SOLVED. Trying to remember the Title of an autobiography about an older man who quits his job (teaching?) and roams the country (US) staying at various places. [s]

I read the book in the early 90's and I think the older gentleman may have been an American Indian.

(At one point I think he is allowed to stay at a small college but the janitor doesn't tell anyone and they throw him out when they discover him in the dorm.)

Any help would be appreciated, thanks.
