Jonathan Richter (jsrichter) | 1 comments Hi All!

I really hope you are all doing well in these (unpredictable) times. My name is Jonathan and I am a philosophy and political science dual major at Quinnipiac University. I am in my senior year and unfortunately we were all sent home due to COVID-19.

So, alas, here I end up! This upcoming fall, I will be joining the University of Faculty as a Graduate Assistant (and graduate student) in the Department of Public Policy.

Mark (timeandchoice) | 2 comments Hi Alan and All,

I'm a designer with a BFA in Visual Art from the University of British Columbia. I've always been fascinated with philosophy starting in high school, running through university, and now as part of a philosophy group that meets physically in Hobart, Tasmania. I used to discuss political philosophy for twenty years with my mentor who passed away a couple of years ago. I'm looking to broaden my exposure to a philosophical community in the digital space.

Ev (bbyeejay) Hello all. You may call me Ev. I am a college student looking to study psychology, medicine, and hospital management with the eventual aim of becoming a psychiatrist. Naturally, those subjects interplay greatly in philosophy and I consider the holistic interaction of body, mind, and spirit to be key to understanding the oddities of human existence. I am excited to engage in discussions here and hopefully find myself both challenged and respected.

Bruce Nappi (bruce_nappi) | 1 comments Hello all. After over 30+ years of private research on what I saw as the collapse of communication in society, I pulled together my notes and started to publish a book series to record my discoveries. Both published volumes, I believe, will be interesting to this group. I hope comments from the group can pick up where I left off. I welcome them.

The first is Collapse 2020 Vol. 1: Fall of the First Global Civilization. The key discoveries in the book relevant to philosophy and ethics are: 1. a new theory of human consciousness; 2 a new, fully secular description of the concept referred to as the “Seven Deadly Sins”; and 3 a new theory of how human’s learn language, which leads to an explanation for the breakdown of discussion in democratic groups: grid-lock and polarization, for example.

The second is Collapse 2020 Vol. 2: Birth of Personalized Democracy. This new form of “democracy” does not have an Athenian structure. It doesn’t have “voting”, and therefore does not lead to a “tyranny of the majority”. While I’ve spent years refining the current structure, I acknowledge up front, it is an “unbaked” loaf. I welcome support to bring it to life.

Contact me through this group or at A3Society.org/contact .

Bruce, I see volume 1 on Amazon, but I don't see volume 2 there or anyplace else. Is volume 2 available? If so, where?

I don't have time in the near future to read your books, but I might be interested in doing so at some point. I have put volume 1 on my "to read" list.

Elena Petrov | 4 comments Hello all.
My name is Lena Redman.
My mother tongue is Russian, so I make some silly mistakes (especially in the use of articles 'the' and 'a'). You're very welcome to laugh at my faults as long as you explain them to me so we can laugh together. Next time I won't do them but we can laugh at something else.
Anyway, I'm very excited to join the group. I've been living in the West, namely, in Australia for many years but never managed to lose that sense of being a pathetic foreigner. Every time I open my mouth or write a line, people immediately recognize my shortcomings.
One thing, however, made me feel more confident was my PhD study. Although it was in education, it somehow took a very political turn. I sort of began to understand that being born last century and coming from an alternative universe was not a complete loss of personal identity but rather had the potential of recovering something that I knew experientially that other people might not know.
For example, running away from socialism as far as it was only possible and now finding socialism flooding inside the free world, made me feel responsible to write a book, that I just have published 'I Really Do Care; Shouldn't We All? From Sputnik to Trump and Socialism.' I argue that by developing a post-Sputnik paranoia and declaring Soviet education as superior (which was nowhere near reality), the West began its rigorous educational reforms focusing on science and technology and undermining the humanities. This resulted in the production of IQ winners, on one hand, and people who cared much less about others, historical or scientific facts, in the other. In other words, I-Do-Not-Care-culture. IDC culture then became fertile soil for the growing neo-liberalism, Trumpism and reactionary socialism.
As much as I would like to participate in this group's discussions, I am, of course, very eager for people to read my book and say something about it on Amazon. If I have to provide its free copy here, I would be very happy to do this. Please, advise me on this.
Looking forward to new discussions.
Lena

Welcome to this group, Lena, and thank you for your interesting post.

You can become a member of the Goodreads Author Group by creating a Goodreads author page and, if you wish to do so, using Goodreads methods for promotion. Click here for details. This is how you can do specific advertising, including book giveaways and other such procedures.

Although the present group permits reference to an author’s book in relevant topics, this is not the place for book sales or giveaways. This group’s policies regarding authors are set forth in post 7 of our Rules and Housekeeping topic. Please review all the rules in that topic, if you haven’t already done so.

It is always difficult to learn and use a language that is not one’s native language. But your post shows that you have done well in learning and using English.

I wish you the all the best in your present and future endeavors.

Walter Horn Hi, I'm an old philosopher (Ph.D Brown, 1978) who has written a book on democracy that's coming out on Lexington Books this fall. I have a couple of prior self-published books, and a number of published papers in philosophy and public policy, but this is my first book to be picked up by an academic publisher. There's a bit more about me here, amazon.com/author/walter.horn11 The book is nastily expensive--but (ever the optimist) I'm hoping it will find at least a couple of reviewers here at goodreads anyhow.

I mention a bunch of my favorite authors of writings on democracy in the profile at the blog linked at the amazon author page above. I'm looking forward to any advice on getting my book read in addition to discussing issues regarding political philosophy here. Thanks for setting up this group!

Welcome, Walter, to this group. You and I are about the same age (I may be a bit older). Your background, interests, and publications indicate that you have several interests within the scope of this group. Please be sure to read the “Rules and Housekeeping” topic. I founded this group in 2014 and occasionally have to enforce the rules, especially when people get far into fields other than political philosophy and ethics. There are a couple of exceptions to the relevancy rules, which are explained in the above-linked topic.

Rich | 1 comments Hi Everyone,

My name is Rich. My education was in the sciences and have been working as a Chemist in various capacities and industries since the late 1980's. Reading has been a passion for me for most of my life and in particular history pretty much since I learned to read. Philosophy is a much more recent interest and political philosophy more recent than that. My present interest is to make sense of the confusion of the past four - five years. My personal objective is to understand the origins of how we got where we are at this moment in time.

I came upon this group when I read Eric's review of One Nation Under God, How Corporate America Invented Christian America and his invitation to one of the folks that commented on his review. Eric included a list of books that he recommended for further reading on the subject (which lead to more reading for me) I consider joining this group to be a source of learning. Much of the posts that I have reviewed are very articulate and communicate a command of this subject that is much more informed than mine so I know that I will have to pick up a lot of material and welcome this challenge.

I am presently slogging through Karl Popper's The Open Society and its Enemies. I have coming to me in the near future anthologies of Edmund Burke and J.S. Mill. I have read the Federalist Papers and the Debates of the Constitution before and would not be hurt by a reread in the near future. I would welcome any recommendations that anyone can give me to further my education.

Welcome, Cheyanne, to this group! Yes, The Republic is a great work on many levels. I've read and reread it, in whole and in part, for several decades, and I always learn something new when reading it. Here's a clue to understanding the dialogue: Plato probably intended it not as a utopian scheme to be but into practice but rather as a delineation of the nature and limits of political life. For further assistance in understanding this and other of Plato’s dialogues, see the topics Plato and Leo Strauss (1899-1973) and the “Straussians” in this group. See also my 1971 Master’s essay, “The Teaching of Plato’s Seventh Letter”.

Nice to virtually meet you all. My name is Amanda. My degree is in Chemical and Biomedical Engineering, but I have always enjoyed reading, especially about philosophy and rhetoric. My minor in college was in science philosophy/policy which allowed me to dip my toes in a little deeper, but now that I’m working in the sciences I’ve been missing reading and discussing philosophical texts. Welcome to this group, Amanda. My apologies for not responding earlier; I've been tied up the last 24 hours.

We do have a topic (thread) on Hanna Arendt: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/.... You are welcome to contribute to it. I myself read some of Arendt's work decades ago, but I no longer recall much of what I read, and I am focused on other writings right now. We currently have more than 3,700 people in this Goodreads group. It is probable that others might be interested in interacting with you in the Hannah Arendt topic, so perhaps you could get the ball rolling with a post or two at that location.

(Note: Randal Samstag, an earlier contributor in the Hannah Arendt topic, decided to withdraw from this Goodreads group some years ago, so he will not be responding to further posts in it.)

Welcome to this group, Bryan. The field of medieval Icelandic studies sounds very interesting. My wife (Mimi, in this group) and I have watched two or three Netflix or Amazon Prime series on the medieval Vikings and the world they encountered. Their settlement of Iceland was part of this story. Although much of these series was based on Viking legends, some of it appears to have been based on historical records. Indeed, the legends themselves may have some factual basis, even if exaggerated. And, of course, the details of the series were fictional.
