Dun dun dunnnnnn... so maybe the elementals (and this Alex) DIDNT betray everyone, but were instead painted as the enemy by a corrupt council in order to maintain their control and power. So what is and isn't the truth? :|

Chapter 1 (view spoiler)[ I wasn't too sure about the opening. It's not my style. I'm hugely iffy on books that don't have actual character interaction dialogue until the second chapter. I was seriously not interested until the gate opened at the end of the first chapter. Normally I wouldn't give it that long before deciding I wanted to read it. If it doesn't have a strong opening page, I'm less likely to read it. (hide spoiler)]

Chapter 3 (view spoiler)[ It's officially insanely interesting and has pulled me in. Under normal circumstances, I wouldn't give a book this long to pull me in. First, I'm in love with the cover of this book! So pretty.
Second, I'm not as much in love with the writing style or the descriptions of the characters.
--This is very much a being told versus being shown situation. The author is using other characters to tell us what the MC is like but I felt like I haven't seen very much of her actual personality or what she's capable of.
--That author also seems fond of cliches. The description of Jamie as someone who's charming and good at making friends just made me roll my eyes.
--Then when the author is describing the Council members and their interviews, she uses the phrase "stereotypical Asian" to describe what one of the characters looks like and that another has drank too much per the traditions of his people. These descriptions are just really off-putting to me and seem rather insulting.
All of these descriptions of the characters worry me and make me wonder if all of the characters will be this one-dimensional.
And finally, I think that the plot could be really intriguing but I'm worried that I've seen too much of this kind of plot in YA.
