The tl;dr is that if you use Calibre to organize your books, you no longer need a separate e-reader on your mobile device to read those books. The new, updated server has an HTML5 ereader interface that allows you to read your books and keeps track of where you are in the book.

If you're techie enough (as I know some of the S&L crowd is - based on their use of GR APIs to come up with stats at the end of the year) you can set it up to serve from your house to the outside net and have access to all your books whenever you have internet access.

I'm excited to try it after I upgrade to Calibre 3, but this could be a game changer for me and for anyone reading on a tablet or phone. (If you use an ereader, this wouldn't change your current work-flow. And I still prefer ereaders - especially for a long plane trip where I would run out of electricity on a mobile device - but my phone is always with me while my ereader is not)

Rick Hmm. I use Marvin so I don't care about this personally but I can see how it would be nice to share a family's books with everyone in the household without all the syncing headaches. I wonder about the wisdom of using this "wherever you have internet access" as that's basically sharing your books freely (or behind some authentication that invites hackers).

PS: Calibre docs on this here https://manual.calibre-ebook.com/serv...

Note that password protection is off by default.
