April (booksandwine) | 23 comments I think whatever makes it easier for people sounds like a good thing. Also, I love the Read This With Me thread, too bad other groups don't have it :-D

Yes! I know. And, as if I needed one, it's another reason to go book shopping! MWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

I also opened a challenge thread for ideas, if anyone is interested. I'd like to keep it small, but it should be fun if we do one, and it would maybe allow people to read something they might not have tried before.

message 57: by April (new)

April (booksandwine) | 23 comments Yeah I'm going to need challenge rehab after Cynthia's summer challenge, since it's so f-ing huge. I'm thinking about just focusing on the WT challenge until the HF challenge starts. :-D

Good decision!

JG (Introverted Reader) Minion Keeper? Please tell me you keep them in cookies. And books. And coffee.

message 60: by Becky, Moddess (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) | 3034 comments Mod
Sure. All of those things. But mainly in jars. ;)

JG (Introverted Reader) Do they glow for you?

message 62: by Becky, Moddess (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) | 3034 comments Mod
No. But I do try to get them to by shaking them a lot. *sigh*

JG (Introverted Reader) That would explain some things... :-)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) | 3034 comments Mod
Haha! That it does. :) Anyway, work in the morning... I should get to bed. Goodnight!

message 67: by Misty (new)

Misty | 20 comments I don't know if this has been asked, and I don't read historical often enough to know how strict people are about it all, but in this group, are we distinguishing between historical = written by someone about the past vs. historical = written by someone in the past about their time (ie historical to us, not to them. Like Jane Austen or Edith Wharton) I know this wouldn't technically be historical, but for us it is...
Does this make me a historical dunce?

message 68: by Becky, Moddess (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) | 3034 comments Mod
I think for me... I'm willing to allow anything in which the story in the book takes place at least 30 years (roughly) before the book was written.

For instance, I'd consider The Kite Runner and A Thousand Splendid Suns to be HF, because they chronicle Afghanistan's history, starting in the late 60's, early 70's...

Also, I Know This Much Is True, which has historical parts in a mostly-recent-to-contemporary book.

Does that help? I wanna be as flexible as possible. As long as it's not strictly contemporary, I think I'll take it. :)

Jon | 303 comments Misty wrote: "I don't know if this has been asked, and I don't read historical often enough to know how strict people are about it all, but in this group, are we distinguishing between historical = written by so..."

No im a dunce too on that front lol i think mistress Becky has ruled that a classic written in a period that is historical to us now, i.e regency/victorian, is not the same as historical fiction of a contemperorary person writing about that period,

Jon wrote: "Misty wrote: "I don't know if this has been asked, and I don't read historical often enough to know how strict people are about it all, but in this group, are we distinguishing between historical =..."

That would be correct. I think a 20-30 year historical time gap is enough, but if it was contemporary when written - or even set in the future, as in 1984, which of course is now in the past - then it's not allowed.

Everything else goes! :)

message 79: by Misty (new)

Misty | 20 comments Hey guys. Quick question. I am giving away a book on my blog that would probably appeal to people in this group since it's historical, but I didn't know if/where such postings would be allowed. Let me know!
Thanks!

message 80: by Allison (new)

Allison (inconceivably) hmm...good question Misty! Just something that hasn't come up yet I guess.

I'll leave it for the Big Cheese though.

message 81: by Becky, Moddess (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) | 3034 comments Mod
Ehh, I'm the Big Cheese now huh? *eye roll*

Misty, I don't have a problem with that. We know you're not spamming. Go ahead and post it in the Swap folder. I'll rename it Swap-A-Book/Giveaways.

Lyn (Readinghearts) (lsmeadows) Since I'm new and lost, can anyone tell me if we are planning a September Group Read and what it might be?

message 85: by Allison (new)

Allison (inconceivably) Lyn, we decided to start our group reads in the middle of the month instead of the beginning, so we just started reading Girl with a Pearl Earring on August 15th. :)

message 86: by Allison (new)

Allison (inconceivably) but you explained it so much better ;) I was lazy.

Lyn (Readinghearts) (lsmeadows) Thanks both, and I even have a copy of Girl with The Pearl Earring on my bookshelf. I'll see if I can get caught up!

message 88: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer (jennifertudor) | 266 comments For the past couple of days I haven't been able to get into The Girl With the Pearl Earring Discussion thread. It keeps freezing my computer but only on that thread. Is this happening to anyone else? It's happened on 2 different computers and it's driving me insane!

message 89: by Becky, Moddess (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) | 3034 comments Mod
It's because there are pictures in the thread. I'll have Al or Heather remove them (I'm at work, so it will freeze my computer too!).

Sorry about that J!

Jennifer (jennifertudor) | 266 comments Thanks to both you! I think I put the picture in the first place (not sure if there were more) but won't do it again!

message 94: by Becky, Moddess (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) | 3034 comments Mod
It has something to do with the fact that the pictures are linked outside of the GR server, and certain browsers, and certain connections and security. I dunno... But maybe Al could post something and make an authorized "Pictures Accepted" thread... Then if people want to post a picture, they can post it in the pic thread, and then just post the comment number in the normal thread so people know to look...

message 95: by Allison (new)

Allison (inconceivably) k I made one...Buh you can change it later, it probably sounds dumb. But since I'm supposed to be working too...lol.

message 99: by Laura (new)

Laura Hi guys, thanks to accept me as a member since I am also a big fan of HF. However, I have a good friend of mine, Misfit, who I know from Amazon (~3 y ago I think), before joining GR who will be delighted to be invited to this great group. She has a great blog on HF as well as many other friends, like Tanzanite for instance. Thanks once again!!

message 100: by Chrissie (new)

Chrissie Becky I would like to suggest that you as the moderator of the group explain to group members the value of using the "add book/author" button placed over the middle of the comment box when we group members mention either an author or a particular book. Your mentioning this would give it more weight. Perhaps it could be inclued in the message we all read when we enter the group.

By using this "button" it is quicker for readers to link to the books and the authors. A reader of the comment will no longer need to copy and paste or retype the title or author's name in the search box. In addition the book or author is listed in the links near the top right side of each thread. Another advantage is that on a particular book's page a link is given to the group's thread where the book/author is mentioned. This makes the group become more well known! New members means additional tips for all of us!

I love this group and that is why I thought I would come with this suggestion.

Another idea I have had is that the ratings of the group members who have all read a monthly read could be displayed. I do not know how to do this, but I think I saw it somewhere here at GR! This must be of interest b/c we are the people who adore HF, so it is important to know what we think of it. How could you add the ratings of people who have read a given book prior to it becoming a monthly read? Maybe that is more difficult. Maybe a member of the group could go to a particular place and add it themselves when they see the group has chosen to read a book one has previously read. Just an idea......

These are just some of my ideas. Forget them if they are silly!
