Is it this one Judy? Phiz! The Book Illustrations Of Hablot Knight Browne by John Buchanan-Brown? Peter and I both have copies :)
Judy,
I will have to go and try to search out that last book you mentioned, it sounds delightful. Peter should love it, he always notices things I never had a clue was there and I spend pretty much time looking at the things. :-)
Oh, and they don't always have commentaries, at least not on there, I'm surprised there are so many of them for this book.

Ooh, no, I haven't read that one, thanks Jean. The book I've got is [book:Phiz: The Man Who Drew Dickens, a biography by his great-great-grandaughter Valerie Browne Lester. I'm ashamed not to have read this yet, but years ago I did read Dickens and Phiz by Michael Steig - don't remember much about it now though!

I do have a copy of the Kitton published in 1899 in its reprinted version. You can get a copy on Amazon. I've done a Goodreads review on it."
Many thanks for this Peter, I definitely agree that we owe Kim a lot for all this great work on the illustrations and commentaries. I will go over now and read your review.
Unfortunately it seems as if the quality of the reproduction of 19th century illustrations in general has deteriorated over the years - I have often found that ancient hardbacks have wonderful clear illustrations which bear little relation to those in modern paperbacks, but I'm hoping digital technology will mean they can be restored to their former glory!
