SOLVED. Contemporary Book with Specific Quote ("...Pretty Words for Ugly Things." [s]

Hi. I am looking for a book I read sometime between the late 1990s and mid-ish 2000s. It is contemporary fiction. The book has a specific quote that I love that is something along the lines of: "I'm tired of pretty words for ugly things" or "She was tired of pretty words for ugly things." I do not recall if it is a collection of short stories or if it is a novel. Also, I think part of the story might be set in Texas.

Looking forward to having this mystery solved. Google has not been helpful in the search.

There's a collection of stories in one book by Jean Thompson called Who Do You Love: Stories. A quote from the first short story goes:

"But that was a long time ago, in the good part of the bad old days, and Annie's through with pretty words for ugly things. She doesn't want anything in her life that has to be tricked out in poetry, explained away."
