I liked this one a lot too, although it was one of Scott's later novels - and as his mind was starting to "go," there are plot holes and some parts that are overly implausible.I don't have time to reread it :-( I suppose the soldier is introduced here in these pages; he was an interesting character. I liked the physical description of him and the city. This book has some great characters, including the women.

Yes Hereward is introduced as is the Royal family; Alexius, Irene and their daughter Anna Comnena.
There seems to be a lot of history explained in these chapters, but not a lot happens other than meeting the characters. Hereward is sympathetic character, surrounded as he is by the fawning subjects of the emperor.
