Emerald Green
question
Questions (Dr. White, plot holes, etc..)?

Okay, so I finished all three books and I still have some questions. Kindly answer them if you caught something I didn't when reading the novel(s).
(1) Why did Dr. White suddenly decide to help Gwyneth when she was "sick" (pretending to be sick)?
(2) (This one's all the way back from Ruby Red) Why did Gwyneth ask Robert if he wanted to tell his dad (Dr. White) anything but didn't bother telling him anyway?
(3) How in the world did the 2nd chronograph end up with Lucas? Did Paul & Lucy just give it to one of his ancestors or to him directly sometime in the past..? Otherwise, why/how would they be stuck in the past..?
(4) (Not exactly a question but) I don't see how Gwen's ability to see ghosts/demons helped her out in aside from Xemerius being able to go through tangible things (which any ghost could have done). She also could have learned how to act like a "lady" from other sources (James wasn't really needed). Does this mean that her ability to see ghosts just makes her a weirdo..?
So many plot holes and I'm just left here wanting more info. :/

1. Dr. White was starting to suspect Mr. Whitman and I believe that led him to help Gwyneth so that he could have more time to figure out Mr. Whitman's plan (although I don't think he knew who Mr. Whitman really was).
2.I don't think she wanted to tell him that she sees ghosts and has a message from his dead son. Besides he basically got the message (even Robert seemed to think so) based on his conversation with her in the midst of her conversation with Robert.
3.Paul and Lucy did get the 2nd chronograph to Lucas probably in a similar way that Lady Tilny got Gwyneth's message to him.
4.I see her ability as a sign toward her immortality and as the magic of the raven the count was looking for showing that she was special.
I hope this is helpful for you.

(1) Hard to say exactly, but I always felt that it was because Dr. White in his own grumpy way did care for Gwen.
(2) I guess she intended to, but, well, didn't.
(3) The Chronograph can't be taken out of it's time, or else you're stuck in which ever time you did take it with you. As I read it they traveled into the past with it and then hid it with / gave it to Lucas at some point.
(4) It didn't exactly, it added just a quirk to the story and an incentive for Gwen to change the past (which shouldn't actually have been possible I think, but anyways...).

Really the only one I feel I have a decent answer to is number 3.
Lucy and Paul did in fact give the Chronograph to Lucas at some point in the past. The reason they are still stuck in the past even though the same Chronograph exist in the future is because one cannot travel ahead in time. Just as Gwen cannot travel ahead, Lucy and Paul cannot travel further ahead than the time the landed in when the stole the chronograph. When they took the Chronograph, that time became their present, and one cannot travel into the future.
4) I don't think it ever really helped her at all, but isn't that ability described in the prophecy as being an ability of the ruby? Maybe it could have helped her if the situation had played out differently. Or maybe that contributes to her immortality or something.

I'm confused about one thing, Gideon really didn't die at the end right however why is Gwen all sad in the last few pages about the fact the "he's not here."
I still don't see how Lucas ended up with the chronograph. He can't travel to the past, because he's not a gene carrier (the time travelling gene came into the Montrose family when Lady Arista married him). And Lucy and Paul can't travel to the future, because the chronograph itself prevents this very thing. That means the couple are in 1912 and can not move beyond that year (was Lucas even born yet so they could talk?). So... how or when on earth did they meet so the device could change hands? Not in the past, considering Gwyneth visited his grandpa many times (on her last visit, he was already a grown up man and married to Lady Arista) and he still didn't have the chronograph or he would have told this to his granddaughter. Maybe they used a go-between? Really confusing.
Regarding the raven's magic question, I think it's immortality. The ability to see ghosts is just a by-product of it.

They gave it to him when he was young and they were old. When she went to visit him when he was married to Arista they knew all about the Chronograph

Maybe the chronograph was passed on down the generations through Mr. and Mrs. Paul/Lucy Benard's descendants until given to Lucas? Maybe through the present day butler, Mr. Bernard who would in fact be a brother or uncle to Gwyneth?
I also wonder if some stuff was lost in translation from German to English? Perhaps Gwyneth did pass on little Roberts message to Mr. White and that is why he helped her. Does anyone know if these things are more clear in the English version?

Based on the evidence the chronograph was passed down from generation to generation mr.bernard so he gave it to He became the butler only to get the chronograph to Gwyneth
Also I my sister read the German version so I will ask her if the part about dr.White lying to the other guardians make more sense

See I understand most all this except for the point that if Gwyneth and Gideon prevented James(the ghost at school) from dying of small poxs wouldn't that have caused a paradox. Bc by saving him in the past Gwen never met him in the future meaning he never taught her anything and they never became friends and she didn't know he ever existed. By her never knowing he existed she wouldn't have gone back to save him meaning he would have died of small poxs and then winded up being a ghost and it would all just go round and round.
Honestly I love the books and the story line but when writing of time travel one has to be so meticulous about how they write certain events.
