Allyra has an affinity for the past – memories, echoes or some combination of both. Barely surviving her first encounter with Revenants – the shadow creatures dwelling in the Between – Allyra is saved by the enigmatic Alex. She is forced to confront the fact that she is Gifted, something those closest to her had kept carefully hidden. As she begins to question whether her life has been a beautifully constructed lie, Alex becomes the one person she can trust, or can she?

The Gifted are rare, but Allyra is rare amongst them – an Elemental who can control not just one, but all four elements. Returning from the Between, she realizes her survival is tied to winning the deadly Elemental Trials, against Gifted opponents who will do anything to win. Even as she fights for her survival, Allyra struggles to learn whom she can trust in this new and lethal reality. She begins to understand that she is joining a game that started a long time ago, whose end might just lie with her affinity for the past.

From the get-go I really like the style of writing; it's well done c: I love that we're straight into the thick of things from the very first paragraph!

The way the main character is described is interesting, and I love the little insight into her abilities. An affinity for the past is a pretty interesting ability to have... though depending on the place it could be very very bad ._.

Fin Ch9: (view spoiler)[Okay, so the first chapter was pretty great, but honestly the further I read the more confused I get XD

What's the significance of Alex? He said that if you die in "real life" you die in the between and vice versa, and the Arch... mage(?) person has said that it's illegal to open gates and no ones opened one in a longggggg time, so how is Alex there? How long has he BEEN there? Does he (and/or his body) age like normal? Is he an elemental (was that mentioned?) or some other unlucky person? And why can he heal so well - is that his gift?

And meanwhile Jamie seems to have come across some kind of conspiracy with the five "big wigs". It honestly seems to me like the one in charge doesn't want to risk losing his position - especially considering he's really only a fill-in because there are "no elemental"... wonder how all that's going to go down with Jamie.

Epilogue: (view spoiler)[ Alex's POV. He wants Allyra back near him. I think this shows how he truly feels and I wonder what will happen in the next book. The action was great. I really liked how the story was told and that it had a slight Hunger Games feel to it as you have to survive in order to win your freedom. I give this a 4.3/5. (hide spoiler)]

(view spoiler)[The training sequence scene reminds me a little of a cross between Karate Kid and Eragon XD she's got a stick to start with (like Eragon) and is being trained for a 'higher purpose' by the sounds of things, but at the same time he's making her do random things that she doesn't know actually have meaning - teaching her to fight without explicitly stating that's what he's doing.

What was that with Mandla? A moment of lucidity in which he warned her not to trust Alex? Is Alex why he is the way he is? How did it happen? Is Alex perhaps somehow related to the "head honcho"? Was there a power struggle that ended with him banished to The Between?

Well that was slightly unexpected... though I'm not sure why. It was probably inevitable that they'd be attacked by Revenants at least once more before she left The Between. Good on her for sacrificing her advantage to help Mandla (and then Alex) though c: Wonder why Alex was apologising at the end though...

So did the "legendary weapon" save her life? And is there some negative that goes along with it that was the reason Alex apologised?

Okay, so I knew Alex was an elemental and all, and figured he was probably somewhat older than he looked considering the mind is separated from the body when you enter the between... but how the HELL is he still alive after 150 years? How long do elementals live for? He said that if your body dies so do you so HOW.

(view spoiler)[Yeah, "her Alex" is probably the same one that went a little power hungry :P Maybe Mandla is Alex' younger brother though? Or one of the elementals that followed him into The Between? They did seem to have some kind of personal connection after all... and as for there being more of the family line - maybe one of them fathered some illegitimate children, and Allyra is a descendant? Though considering she and Alex kissed I'd rather that not be the case... or maybe the current High "Elemental" is a descendant and that's why he's so power hungry!

What the heck... what kind of issue is there between Jason and Eva that attempted murder is apparently a viable solution? Did he kill someone in her family directly or indirectly? Does he have a price on his head? Is she a "woman scorned"?

Why the heck would an Ancient be in a random sick bag in the tunnels with a bunch of Cleaners? I definitely don't think that was simply a part of the trial. There's more to it than that - of that I'm sure :|
