Imagine a world with Villains trying to destroy the world, and certain people that can posses magic. This book is called Skulduggery pleasant playing with fire by Derek Landy, Derek Landy was born 23rd of October 1974 in Lusk, Ireland and he also used to teach Kenpo Karate before becoming a full time writer. This book is the 2nd book out of the 9 book series but their are an extra seven add ons making 16 books that are apart of the skulduggery Pleasant series in which it is best off to start at the beginning. This book would fall under a fantasy fiction with a bit horror and mystery and it is mainly set in Ireland as that is where the Authors from.

The book Skulduggery Pleasant playing with fire is about a girl called Valkyrie Cain that can access special abilities to defeat enemies and save the world, she has a mentor called skulduggery who is a detective and can also access special abilities. Valkyrie is a teenage school girl that ditches school to work with skulduggery who is a skeleton wearing a black suit and hat and who's job it is to teach Valkyrie and help save the world.
The book starts off with Valkyrie and Skulduggery catching a villain and later find out that one of the most deadliest villains, vengeous is freed. This villains aims to find an ancient monster called the Grotesquery that has the ability to free a group of people that are able to destroy the world. This monster that skulduggery and Valkyrie have to destroy is unbeatable, it grows stronger and can heal itself but Vengeous needs certain things to revive it.

Some of the Characters are Valkyrie Cain, Skulduggery Pleasant, Baron Vengeous, The Grotesquery, Vaurine scapegrace, Billy-Ray Sanguine, Dusk, The torment and more. My favourite character would have to be Skulduggery because he is such a cool guy and a really great mentor as well as friend.

The main theme for this book is teamwork and the fact that they need an army or powerful team to defeat this unbeatable monster and the evil villain and his army. Another theme that is shown through this book is courage as Valkyrie Cain is not afraid to fight this monster especially how it is linked very closely with her and Justice in that they are fighting for their world and for their family and friends. I thought it was well written and very descriptive when it comes to describing a character or event such as a death. This book seemed well thought out as it links all together with sub stories inside the one book and upcoming novels. This is for people that like a bit of fiction and adventure and it is probably aimed for teenagers at around 12 to 16.
