What's with all the slang?

The oldest Gladers have only been living there for two years, so I can see no reason why their language has changed. The only thing I can presume is that the original Gladers spoke that language before they arrived....

Since the Gladers arrived with no memory of their former lives, they were essentially clean slates. I could see how they would make up words for things to adapt. Or perhaps the words were planted in their minds by those who put them in the maze.

Yeah, it doesn't make a lot of sense. It's cool. Maybe gimmicky. Definitely gives the author a way to swear. I guess they have been isolated so it sort of makes sense... there are a lot of things wrong with this series once you think about it.

The slang drove me nuts! I had to DNF this because it was just too hard for me to get into.

I was really confused with it especially when they used it to describe multiple things but I kind of liked it. It's better than saying a bunch of real curse words on like every page.

I thought the slang was a good fun creative idea instead of actually putting curse words.

I think it was really smart of Dashner to invent the slang. When you think about it they're teenagers and they've been stuck in the middle of nowhere for quite a while without any parental figures so you can except them to be swearing a lot. The slang was a way to avoid having bad words all over the book.

I felt like they invented their own slang because so many of their memories were taken that they didn't have words for certain things. Wasn't there a few times in the book where Thomas would observe something, but couldn't quite find the word for it? (I thought I remembered something about the sky changing/looking dark, cloudy but he couldn't find words for it?- it's been a long time since I read the books so I don't remember exactly) maybe I'm not remembering correctly! I just felt that they were all alone and secluded and confused and their slang provided a comfort or some consistency. Maybe I was thinking too much about it!

I thought it was creative, but don't make it the main focus of the book. There was so much more to it. Slang was just a tiny part of the culture.

I think the slang was but there because they're all teenage boys. When you put a bunch of boys together, unsupervised, it's instinct for them to create boyish nicknames like "klunk" or "greenie".

I think the point of the slang was to convey that although the boys do not remember where they came from, there is a common element that unites them, and the slang is something they developed together that outsiders would not understand. It shows that a community can be forged by people in similar circumstances as each other, as different as they may be.

The slang bothered me. I felt like the only purpose of it was so that the characters could "cuss" without actually having bad language in the book.

I thought the slang seemed pointless and kind of annoying. Although it didn't drive me crazy.
