30-day Challenge! - Day 27: Reading gear! What do you use for a bookmark?

I have in mind a question for the next one. Any suggestions from anyone for the last two? I don't want to leave on the table a great question that I just failed to think of :D

ahh, I forgot to answer! I use whatever's handy. Receipts, yes, postcards, free library bookmarks, napkins, you name it :p. No fancy/special one tho.

I can't stand turning the edge of a page to mark my place.

I especially like receipts because if I re-read the book later they sometimes remind me of what I was doing when I read the book the first time.
It's always fun getting someone else's random bookmarks too. I've found anything from pressed and dried leaves to 50 year old love letters in some of my used books.

That happened to me last month! Mary Stewart's The Crystal Cave arrived from the library with a very sweet love letter, encouraging someone on their new job, and wishing them success.
I felt bad throwing it out! But, I figured, it wouldn't do any good to return it with the book, because it hadn't been checked out when I requested a hold on it, so whoever left it in there last, hadn't *just* returned it, so they'd have had time to get it back already.

Maybe reading it will make them smile too.

Dollar bills, birthday cards (I don't know what else to do with those), book marks from friends, cards with quotes or inspirational thoughts, free book store book marks.
I have several books opened and began, so I need several book marks. Never do I turn the page down.
And of course the Kindle just remembers where I am without much help from me.

I only use a small ammount of my collected bookmarks, simply because some of them are way too big to fit into any normal sized book the way I want them to fit. Also a few special bookmarks, which I don't want to lose, are not in use (just because I lost one of them by using it). Most of the bookmarks I own I've gotten free from various places and only some are storebought.

I like it. :D
I ALWAYS use a bookmark. I have built up quite the collection of them, and if I don't have one within reach, I use a Kleenex, business card, paperclip, or something of that nature. I am a firm believer in NOT dog-earing pages. As to a favourite, I don't have one. I switch them up every few books. :)

Nowadays I mainly use magnetic bookmarks, I have seven at the moment. (Though I would need only about four but the second set was so cute.) And a couple of ordinary ones with kitties or something.
Then I have one leather cover for paperbacks and it includes a ribbon, very nice for books you might want to carry around (includes an elastic band). Also I have one bookmark with an elastic band, too. I used it while interrailing because it kept the book closed in the backpack but I don't really use it now. And... also a couple that are made of medal and go over the back of the book. I would mainly use those for books I shelf for some reason because it shows they haven't been finished or something.

For hardbacks I use whatever is at hand - mostly some scrap of paper.
Reading through your comments here made me think I should invest in some nicer bookmarks :)

I prefer receipts.

I just joined the Challenge and want to respond one day at a time, but could not resist on this topic. I am afraid that bookmarks have become something of a ritual for me. I like for the colors to match the cover, or for it to make sense thematically - for instance Anne of Green Gables and Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm must have a floral theme. Snow Falling on Cedars of course has a snowy Christmas card bookmark.
Since I am a teacher and I have bulletin board borders available, I sometimes use a small odd bit for a book mark. This has become a sentimental thing for me. I will come across an old piece of border from a previous year's classroom. There are also bookmarks galore in our school library, but I prefer the cards. I usually remember who sent the card even without the writing. Sometimes I buy a box of cards pretending that I will send them to friends but knowing there will be several bookmarks made from them. And, final embarrassing admission, I sometimes use my special wavy scissors when cutting the card edges. I have even decided on which book to read next based upon available materials for bookmarks!
Last thing - once a bookmark is in a book, that is the bookmark's home. Books I have read keep their bookmarks. New books get new bookmarks.

I cannot picture how a magnetic bookmark would work. I guess it has two parts: one for the front of the page and one for the back? They aren't bulky?
I use cards because as I am reading I pull the card down the page to keep my eyes on the correct line. It is an old speed reading technique. - of course there is an internet entry about it LOL

I think sticky notes are great! I hand out sticky notes to the children (third grade) to use as bookmarks when they are reading library or classroom books.

This is so cool. I have never heard of anyone doing an origami corner like this.

Lynn, it's lovely how you've made this into a ritual and brought your teacher's eye and tools to it. Inspiring!
I have some magnetic bookmarks that are pretty but too heavy, and feel too harsh. I like thin paper but the library slip is too thin (picky picky).
I have a set of favorite bookmarks with a variety of designs that I keep in an Edgar Allen Poe mug: an embroidered one my mom gave me as a kid, some from favorite bookstores, gifts from friends, even two I found in library books (is that stealing?).
I too like to match them with the read or my mood (or yes, sometimes the color of the cover), and it's a fun part of the ritual of beginning a new book.

Do you have a favorite, beautiful bookmark? Do you grab whatever's handy? Do you use freebies from the bookstore or library? Do you .... DOG-EAR YOUR BOOK!?
Ereader users have this easy. They point and save. :D. But, how do you mark your place in your treebooks?
Who wants to play!
