Edward Costelloe Thanks for the reply. They were not promised a deferral, in fact the possibility was just a rumour without basis, but you mean Ruth could have deferred for a while and taken an office job, whereas C&R didn't have this possibility and even if were true then they would have had to face the differences between the two sets of students?

Dramapuppy Yes, if the characters believed in deferrals at the time this happened. Alternatively, they might have been jealous that Ruth's possible could have been upper-class, but it makes more sense to me that seeing a possible would remind C&R they do not have the false hope of a Hailsham student.

Stephanie I know I may be completely off track here but to me it sounded like C&R were somehow relieved not to even have the chance of hope. Not to have the possibility to chase for a way out, a hope that most likely would turn out to be false and would hurt even more not coming true. To have their path lined out before them so they could square up and face what was coming without looking right or left at things they could never hope to have. At least that is how I understood it.

Edward Costelloe Ah I see, so you think that the more limited possibilities and knowing how their lives were determined meant that they didn't have to confront other possibilities and even (potentially) false hopes. I think you are right, thanks.
