Unable to find or name a book I read in High school. It may have been written during the late seventies or the 80's. It is about a teenager that builds three to four creature models. They may or may not be animatronic and come alive and try to kill him. I believe at some point during the early portion he goes to a concert with a girl. It may have been Tangerine Dream. The author may have been a teen as well. I remember it winning an award for young adult fiction. It definitely has the Gremlins vibe to it, each creature has it's own distinctive name.

I also remember it won a book award, however I am unsure which one. I think the title is also one word but I could be wrong.
I may be looking for the same book. Some of the details seem the same, and it's quite possible that I'm remembering details wrong. This is my thread, perhaps some of the details are similar to your memory?

Shanna, after reading your thread I decided to try another search. I actually found it this time! The name of the book is Dragon Fall by Lee J Hindle. Maybe this is your book as well?
