DK sure loves the carnival setting. I can name at least three of his books that feature this setting.
Vassago is a sick, demented person. He could rank up there as one of DK's worst villains.
As I have stated I love the ending and that is because of the spiritual aspect. With this reread I am noticing the little snippets of the spiritual aspect throughout the entire novel.

Hideaway's setting is an abandoned Amusement Park which I find different from a Carnival setting. I can recall Odd Thomas partially set in a Carnival, Twilight Eyes, The Funhouse all set in Carnivals.
Any others?

I knew I had seen the movie and had hated it and had not read the book yet at the time.

On the thought of Funhouses and Amusement Parks, Life Expectancy also has a Circus setting featuring Clowns and Aerialists.
I was reading Hideaway and the descriptions of the rain were so vivid that I felt the rain and smelled rain, then I looked out the window and realized it was raining. In the Dean Koontz Universe there are no coincidences.

In the small towns I grew up in , I didn't have any Amusement Parks nearby. Only once a year County Fair Rides. I live in Colorful Colorado now and there are two vintage Amusement Parks still in operation. I love the wooden roller coasters - even if while riding you wonder if they will collapse . I don't ride most amusement park rides anymore because I get extreme motion sickness and that's just not very fun :-)

I believe a person's favorite Dean Koontz Book says much about that individual :-)

Novels such as Hideaway, increase my appreciation storytellers. I believe a great novel not only entertains but gives wisdom.

I hope that this being my favorite says good things about me:)

I love her character. Koontz has had some memorable characters that have been children with hardships and Regina deserves to be at top of that list.
I started reading this just a couple of days ago and hate doing everyday things (like go to work, etc.) and having to put the book down. I'm nearly finished. I owned it years ago after seeing the film but never read it. Then I found a copy at a library book sale a month ago and decided to get it ($0.50). I can't say for sure, but something tells me I can appreciate it more now, in my mid-thirties, than I would have as a teenager.
The pacing of this story is fantastic. While the unfolding of this story is slow, it's so engrossing. The detail to which Koontz develops the characters, the tension, the sinister atmosphere...it's so difficult to pull away.
I've avoided reading the spoilers in this thread. I'm planning to finish it by tomorrow.

Yes. I think reading Hideaway in your thirties is an excellent time to appreciate the themes of this particular novel :-) I speak from experience. This is my 3rd time reading Hideaway - at the time of my first reading I was 27.
This turned out to be so much more than I expected. This is one I have definitely shelved as a keeper, hoping to re-read it some day. I will definitely recommend it should anyone ask where to start with Koontz. I was thoroughly entertained and have to say it is one of my top favorites of his.
Most Excellent to hear Liz :-) Hope you'll keep reading with us when a particular book sounds interesting. We are reading Fear Nothing & Seize the Night during the next two months.
In the Dean Koontz Universe, there are no coincidences - and that is the universe within which I reside. Just last night I was re-watching The X-Files Season One with an episode called Lazarus. There were some interesting parallels between that episode and Hideaway. Both stories dealt with people coming back to life after being clinically dead and the connections between people's minds. The big difference was (view spoiler)
I am also interested in watching this new film Flatliners which is coming to theaters soon. It seems this is a re-make, like many films. Most films I find are now remakes, sequels, or based on books/comics.

I actually read that it is a continuation from the original but takes place so many years later. I could be wrong as I read it off the internet and we all know how reliable that is.

I saw a preview for this last week when I went to see The Dark Tower. I'm intrigued because of the cast (Ellen Page!) but also fearful as I remember being terrified of the original when I watched it so many years ago. There are so many re-makes these days, it seems.
It's interesting how Hideaway has sparked my interest in reading non-fiction accounts of near-death experiences or people who have come back from the dead. Bringing something "evil" back is such a common theme, but I thought Koontz did it here with such an emphasis on character and a slow-building suspense with an excellent twist!

Religion plays a significant role in Hideaway. Everything from Regina's conversations with God to the Doctor's art collection to the ending.

Jim wrote: "I just watched the movie. Wow. That was bad. I can see why DK wanted his name off that. How do they turn a tremendous book into that?"
I've never watched it. I don't think it's worth searching out :-)

Wow! What a first introduction to Dean Koontz :-) Hideaway is an excellent novel, but not a typical first book to read for Koontz fans. Congratulations! Which Dean Koontz book will you choose next?

If you'd like to visit an abandoned amusement park or have a near death experience, then find a copy of the book within the next month. This is gonna be fun! :-)
