently when I add new books though, so I'm going to have to through a whole batch again at some point...

So far I'm just using the collections to easily sort between read, TBR and 'not going to read'. (My husband and I share kindle libraries, so sometimes books he's reading for work and such show up on mine.) I also have a collection for challenge reads for this year, partly so I didn't accidentally read them early.

This probably doesn't help anyone else, but this is the way I track everything:

Only books I own and want to read go on my goodreads TBR. (Kindle books, or even print books purchases through amazon are super easy to batch add here: https://www.goodreads.com/amazon_purc...)

Everything else goes on an Amazon wish list so I can really easily track price changes (I use the 'comments' to mark if it's something not available through the library, and prioritize buying those if I'm undecided about whether to buy or not.)

Then, if I go to a goodreads list, it shows what I have marked as 'want to read' and I know those are ones I already own.

Giveaways throw off the system a little bit, but if I enter a giveaway I also add it to a shelf named 'giveaway' and every couple of weeks I go through and delete ones from giveaways that are over and I didn't win.

I'm the same, my Goodreads TBR is only what I have and I use Amazon wishlists to track other books I want to read.

My collection use is a bit sporadic. Every now and then I go and tidy it up, mainly into "read" and genre folders. Then I forget where I put them anyway!

Tracy, or anybody who has tons of books on their kindle that they want to pull over to GR in one go,

If you want to do that without spamming all your followers, go into your account settings on GR, go to Feeds, and then uncheck the box next to add a book to your shelves. Then go over to amazon and do the syncing. When you're done, you can go back into settings and recheck the box if you so desire. No giant update for all of your people, and you get your book list how you want it.
