Nemo (nemoslibrary) | 1505 comments We've read/skimmed the first half (4 volumes) of the Ante-Nicene Fathers series in the first half of 2017. The Apostolic Fathers, Fathers of the Second Century, and of the Third Century, Tertullian and Origen. Although the number of active participants in discussions are few, I hope those who participated have enjoyed and benefited from the readings. I certainly have enjoyed all the readings so far.

Now is the time to make recommendations for our next group read. I think it is time to switch gears and read something that most members are interested in discussing. After all, that is what a GR group is for.

Nemo (nemoslibrary) | 1505 comments I'd recommend Origen's treatise On Prayer. It is not included in the ANF series, but is available for free on line. Origen is an engaging and fascinating writer, and I expect to learn more from him about prayer.

Ruth I have not contributed lately, since I have had a lot on my mind, but I did skim through the conversations and enjoyed the lively discussions and ideas that were brought up.
It is my impression from that, that Origen is indeed a good choice for reading.
I like the idea of a book on prayer. And perhaps it is also an idea to see what other church fathers say on this topic.

Kerstin | 317 comments That's a great idea! I've read at least parts of Origen's 'On Prayer' before, but it has been a long time.

As for the ANF series, I don't think I will fully catch up anytime soon. I have too many days when I simply don't get to it.

AJ I'm still trailing behind, but since we've read the Presbyterian translation of the Fathers, how about:

A Library of Fathers of the Holy Catholic Church, Anterior to the Division of the East and West

That is a 48-volume series. Most, if not all, of it overlap with the series we're reading now. http://www.tertullian.org/fathers/lfc...

Is there a particular book you'd like to recommend?

Tertulian also wrote a treatise on prayer. If you know of other Fathers' writings, let me know. We could have a topic discussion on Prayer, as opposed to a book discussion.

I don't know I'm interested in Basil, but I was just wondering about why they were considered "too Catholic" and I assume it has to do with saints and rites.
