MK (wisny) | 2579 comments Day 27: Reading gear! What do you use for a bookmark?

Do you have a favorite, beautiful bookmark? Do you grab whatever's handy? Do you use freebies from the bookstore or library? Do you .... DOG-EAR YOUR BOOK!?

Ereader users have this easy. They point and save. :D. But, how do you mark your place in your treebooks?

Who wants to play!

MK (wisny) | 2579 comments ps - Only three more left until 30 questions are reached!!

I have in mind a question for the next one. Any suggestions from anyone for the last two? I don't want to leave on the table a great question that I just failed to think of :D

ahh, I forgot to answer! I use whatever's handy. Receipts, yes, postcards, free library bookmarks, napkins, you name it :p. No fancy/special one tho.

Andrea AKA Catsos Person (catsosperson) | 1685 comments I use a real book mark or a postcard. I pick them up wherever I see them-- mostly at the library. Sometimes if I visit a museum with a gift shop, I'll buy a book mark bec they are so pretty.

I can't stand turning the edge of a page to mark my place.

message 6: by Melanti (new)

Melanti | 1894 comments Whatever is handy. A receipt, a scrap of paper, business card, a dollar bill, etc. I tend to leave the book marks in the book when I'm done (unless it's money, of course, or unless the book is from the library)

I especially like receipts because if I re-read the book later they sometimes remind me of what I was doing when I read the book the first time.

It's always fun getting someone else's random bookmarks too. I've found anything from pressed and dried leaves to 50 year old love letters in some of my used books.

That happened to me last month! Mary Stewart's The Crystal Cave arrived from the library with a very sweet love letter, encouraging someone on their new job, and wishing them success.

I felt bad throwing it out! But, I figured, it wouldn't do any good to return it with the book, because it hadn't been checked out when I requested a hold on it, so whoever left it in there last, hadn't *just* returned it, so they'd have had time to get it back already.

message 8: by Alissa (new)

Alissa Patrick (apatrick12211) Currently im using sticky notes. i used to have a bookmark that you enclosed over the page you stopped at and there were magnets on the bottom and came together so it held and you kept your place... but i think i accidentally donated that to the libary lol

message 9: by Melanti (new)

Melanti | 1894 comments I got the love letter from a book off the clearance rack at an old bookstore. There wasn't a name or address on the letter other than a first name, no inscription on the title page, nada. Not even a date on the letter. I'm guessing it was about as old as the book because it was so browned and brittle, but there's no way of knowing. So since I couldn't return it to the owner, I just tucked it back in the book when I was done and put it back on my bookshelf for the next reader to find.

Maybe reading it will make them smile too.

message 10: by MK (new)

MK (wisny) | 2579 comments Ohh, fun, Alissa! Melanti, that's what I should have done. I should have put the letter back in. bummer

Gavin (thewalkingdude) | 218 comments I've started using a plastic butterfly-shaped fridge magnet.

message 12: by Rachel (new)

Rachel Day 27 entry: I use a bookmark that I made during an arts and craft fun night with friends. However, if I am reading a library book, I use the library receipt. It helps me remember when my books are due back.

Katy (kathy_h) | 9530 comments Mod
Dollar bills, birthday cards (I don't know what else to do with those), book marks from friends, cards with quotes or inspirational thoughts, free book store book marks.

I have several books opened and began, so I need several book marks. Never do I turn the page down.

And of course the Kindle just remembers where I am without much help from me.

message 14: by Maarit (last edited Jun 23, 2014 12:07AM) (new)

Maarit | 240 comments I collect bookmarks and I've putted all of them into this vase from which I choose the bookmark best fitting to the book I'm reading at the time. By this I mean the size of the book, does it need small or big bookmark, because small bookmarks in a big book tend to get lost. I also look at the design of the bookmark, if it fits to the books theme :D.

I only use a small ammount of my collected bookmarks, simply because some of them are way too big to fit into any normal sized book the way I want them to fit. Also a few special bookmarks, which I don't want to lose, are not in use (just because I lost one of them by using it). Most of the bookmarks I own I've gotten free from various places and only some are storebought.

message 15: by Kelly B (new)

Kelly B (kellybey) | 233 comments My daughters made me bookmarks with their pictures on them when they were in second grade, so I use those. I alternate the bookmarks, switching them each time I start a new book.

MK (wisny) | 2579 comments ahhh, the vase sounds lovely, Maarit! :)

message 18: by Kim (new)

Kim (whatkimreads) I bought this magnetic bookmark (so it doesn't fall out in your purse or something) and it has this sort of pin-up style picture of a woman lying in bed and it says something like: It must be so exhausting to be fabulous all the time!

I like it. :D

message 19: by [deleted user] (new)

I ALWAYS use a bookmark. I have built up quite the collection of them, and if I don't have one within reach, I use a Kleenex, business card, paperclip, or something of that nature. I am a firm believer in NOT dog-earing pages. As to a favourite, I don't have one. I switch them up every few books. :)

message 20: by Tytti (new)

Tytti | 1010 comments I used to use whatever was handy, though there were a couple that were especially good for it.

Nowadays I mainly use magnetic bookmarks, I have seven at the moment. (Though I would need only about four but the second set was so cute.) And a couple of ordinary ones with kitties or something.

Then I have one leather cover for paperbacks and it includes a ribbon, very nice for books you might want to carry around (includes an elastic band). Also I have one bookmark with an elastic band, too. I used it while interrailing because it kept the book closed in the backpack but I don't really use it now. And... also a couple that are made of medal and go over the back of the book. I would mainly use those for books I shelf for some reason because it shows they haven't been finished or something.

message 21: by Hilary (new)

Hilary (agapoyesoun) | 176 comments I have so many books on the go at one time that I run out of proper bookmarks. I then use some little inspirational card that a friend has sent me or receipts. I like the idea of postcards though.

message 22: by Sonja (new)

Sonja (sonjareadsandwonders) I collect bookmarks from places that I visit, so I have tons of them. Also, when family members or friends go on a holiday I always ask for bookmarks as souvenirs :D. My favourite bookmark is a magnetic one that I bought in the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam. It's very beautiful. It has the Garden with Courting Couples on it.

message 23: by Kat (new)

Kat I dog-ear my paperbacks. But since I don't like to sell or give away my paperbacks, that's alright because I keep them and nobody else has to put up with the dog ears.

For hardbacks I use whatever is at hand - mostly some scrap of paper.

Reading through your comments here made me think I should invest in some nicer bookmarks :)

message 24: by Joseph (new)

Joseph Fountain | 296 comments Pre-ebook....I used a genuine bookmark. Don't know when, where I picked it up, but it has a story about the trojan horse on it. At other times, whatever I can find. I once used a $5 bill, and then forgot about it. Stumbled upon it years later. It'd be a better story had it been a $100 bill.

message 25: by Abbey (new)

Abbey I use my library slip, a little card that says what being a friend is about, and a picture of a friend and I! I don't know why I have three haha I just do

message 26: by Jenn (last edited Dec 05, 2016 04:45PM) (new)

Jenn (ace-geek) I actually sort of collect bookmarks, but more often than not I get my books from the library. I usually just fold the library receipt into a little triangle sort of like a newspaper hat and fit it over the corner of the page.

message 27: by Terris (new)

Terris | 4387 comments I kind of collect bookmarks also. And I tend to want the bookmark to match the book I'm reading! I've tried the magnetic bookmarks and the corner-of-the-page bookmarks, but I just like a plain old bookmark that I can stick between the pages :)

message 28: by Loretta (new)

Loretta | 2200 comments It depends. If it's a library book I usually use whatever is around (business cards, Mass cards, blow ins from magazines, etc.). If it's a hardcover book that I own then I use the book cover as a book marker! :)

Maggie the Muskoka Library Mouse (mcurry1990) I have a wide array of bookmarks. Some are beautiful, some are sentimental, some are business cards, and then some are simply receipts that are close to hand. I never dog-ear pages.

Rosemarie | 1567 comments Maggie, I have a wide variety of bookmarks too, including those that used to belong to my daughters when they were small. Both are parents now, so I have had them for a long time.

message 40: by Patty (new)

Patty I have a friend who brings back bookmarks from her travels. However, some are so thick, they fall out. I also tend to leave them in the book I’ve just finished, or somewhere around the house.

I prefer receipts.

message 41: by Allison (last edited Jun 09, 2019 08:02AM) (new)

Allison | 55 comments I have a large collection of BEAUTIFUL bookmarks but I don’t want to use them lol. Especially since most of my books come from the library. So I use worn out free bookmarks the library provided at one point for special programs and such. The one I’m using now is geared towards early readers because I took it from my nephew’s grab bag they gave out as a summer reading promotion.

message 42: by Tara (new)

Tara | 71 comments I mostly use magnetic bookmarks--they come in a lot of fun designs. I also have a handful of free bookmarks acquired from various bookstores that I will use if I run out of magnetic ones, or if the pages are too delicate.

I just joined the Challenge and want to respond one day at a time, but could not resist on this topic. I am afraid that bookmarks have become something of a ritual for me. I like for the colors to match the cover, or for it to make sense thematically - for instance Anne of Green Gables and Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm must have a floral theme. Snow Falling on Cedars of course has a snowy Christmas card bookmark.

Since I am a teacher and I have bulletin board borders available, I sometimes use a small odd bit for a book mark. This has become a sentimental thing for me. I will come across an old piece of border from a previous year's classroom. There are also bookmarks galore in our school library, but I prefer the cards. I usually remember who sent the card even without the writing. Sometimes I buy a box of cards pretending that I will send them to friends but knowing there will be several bookmarks made from them. And, final embarrassing admission, I sometimes use my special wavy scissors when cutting the card edges. I have even decided on which book to read next based upon available materials for bookmarks!

Last thing - once a bookmark is in a book, that is the bookmark's home. Books I have read keep their bookmarks. New books get new bookmarks.

I cannot picture how a magnetic bookmark would work. I guess it has two parts: one for the front of the page and one for the back? They aren't bulky?

I use cards because as I am reading I pull the card down the page to keep my eyes on the correct line. It is an old speed reading technique. - of course there is an internet entry about it LOL

I think sticky notes are great! I hand out sticky notes to the children (third grade) to use as bookmarks when they are reading library or classroom books.

Lynn, it's lovely how you've made this into a ritual and brought your teacher's eye and tools to it. Inspiring!

I have some magnetic bookmarks that are pretty but too heavy, and feel too harsh. I like thin paper but the library slip is too thin (picky picky).

I have a set of favorite bookmarks with a variety of designs that I keep in an Edgar Allen Poe mug: an embroidered one my mom gave me as a kid, some from favorite bookstores, gifts from friends, even two I found in library books (is that stealing?).

I too like to match them with the read or my mood (or yes, sometimes the color of the cover), and it's a fun part of the ritual of beginning a new book.

message 49: by Luke (new)

Luke (korrick) Receipts. Easiest way to keep track of notable places/quotes I wish to refer to for my reviews. Easily acquirable, too.

message 50: by Patty (new)

Patty I recently got a book from the library that had a double-magnet narwhal bookmark. I thought of it as a a special gift just for me❣️It is now my favorite and only bookmark.
