Never Let Me Go
question
Can someone please explain the meaning of this passage to me? (Chp14 Page 165 - Spoilers)

"They were relieved they wouldn't have to face, more starkly than ever, the notion which fascinated and nagged and scared them: this notion of theirs that there were all kinds of possibilities open to us Hailsham students that weren't open to them. I remember thinking then how different they actually were, Chrissie and Rodney, from the three of us." (Never Let Me Go, page 165)
I understand the point but not the context, I know C&R think of the Hailsham students as special and with extra opportunities , but why does Ruth finding (or not finding as the case is) her 'possible' show this? If they had found it, what would C&R have had to confront?
Thanks.

Never Let Me Go
I haven't read this in a while, so take this with a grain of salt, but Hailsham students were promised the possibility of deferrals, weren't they? So finding Ruth's possible is a casual activity for her because she has the ability to avoid her fate, but C&R don't have much time left so possibles are kind of scary.
I thought that the deferrals were a myth that evolved within the student body to cope with their fate and trying to "prove" their love seemed in some ways like Katniss trying to prove her love for Peeta to President Snow. It really didn't matter.
As for the finding of Ruth's "possible", what did it matter if she found the source of her genetic material? It was just another diversion. The Hailsham children were doomed from their conception in the petri dish or wherever it happened.
Science created these individuals for the sole purpose of harvesting their organs and kept them just happy enough to not try and destroy themselves before their purpose was fulfilled. If society recognized the individuality of the clones they would have to recognize their humanity and that would undermine the entire program.

Edward Costelloe
So the deferrals and possibles were just a coping mechanism for the Hailsham clones to deal with their separation from society
